My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 220: Finally, a Breakthrough!
Chapter 220: Chapter 220: Finally, a Breakthrough!
Evan Keller stood beside Officer Lee, staring at the file and squeezing the words out through gritted teeth.
Perhaps she was overconfident, thinking the investigation would never lead back to her.
Murphy Lynch’s "kind-hearted" boss had been using this same WeChat account in the group chat from the very beginning.
She was even the group chat’s creator.
The chat history was quite interesting. All the messages were inquiries, asking if anyone had seen their child recently in various places.
Then they would provide the age, gender, and personality.
But there were never any photos or names.
It didn’t look like a group chat for finding missing children at all. It looked more like a marketplace.
They used this group chat to state their requirements, then waited for the "seller" to deliver the "goods" to their door.
"Have the department over there arrest her first, then go through the information on her phone!
There must be a lot more on it that we haven’t found!" Evan Keller made the call immediately, quickly contacting the other department.
The other department had been struggling with Murphy Lynch, who was stubbornly refusing to answer any questions.
After hearing what Evan Keller said, Captain Pierce, the officer in charge of the case, slammed his hand on the table and shot to his feet. He called over several squad members and told them to come with him to make the arrest.
’We have to move fast.’
’What if she senses something and makes a run for it!’
Soon, Captain Pierce and his squad arrived at the factory gate. Just as they were about to enter, they were stopped by an old man guarding the entrance.
"Hey, hey, hey, hold on! What do you think you’re doing?" The old man looked at the police uniforms on Captain Pierce and the others, feeling wary.
’Don’t tell me someone reported the factory again!’
’No, that can’t happen!’
While asking, the old man subtly slid a hand into his pocket, intending to warn the people inside.
But before he could get his hand all the way in, a young officer who had been watching him closely pinned his arm.
The officer yanked the old man’s hand out and swiftly pulled out whatever was in his pocket.
"OW, OW, OW! Don’t you people know how to respect your elders?! If you ruin my hand, I’ll make you pay for it!" the old man shouted as he tried to pull his hand back.
’He was frantic. ’They came in swinging. Someone must have reported the factory!’’
’No!’
’I have to warn everyone inside!’
At that thought, the old man saw someone walking out of the factory and immediately screamed at the top of his lungs, "Assault! Assault! The police are beating someone up!"
The figure who had been walking out instantly stopped, then turned and ran frantically back inside.
At the same time, Captain Pierce and his men could faintly hear them shouting that someone was causing trouble outside.
"Sir, we’re here looking for someone, not to investigate your factory," Captain Pierce sighed, seizing the opportunity to explain to the still-struggling old man.
Their department was well aware of the situation at this factory.
Although the boss was crooked and frequently docked workers’ wages,
he at least had some principles, knowing better than to completely alienate the local residents.
For the locals who came to work, he would symbolically deduct a hundred or two each month. But for the minors who had been dumped there by their parents, he was ruthless, docking several hundred for the smallest mistake.
For the local seniors, it was a job they could do without traveling far. It not only let them look after their homes, but the income was decent and helped ease the burden on their children.
They knew it was a sweatshop, but they didn’t care, as long as their own interests weren’t harmed.
As long as the factory didn’t go under, they would still have a job.
Over time, some local seniors who didn’t even work there started loitering around the factory. They would stop any stranger they saw, terrified someone might be there to report it and destroy their source of income.
This was why Captain Pierce and his men had been turning a blind eye.
They had already been trying to figure out how to extract the minors who had been abandoned there by their parents. They just hadn’t found a viable solution before this whole mess started.
After hearing the explanation, the still-struggling old man awkwardly stopped resisting. He looked at Captain Pierce and asked, "You’re looking for someone? Not here to shut down the factory?"
"No. What could we possibly shut down with just a few of us?" Captain Pierce’s voice was tinged with resignation.
Realizing he’d made a fool of himself, the old man straightened up sheepishly. "Well, why didn’t you say so in the first place? Good grief, you made me cause a scene. Who are you looking for?"
’It’s not like you gave us a chance to speak!’
Captain Pierce was too exasperated to retort. Remembering the reason for his visit, he said, "There’s a girl named Murphy Lynch who works at this factory, right? We’re looking for her supervisor. We need to ask her a few things about Murphy Lynch."
The words had barely left his mouth when a crowd of people ran out from the factory, each clutching a broom or some other makeshift weapon.
"See her? The one in the middle. That’s Lynn’s supervisor, May Lynch." Now certain that Captain Pierce wasn’t there to shut down the factory, the old man relaxed and pointed out their target.
May Lynch, dressed in a work uniform, clutched a wooden stick and eyed Captain Pierce and his officers warily.
’Her mind was racing. ’What’s happening? Why are the police here? Don’t tell me... have the things I’ve done been exposed?’’
’No, impossible. Absolutely not.’
May Lynch tried to reassure herself.
The next moment, she saw Captain Pierce walk toward her with a grim expression. He showed her his badge and said, "May Lynch? Come with us. We need you to come down to the station to assist with an investigation."
Immediately, the officers who had come with Captain Pierce jogged over to flank May Lynch, cutting off any chance of escape.
May Lynch’s face went white. ’It’s over. They really found me out.’
After Captain Pierce left with the woman, the crowd holding sticks and brooms looked at each other in confusion. ’That’s it? They’re just leaving?’
’So it has nothing to do with us?’
They all looked at one another.
Finally, they lowered their makeshift weapons and went back to work.
"Hey, where’s Lynn? I don’t think I’ve seen her for a while?"
"I don’t know. Maybe she had something to do and took the day off. Whatever, let’s get back to work."
Meanwhile, after Captain Pierce brought May Lynch back to the station, he took her phone.
The color drained from May Lynch’s face as she watched them take her phone.
’It’s over. It’s really over this time.’
Soon, they found something suspicious on it.
May Lynch’s phone also had that same app. Inside it was a private chat room with a name identical to the one on WeChat.
’This must be where they were really exchanging information.’
"Captain, she has a hidden folder here. It’s full of videos!" a colleague from the tech department called out, having quickly found the anomaly.
He called Captain Pierce over and played one of the videos.
As the video played, the deep frown on Captain Pierce’s face gradually smoothed out.
"Finally, we’ve got them!"
