Chapter 204: Chapter 204: We’ve Already Broken Up

A hint of excitement crept into Zoe Sawyer’s voice. Her theory had just been confirmed!

The reason she couldn’t enter the scene was that this time, she was seeing something that would happen in the future!

The door had given her a clue but wouldn’t allow her to interfere.

’So that’s what it meant!’

No wonder she’d felt the sky seen through the gap in the curtains looked a bit dim. It wasn’t her imagination—it was real!

"What did you figure out?" Heath Hale asked, looking at Zoe Sawyer’s expression. He remembered why they had come, then glanced over at Yvette Yates, who was still standing there, completely unharmed.

Suddenly, as if a realization dawned on him, his eyes widened.

"Don’t tell me... you’re saying the murder hasn’t happened yet? That what you saw is something that’s *about* to happen?

So, *this* is the real power of your ability’s upgrade?" Heath Hale’s tone was filled with disbelief, but mindful of their surroundings, he instinctively lowered his voice.

Evan Keller and the others also understood the key implication. Their breath hitched, followed by a wave of elation.

The murder hadn’t happened yet. That meant they still had a chance to stop it!

They could save a family that was about to be shattered by the loss of a child!

For Evan Keller and his team, this was simply the best news imaginable.

"This is great!"

Evan Keller and the others excitedly clenched their fists. Although they remembered to keep their voices down, the combined volume of several people was still somewhat noticeable on the ground floor.

The commotion attracted Yvette Yates’s attention. She looked over curiously, but when she saw Zoe Sawyer and the others in their police uniforms, she jumped in fright.

’So many police officers... did something happen in our building?’

Yvette Yates glanced over again and again. Finally, unable to contain her curiosity, she took a few steps closer and asked apprehensively, "Officers, with so many of you here, is there a problem in our building?"

A few residents passing by also stopped in their tracks, looking over with curiosity.

They were also quite curious, wondering if something had really happened.

Zoe Sawyer had just been wondering how to approach Yvette Yates without arousing suspicion. Now that the woman had come to them, there was no way she would let the opportunity pass.

"We’re here to promote anti-fraud awareness. With the New Year approaching, a lot of scammers are trying to hit their quotas.

All sorts of new scams are popping up. To strengthen residents’ anti-fraud awareness, we’re here to get a feel for the situation so we can plan our work better," Zoe Sawyer said with a smile, flashing her badge at Yvette Yates.

At the same time, her eyes subtly scanned Yvette Yates from head to toe. On the surface, nothing seemed amiss. Her expression was calm; it appeared she hadn’t been attacked or abused yet.

’Then how does the killer catch her?’

’And what about that line, "I’ve done my homework for this moment"?’

’It means the killer has been targeting Yvette Yates from the very beginning.’

’Our goal here can’t be just to stop this attack. We need to protect Yvette Yates and catch the perpetrator.’

’That’s the only way to solve the problem for good and ensure Yvette Yates is truly safe.’

With this in mind, the words flowed naturally from Zoe Sawyer’s mouth: "There’s another important reason. We’re also randomly selecting a resident’s home to perform a safety check and see if there are any security risks.

Then we collect some data to help us better carry out our work in the future. Ma’am, would it be possible for us to conduct a safety inspection at your home?"

’First things first, I need to talk Yvette Yates into agreeing.’

’It’s also a chance to check her apartment and see if anyone is hiding inside.’

’First, we need to determine if the person is already hiding in her home, or if they’ll enter from the outside.’

Yvette Yates hesitated, but after seeing the uniforms on Zoe Sawyer and the others, her last bit of reluctance vanished.

"No problem. Please, follow me."

Yvette Yates agreed without another thought. Just then, an elevator arrived on the ground floor.

The group got into the elevator and went straight to Yvette Yates’s apartment.

After stepping into the living room of Yvette Yates’s apartment, Zoe Sawyer discreetly scanned the entire room, her gaze finally settling on the sofa.

’That’s the primary crime scene.’

Yvette Yates walked over, pulled the drawn curtains open a crack, and then brought a few glasses of water to Zoe Sawyer and the others. "What should I do?"

"Don’t worry, Ms. Yates. We’re professionals at this. Just leave it to us," Zoe Sawyer said reassuringly. While speaking, she took out her phone and pulled up an anti-fraud quiz that Officer Lee had sent over in a hurry. "We’ll tackle this from two angles. You can work on this anti-fraud quiz while we give your home a thorough inspection."

Although Yvette Yates found it a bit strange, she trusted the police, so she took the phone and started on the quiz.

Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale sat on either side of her. While pretending to watch her take the quiz, they kept an eye on Evan Keller and the others, feeling a little tense inside.

Yvette Yates’s apartment was very tidy. There wasn’t much furniture in the living room, and at a glance, there were no obvious hiding places.

’I wonder about the kitchen and other rooms, though.’

"Do you live alone, Ms. Yates? If you do, you need to be extra careful about your safety," Zoe Sawyer remarked. She had noticed there was only one pair of slippers by the door; they had all put on shoe covers upon entering.

"Um... yes." As she said this, Yvette Yates’s expression grew awkward. Her eyes kept darting unconsciously toward her bedroom, as if something was hidden inside.

Seeing Yvette Yates’s expression, alarm bells went off in Zoe Sawyer’s head.

’Don’t tell me someone’s hiding in there?’

A thought suddenly struck Zoe Sawyer. ’Could it be that the killer has an unusual relationship with Yvette Yates?’

"Ms. Yates, we’ve finished checking the other areas. We also went ahead and fixed a few minor issues in the kitchen and bathroom. All that’s left is the bedroom. Would it be convenient for us to take a look?" Evan Keller asked, standing in the middle of the living room and looking expectantly at Yvette Yates.

Yvette Yates stood up hesitantly. She walked over to Evan Keller and was just about to refuse when the bedroom door was suddenly thrown open from the inside.

A man wearing only a bath towel walked out, his tone dripping with annoyance. "Yvette Yates, what the hell are you doing? Why did you bring so many people back with you? You know I don’t like it, don’t you?"

Hearing the man’s voice, Zoe Sawyer froze and tugged on Heath Hale’s sleeve.

When he looked over, Zoe Sawyer whispered, "That’s the killer’s voice!"

’I’m absolutely sure of it. That’s his voice!’

’Looks like my theory was right. Yvette Yates and the killer are close!’

Yvette Yates, who had been hesitant just a moment ago, saw the man and her expression instantly turned cold and hard.

"What are you doing here? We already broke up! Stop harassing me!"
