My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 203: The Victim Isn’t Dead
Chapter 203: Chapter 203: The Victim Isn’t Dead
Helpless, Zoe Sawyer could only stare intently at the scene before her, committing every detail to memory while trying to see if she could pass through again.
But no matter what angle or how much force she used, she couldn’t get through.
"Those people almost ruined my fun. You didn’t actually think you’d be saved, did you? I’ve been planning this for a very long time," the killer said, his tone grim yet tinged with a hint of excitement.
He then raised the weapon high and stabbed viciously at his target.
Bright red liquid splattered onto his face and clothes, but he wiped it away nonchalantly with his sleeve.
Once the victim had taken their last breath, the killer pulled out the weapon, wiped it casually on the victim’s clothes a few times, and turned to leave.
As the killer left, Zoe was suddenly thrown back from the door.
Heath Hale reached out and steadied her. "What happened? Are you hurt?" he asked with concern.
"I’m fine. It’s just... strange. I clearly saw the crime scene, but I couldn’t get through this time," Zoe said as she steadied herself, staring at the door with a complex expression.
’Didn’t my ability get an upgrade?’
’Why can’t I get through now?’
"Don’t panic yet. Were there any landmarks or identifying features? Let’s go to the scene and check it out first," Heath said, gently soothing Zoe.
Right now, what’s more important is the victim’s location. The sooner we get there, the more intact the scene will be, and the higher the chances of solving the case and catching the killer.
"Right, right." Zoe calmed her anxious heart and quickly replayed the scene in her mind.
Beside her, Beau took out his drawing pen, ready to start.
Zoe recalled the image she had seen. It was a living room with a huge floor-to-ceiling window.
The curtains were blue and mostly drawn, but through a few gaps, Zoe could see some of the decorations on a tall building next door.
Fortunately, while she hadn’t seen the killer’s face, she had gotten a very clear look at the victim.
Beau’s artistic skills had improved by leaps and bounds recently, and he quickly sketched out everything Zoe had described.
"Leave it to me. I’ll have the location identified within ten minutes," Officer Lee said, patting his chest confidently. He then took the two sketches and returned to his desk. This was his specialty.
Everyone in the office focused their attention on Officer Lee. The weight of their expectant gazes made him unconsciously speed up his work.
The others gathered around him, with Officer Lee at the center of the huddle.
A few colleagues passing by saw the scene. Though they wondered what was going on, they suppressed their curiosity and went back to their own tasks.
They had their own piles of work to do and no time to waste standing around.
If it was something major, they’d find out soon enough. There was no rush.
While they waited, Zoe picked up a drawing pen Beau had left on the desk, drew a small door on a blank sheet of paper, and wrote down the address and unit number of her rental apartment in Varden.
She opened it. Her hand passed through smoothly; she could even feel the dust on a nearby cabinet.
’So this kind works, but why didn’t the other one?’
Zoe stared quizzically at the dust on her fingertips as a strange suspicion began to form in her mind.
’Could it be... that scene hasn’t happened yet?’
’Is that why I couldn’t go through to stop or interfere with it?’
"What is it? Did you think of something?" Heath asked, noticing the sudden change in Zoe’s expression.
Zoe shook her head. "I have a theory, but I’m not sure yet. I’ll tell you after I’ve verified it."
Since she put it that way, Heath nodded and didn’t press the issue, turning his attention back to Officer Lee.
In less than ten minutes, Officer Lee had identified a woman from the sketches and, based on the other features in the drawings, pinpointed the exact location of the crime scene.
"The crime scene should be in Yvette Yates’s own living room. And right about now is when she gets home from work," Officer Lee reported, giving his findings and the specific address to Zoe, who was waiting beside him.
Zoe shot to her feet. "Now that we know, let’s go now!"
"You’re going too? Why don’t you rest here at the station and wait for news from us?" Evan Keller said, looking at Zoe with disapproval. They didn’t know what they were walking into, and if possible, he didn’t want Zoe to risk coming along.
Besides, she had just gotten back from the Ford Family’s place, immediately used her ability again, and discovered another case. It would be too exhausting for her to keep rushing around like this.
Zoe shook her head, declining Evan Keller’s kind offer. She wouldn’t be at ease unless she went to verify this case herself.
"It’s fine. If she’s coming, she’s coming. It won’t be that dangerous if she sticks with us," Heath sighed, patting Evan’s shoulder to stop him from saying anything more.
The decision was made quickly.
Evan Keller would take his team, while Sean Hughes would remain at the station to provide support if needed.
Zoe would go along, with Heath Hale, Barry Quinn, and Monkey acting as her bodyguards.
As they were about to leave, the Chief got the news and hurried over.
After getting a clear picture of the situation, he looked at Zoe and urged her, "No matter what happens, your safety comes first!"
"Don’t worry, I know how to weigh the risks," Zoe promised with a grin.
’I’m not an idiot. Of course I know what’s more important!’
The Chief stared at Zoe until he was sure she had taken his words to heart, then waved a hand, dismissing them.
From the vision to the sketch, the identification, and then their departure...
The entire process took no more than half an hour.
Another half an hour passed before their car reached the destination’s residential complex.
"We’re here. Let’s hurry up and take a look." After the car stopped, Zoe and her group quickly got out.
Just as they reached the elevator doors on the ground floor, Zoe’s gaze was drawn to someone in the distance.
"Heath, look! Quick, look!" Zoe’s eyes widened. Once she got a clear look at the person’s face, she began frantically patting Heath Hale’s arm, her voice unconsciously dropping to a whisper.
Alerted by Zoe’s reaction, the others followed her gaze and saw their target, Yvette Yates, standing right there, waiting for the elevator.
The victim wasn’t dead!
Then what had Zoe seen?
Had she come back from the dead?
Evan Keller didn’t doubt Zoe’s ability. His mind was racing. ’The target’s an only child, right? She shouldn’t have any siblings. Could someone have deliberately disguised themselves to look like her to throw us off?’
"I get it now!"
