My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 193: The Verdict
Chapter 193: Chapter 193: The Verdict
Evan Keller didn’t want to believe a child could be so wicked.
However, the evidence gathered during the investigation pointed to too many coincidences.
They were so coincidental it was unbelievable—so coincidental that they aroused Evan Keller’s suspicion.
After figuring out First Brother Miller’s father’s personality, Boss Logan spent a month orchestrating a plot. He caused a fatal drug interaction that left the man’s life hanging by a thread. This not only stopped the man from constantly harassing him but also allowed Boss Logan to successfully distance himself from the incident.
Even though everyone knew he must have had a hand in it, there was nothing they could do.
Then, he had his daughter pretend to be meek and obedient, dressing and styling herself like Miss Ford to make her husband think she had changed her ways and was no longer so extreme.
Riddled with guilt, the husband naturally agreed to small requests like coming home to have dinner with their child.
A month of those meals was all it took for his body to break down.
Evan Keller looked at Boss Logan. He could only be thankful that, from start to finish, their only target had been the scumbag husband. Neither Miss Ford nor Wendy Logan’s child had been harmed.
A flicker of smugness crossed Boss Logan’s eyes. ’This was a plan I came up with after extensive research.’
’From start to finish, I only ever made one dish per day for my daughter to bring home. As for the others, I certainly never forced that Miss Ford to make them.’
’I dote on my daughter, so of course I cook all sorts of delicious things for her every day. What could be more normal!’
’As for what other people do, I can’t control it, and it’s none of my business.’
’So even if something bad happens, it has absolutely nothing to do with me!’
"Your analysis is brilliant, Officer Keller, but I really didn’t do it. I never expected she would follow my recipes to the letter, now did I?
This chat log doesn’t prove anything. It’s just me giving some cooking advice to a fan," Boss Logan said, his expression innocent, as if the thought had never crossed his mind.
"So, you’re admitting you taught her these recipes every day?" Evan Keller pressed.
The profile picture was too obvious for Boss Logan to deny. He recalled the research he’d done on a customer’s phone and, confident he hadn’t broken any laws, nodded. "Yes, that’s my chat log. So what?"
Evan Keller saw the smugness hidden deep in Boss Logan’s eyes. He closed the file and said coldly, "You are a suspect in a case of intentional injury and attempted murder with indirect intent. If you have anything else to say, you can say it to the judge."
Boss Logan’s eyes flew open. He slammed his fists on the table. "Make yourself clear! How am I a suspect for attempted murder with indirect intent?!"
Seeing he wouldn’t give up, Evan Keller stood before him and underlined several passages with his pen.
Boss Logan looked and saw they were all his own suggestions, recommending that she try certain dishes.
Sometimes, to get Miss Ford to agree, Boss Logan would even describe the texture and taste of the dish to persuade her to try it.
"This persuasive language, whether viewed subjectively or objectively, resulted in physical harm to the victim. That constitutes intentional and unlawful injury to another person.
If we hadn’t made this accidental discovery from today’s car crash, and he had died from eating those meals, it would be murder with indirect intent. Because he didn’t die, it’s *attempted*. Understand?" Evan Keller stared at Boss Logan as he explained. Then he added, "Don’t think you can exploit legal loopholes to commit crimes. You’ll only end up hurting yourself and others."
With that, Evan Keller ignored the stunned Boss Logan and walked out with the file.
"Is it handled?" Zoe Sawyer asked, leaning against Sean Hughes as she watched Evan Keller emerge.
"It’s handled. The rest is up to them. Now, we just have to pack our things and get ready for a promotion and a raise!" Evan Keller set the file on a table by the door, put his hands on his hips, and let out a long sigh of relief.
’Finally, it’s over!’
Although the case wasn’t complicated, Evan Keller felt mentally exhausted.
"Okay, stop overthinking it. Congratulations to us! We get to keep being colleagues." Zoe Sawyer grabbed Sean Hughes with one hand and Heath Hale with the other, pulling them over to Evan Keller. She held her fist out to the middle.
The four of them bumped fists.
"Let’s keep up the good work and watch out for each other!"
「A few days later」
The verdict in Boss Logan’s case was announced. He was found guilty of intentional injury. Combined with the charge of attempted murder with indirect intent, he was sentenced to seven years.
Wendy Logan was ruled an accomplice and sentenced to three years.
Her husband succumbed to his injuries from the car crash the following day. His already weakened body couldn’t recover.
Miss Ford took the compensation money from First Brother Miller’s family and the at-fault driver’s family, terminated her pregnancy, and went back to her parents’ house.
Wendy Logan’s child was taken in by their grandmother, who lived in another city.
As for the Ford Family and the at-fault driver’s family, they all faced the consequences. Compensation was paid and sentences were served; no one got away with it.
By the time the case’s outcome was public, the new head of the Varden West Precinct had finally arrived.
"Well now, you must be Sawyer, right? Quite the looker! Come on, come on, you’re all young. You should get to know each other. The more friends you have, the more doors open for you." A portly man with a face like a Maitreya Buddha stood before Zoe Sawyer, his smile the very picture of amiability.
He then promptly grabbed two young men standing nearby, clapping them on the back with a large hand and an enthusiastic tone.
The two young officers who were pulled over had placid expressions, as if they had already accepted their fate or had perhaps been briefed in advance.
After being dragged over, they even extended their hands to greet her.
Zoe Sawyer gave an awkward smile and slowly shuffled backward.
"Hey, you fatty! Trying to poach my people the second you walk in the door? Have you no shame?" The chief strode in front of Zoe Sawyer, glaring menacingly at the portly chief before him.
He simultaneously gestured to Evan Keller and the others behind him, telling them to quickly get Zoe Sawyer to the car and leave.
’Don’t be fooled by this portly chief’s friendly face,’ the chief thought. ’He’s the craftiest one of all!’
’Bringing a couple of handsome guys over without a word... Thank god Sawyer already said she wouldn’t be poached, or I’d be losing several of my best officers!’
At this thought, the chief shot another glare at Heath Hale. ’Useless man!’
’If he’d just managed to win Zoe Sawyer’s heart, would I have to be this worried?!’
Heath Hale, on the receiving end of the chief’s misplaced anger yet again, felt helpless. ’I already told him you can’t force matters of the heart!’
After receiving the chief’s signal, Evan Keller grabbed Zoe Sawyer and made a run for it.
The two handsome officers who had come with the portly chief tried to block their path but were intercepted by Heath Hale.
After all, Evan Keller and his team were far more familiar with the Varden West Precinct. They quickly shook their pursuers, got into a car at the back entrance, and sped away.
Seeing that his chances with Zoe Sawyer were gone, the portly chief could only shift his focus to the others.
