My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 155: Wyatt Ford
Chapter 155: Chapter 155: Wyatt Ford
"What’s going on?"
Hearing the noise, Evan Keller had to put down his work and go see what was happening with Wyatt Ford.
After all, the man held a lot of information on Old Man Dex. He couldn’t be ignored.
"Liam, please contact the Chief. Explain the situation and have him get in touch with our contacts as soon as possible.
Zoe, you’re with me. We’ll listen in. We might pick up a new lead." Heath Hale thought for a moment before quickly giving out assignments.
As for the others, they were to continue their work on the Pierce Miller case.
Time was tight; everyone had to pull the weight of several people.
By the time Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale arrived outside the interrogation room, Evan Keller had already begun questioning Wyatt Ford.
"Tell me," Evan Keller said, tossing his notebook onto the table and looking at Wyatt Ford. "Your plan, and your unknown boss."
Giving the silent treatment wouldn’t have any effect on someone who’d been running with Old Man Dex for who knows how long.
So, Evan Keller decided not to waste time and get straight to the point.
Wyatt Ford acted as if he hadn’t heard, staring at Evan Keller as he asked his own question again. "You’re the ones who caught me?"
Evan Keller gave him a small smile. "What do you think? Without some special help, do you think we could have brought you in without alerting anyone else?"
"Your partner said you know the most. That we could get a lot of information out of you."
Those words were like flipping a switch. The previously calm Wyatt Ford slammed his fist on the table and snarled through clenched teeth, "I knew it was that bastard Rudy Lane! He wants to take my spot? In his dreams!"
Listening from outside, a flash of understanding crossed Zoe Sawyer’s eyes.
Wyatt Ford was Old Man Dex’s most trusted confidant; none of the other underlings could compare.
If they told Wyatt Ford that Old Man Dex had abandoned him, he would never believe it. But by giving him a vague idea, by not spelling things out, the story became much more credible.
But Wyatt Ford’s reason quickly returned. He calmed down and looked at Evan Keller, his tone certain. "Impossible. You’re lying to me. If he reported me under these circumstances, it’s no different from turning himself in. He’d be arrested, too."
"You’re just trying to provoke me, hoping I’ll let something slip in a panic."
Evan Keller leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms. He didn’t answer the question directly. "We know your exact location now. You think we’re worried about you escaping? Once we’ve rounded you all up, I’ll have all the time and methods I need to make you talk."
"Besides, have you never heard of turning state’s evidence? Sure, he committed crimes too, but if he shows a good attitude, admits his guilt, and provides key evidence, his sentence will be much lighter than what you stubborn types will get."
"With good behavior, he could get a reduced sentence and walk free. Meanwhile, you lot? The grass on your graves will be a mile high. No, wait, cremation is all the rage now. You won’t even get a grave for grass to grow on."
Wyatt Ford had been skeptical, but after hearing Evan Keller’s speech, he found it highly plausible.
"Does this count as coercing a confession?" Zoe Sawyer asked, tugging nervously on Heath Hale’s sleeve.
’That kind of tactic is illegal. It’s not allowed.’
’But surely Evan Keller wouldn’t make such a rookie mistake, right?’
"Don’t worry," Heath Hale said, shaking his head to reassure her. "He hasn’t lied about anything. He’s just being deliberately vague.
The guy inside was already suspicious. Under this much pressure, he’ll naturally assume someone betrayed them."
From start to finish, Evan Keller never actually said there was a mole helping them. Everything he said was, strictly speaking, the truth.
But to an uninformed Wyatt Ford, it all meant something else entirely.
Once she was sure there was no issue, Zoe Sawyer relaxed and continued to watch the interrogation.
"That damn Rudy Lane..."
Wyatt Ford growled the name through clenched teeth, but when faced with Evan Keller’s follow-up questions, he clamped his jaw shut and said nothing.
"Here’s your chance," Evan Keller said, his tone full of temptation as he stared at Wyatt Ford. "You know more than any of them. If you tell us everything you know, your sentence will definitely be lighter than theirs."
Wyatt Ford stared down at his hands, not saying a word, his posture one of pure defiance.
Evan Keller didn’t speak either. The two of them remained at a standstill.
An hour passed like this. Wyatt Ford remained restrained, without a single sip of water.
Watching Evan Keller take a slow drink of water, he couldn’t help but swallow hard.
"You..."
Wyatt Ford opened his mouth, but just as he was about to speak, there was a knock on the interrogation room door.
Heath Hale opened the door and walked in. "The teams are in position," he said to Evan Keller. "We can move in and arrest them all now."
"Good, I’m on my way." Evan Keller stood up and started walking out, acting as if he hadn’t heard Wyatt Ford speak.
Just before leaving, Evan Keller stopped, turned back to look at Wyatt Ford, and gave him a slight smile. "Now, you’ve lost your chance."
Then, without waiting for a reaction, he shut the door and left.
Wyatt Ford, who had been about to ask for a drink of water, was instantly thrown into a panic.
’What does he mean I’ve lost my chance?’
’Are they really going to arrest everyone now?’
’Or did someone else spill all the intel already?’ He thought back to what Evan Keller had said—about the others getting reduced sentences and walking free, while he wouldn’t even have a grave for grass to grow on.
His panic intensified.
’Was I wrong to stay silent just now?’
The more he thought about it, the uglier his expression became. He wanted to call them back, but felt it would be too much of a loss of face. He was torn.
Meanwhile, the three people outside the door paid no mind to Wyatt Ford’s current state.
"The Chief contacted the provincial bureau for backup the moment he got the call.
Right now, half our personnel are lying in wait around the house. The other half, with Sean Hughes and his team’s help, are disarming the bombs in the various old residential complexes." Heath Hale quickly briefed Evan Keller on the situation.
The main issue was the severity of the situation. A group of criminals, deliberately back for revenge, posed a threat to society that couldn’t be understated.
That’s why the provincial bureau dispatched people to help the instant they received the Chief’s request for assistance.
They rushed over as fast as possible, with no delays on the road, which is how they managed to arrive in the vicinity in just about an hour.
Now, both teams are moving in sync. Once the bombs are disarmed and the threat is neutralized, they can storm the place and arrest everyone.
"Excellent!" Evan Keller exclaimed, pumping his arm in excitement after hearing the news.
Heath Hale looked at Zoe Sawyer and said, "Get ready. Open a door and get us to that location as fast as possible!"
