Chapter 145: Chapter 145: Turning Varden Upside Down

Zoe Sawyer sat ramrod straight, her expression serious as she stared at Heath Hale.

"The provincial bureau just made a breakthrough in their interrogation. They contacted us with an urgent update. Felix Tate confessed. He gave up the exact location of the other team.

The moment they got the confession, the provincial bureau sent a team over. The bastards got tipped off and tried to run, but they were all caught," Evan Keller said with a smile, waving the file in his hand at Zoe, his voice filled with delight.

Zoe heard him out. ’This is great news,’ she thought. ’So why did everyone look like someone had died when I walked in?’

’I thought something else had gone wrong!’

Evan Keller, perhaps sensing Zoe’s angry glare, coughed awkwardly.

He had just wanted to tease her a little.

Realizing it wasn’t anything serious, Zoe let out a sigh of relief. As long as everything was okay, that was all that mattered.

"One more thing," Heath Hale said, rapping his knuckles on the table to draw Zoe’s attention. "Remember Ruby, who we arrested a while back? We’ve squeezed everything we can out of her. She’s been sentenced to death, with immediate execution."

Zoe had specifically looked into it before. A sentence of immediate execution had to be carried out within seven days, no extensions.

And given the heinous nature of Ruby’s case, it would almost certainly be carried out as quickly as possible. Extra personnel would even be assigned during her transfer to ensure there were absolutely no slip-ups.

"That’s fantastic!"

Zoe clapped her hands in delight. Although she knew the severity of Ruby’s crimes meant she’d never get out of prison, she couldn’t fully rest easy until the sentence was officially handed down.

But while things were cheerful at the police station, the atmosphere elsewhere was anything but calm.

"Are you telling me that another one of your little crews was wiped out by the Varden police?"

The speaker was a beautiful young woman, sitting with her legs crossed in an executive chair, her expression placid.

Her long legs were clad in jeans. Staring at the man standing before her with his head bowed, she suddenly kicked him in the shoulder. "Last time, wasn’t it also you who was chased out of the country by those same cops, tail between your legs?"

"...Yes, Boss." The young man gritted the words out, forcing himself to endure the pain radiating from his shoulder.

This man was none other than the boss who had escaped across the border during the human skin case.

’Varden had always been Ruby’s and Jim Lynch’s territory. The Boss had always wanted to infiltrate the police department there, but the chiefs of East and West Varden were as wily as old foxes, kicking out every mole she planted. It made it impossible for him to get a piece of the pie. Those two lunatics were capable enough, but they were obsessed with their little murder games. Now, not only had they gotten themselves caught, but they’d also taken a considerable number of his own men down with them. Then his own operation was inexplicably surrounded. If he hadn’t been quick on his feet, he’d probably be rotting in prison right now. This time, he had figured that since Anne Dawson had never been to Varden, her unfamiliar face wouldn’t attract attention. He’d planned to take advantage of the Varden police letting their guard down after cracking several big cases to rebuild his influence. But he never expected they’d be targeted the moment they arrived and wiped out in one fell swoop. Even his strongholds and warehouses in other areas were cleaned out completely. He had just managed to catch his breath, and now this. He’d suffered another devastating loss, and word had gotten back to the Boss. What a complete and utter disgrace.’

"Alright. I’ll give you one more chance. There’s a necklace at Varden Bank that I’ve taken a liking to. Bring it to me.

And while you’re at it, leave the police there with some... fond memories. You know what to do, don’t you, Six?" the Boss stared at him, tapping her fingers lightly on the armrest. Her expression was playful, but it was underpinned by an unyielding, non-negotiable demand.

Six bowed his head again, his expression humble. "I understand, Boss. I’ll take my leave now."

After walking out of the office, Six’s humble expression turned exceptionally grim.

’He and the Boss hadn’t been the only ones in the office. Several other people were there, too! Including his sworn rival! While the Boss was scolding him, Six had felt his rival’s mocking gaze fixed on him. He’d been utterly humiliated!’

Back in his own office, Six waved over one of his trusted subordinates.

"Wasn’t there a guy, Dexter Bishop or something, who said he wanted to pledge allegiance to me? If he can turn Varden upside down and get me some payback, I’ll approve his request." Six plopped down into his chair. After taking a moment to calm himself, he suddenly recalled someone of that name.

One of Six’s confidants leaned in and replied in a low voice, "Yes. I looked into him. He used to be based in Varden, too. Later, his crew was wiped out by a cop named Evan Keller, and he was forced to flee in disgrace.

Now he’s hoping to see you, Boss, return to Varden, stage a comeback, and get revenge for what happened."

To make sure he hadn’t been duped, the confidant had specifically researched this Dexter Bishop.

Only after confirming the man’s story was true and that he had some real ability did the confidant report the matter to Six.

After hearing the full report, Six nodded. ’Not bad,’ he thought. ’Worth a shot.’

"He sounds decent enough. Let him give it a try." Six didn’t refuse. There was no reason to turn down free labor that fell right into his lap.

’Once they’ve thrown Varden into chaos, I can have my own people sneak in and steal what the Boss wants. If this mission fails too, my life is forfeit!’

"Yes, sir!"

The confidant accepted the order and turned to leave, heading off to contact the man named Dexter Bishop, also known as Old Man Dex.

Meanwhile, back with the Boss, after Six had left, the man standing beside her couldn’t help but ask, "Boss, Six has clearly been exposed to the police there. Why are you sending him back this time?"

"They probably have his photo at every police station, just waiting for him to show his face so they can arrest him."

"Six might not be of much use around here anymore, but he’s still valuable in other, more chaotic regions. There’s no need to sacrifice him in Varden."

The Boss was looking through some files. Hearing her subordinate’s question, she looked up, revealing a pair of sharp, almond-shaped eyes.

She simply stared at the man who had just spoken, saying nothing for a long time.

The man, who had been smug moments before, faltered under her imposing gaze and dropped the files in his hands. The Boss then offered an explanation that wasn’t really an explanation: "Varden is hiding an earth-shattering secret. And my greatest hobby is uncovering such secrets."

The man lowered his head and said nothing. As the Boss moved, the papers on the floor shifted, revealing photos and a list of names.

On them were, shockingly, the list of residents from the nursing home where Frank Keller used to live.

And the transcripts of several interrogations.
