Chapter 129: Chapter 129: The Boss Wants to Avenge a Past Disgrace

Gavin Owens specifically warned them about the situation, afraid they might get careless and be discovered talking in the bathroom.

Of course, there was another, more important reason.

If possible, Gavin Owens hoped Zoe Sawyer and Vivian Dunn would leave this place as soon as possible, preferably to be replaced by men.

He wasn’t sexist. The fact that they had been chosen after beating out so many others from the police department proved they were exceptionally skilled.

It was just that the ubiquitous hidden cameras made this a less than friendly environment for women.

According to the intel he’d gathered, many of the female members who stayed on the second floor had another, more important reason besides owing Anne Dawson and her people a huge amount of money.

That reason was that Anne Dawson had all sorts of videos of them.

Videos of all sorts, in every sense of the word.

While being wary of being secretly filmed, they also had to deal with groping hands and bullying that could happen at any moment.

Having been undercover in this organization for so long, Gavin Owens had seen far too much of this.

While it was normal for new recruits to be bullied and hazed, the reality was that the environment was simply better for men to survive in than for women. That’s why he was even more eager for Zoe Sawyer and Vivian Dunn to get out of this quagmire.

Vivian Dunn was taken aback when she received Gavin Owens’s warning and understood his unspoken meaning.

It was normal for an organization like this to have surveillance, but for it to make a police officer with so many years of experience this wary, it must be serious.

’But that isn’t a decision for me to make. If I had a choice, I’d want to stay, too.’

’Running away from trouble isn’t my style. Besides, if the surveillance is really that tight, then there’s no one more suitable for this than Zoe Sawyer.’

Of course, Vivian Dunn couldn’t possibly tell Gavin Owens this.

She could only reassure him and tell him not to overthink it.

They wouldn’t have come without having their own methods, so he didn’t need to worry too much.

’Still, to be able to gather so much information under this kind of surveillance... this Gavin Owens next to me is not someone to be underestimated.’

After processing the information, Vivian Dunn grew restless. She wished she could go back right now and report everything she knew to the department.

But that would be too obvious, so she could only sit on the sofa and play with her phone.

The phone Vivian Dunn was using now was a burner. It had no information about her work on it, only the most ordinary chat logs and group chats for things like makeup and online shopping.

At the same time, Vivian Dunn acted as if she had no idea there were cameras overhead, casually sending messages and laughing out loud from time to time, as if she hadn’t noticed anything unusual at all.

"Anne, we haven’t found anything unusual. Do you think we’re just overthinking things?" Several people were sitting in a room on the fourth floor near the stairwell.

In front of each person were several computers. A closer look would reveal that the screens displayed surveillance footage from every angle of the entire building.

You could say that if they wanted to, they could know who was doing what, anywhere in the building.

This was precisely how they kept that group of women on the second floor under their thumb.

Anne Dawson stared at the phone screen in the monitor. Just ordinary greetings, chats, or some bargain-hunting game.

At a glance, she really couldn’t see anything out of the ordinary.

Looking from another camera angle, she couldn’t see anything wrong with her expression either.

Anne Dawson breathed a sigh of relief and patted the surveillance operator’s shoulder. Her tone was a bit helpless. "Can’t be helped. It’s the boss’s orders. Besides, tonight’s operation is our first major move since coming here. We have to be cautious."

Anne Dawson felt her judgment was sound. Zoe Sawyer and Vivian Dunn were just a couple of plump lambs; no need to be too concerned. Just squeeze them dry for all they were worth.

Besides, they were searched every time they entered or left, so they couldn’t take anything out. They also hadn’t been allowed to contact anyone from the second floor, so they couldn’t possibly know anything.

But the boss had given the order, so she had no choice but to obey.

Speaking of which, the surveillance operator had a question. "Anne, why did we have to come all the way out here?"

"Weren’t there much better options?"

Anne Dawson slapped the operator on the back of the head, her tone sharp. "None of your business! Just watch the monitors! Remember to notify me immediately if anything comes up."

With that, Anne Dawson turned and stormed out.

After she was long gone, the person next to the operator leaned over conspiratorially and said, "I know why. It’s because the boss’s boss failed in this city before. That’s why they specifically chose this place again this time, to avenge that past defeat."

As for what that failure was, he didn’t know. Everyone around seemed to avoid the topic, so he couldn’t find out the specific reason.

Anne Dawson, already downstairs, was in no mood to listen to their gossip. No one was to leave this house until tonight’s operation was over!

Felix Tate, Howard Irving, Gavin Owens, and two other men were summoned by Anne Dawson. She had a mission to assign them.

As for Zoe Sawyer and Vivian Dunn?

They could just wait on the third floor for a while.

"Huh? Anne?"

Vivian Dunn pretended to be alarmed and chased after her, but only managed to overhear "seven o’clock" and "manpower" before a guard, who had been posted at the stairwell at some point, politely escorted her back.

With no other choice, Vivian Dunn had to go back to the sofa and lean against Zoe Sawyer, playing on her phone.

In reality, however, their hands, hidden under their jackets, were secretly exchanging another piece of information.

Zoe Sawyer didn’t know many hand signals yet, so for now, she could only pass on the most critical piece of information: the time.

She also indicated that the two of them were safe for now, but likely wouldn’t be able to return tonight, so the team shouldn’t worry.

After receiving the new intel from Zoe Sawyer, Evan Keller and the others went on high alert, their eyes glued to the roads and intersections.

As seven o’clock approached, everyone’s nerves were stretched taut. They stared, unblinking, at the intersections where the vehicles might appear.

"I’ve got a suspicious vehicle on my end. Black van, all windows are tinted and can’t be seen through, moving fast." Sean Hughes’s voice came through everyone’s earpieces.

Before Evan Keller could even speak, Team Three on the other side reported in as well.

"I’ve also spotted a suspicious vehicle here, same description as Captain Hughes’s!"

"I’ve got one over here too!"

Although the traffic conditions on the national highway were complex, Sean Hughes and the others immediately noticed something was wrong.

Compared to the surrounding traffic, which wasn’t moving particularly fast, this van was just too suspicious, which was why it caught their attention right away.

When Evan Keller received the news, he and his team were stationed at the intersection with the heaviest traffic—the most likely and most dangerous spot for an appearance.

Upon getting the report, he immediately looked in his direction. Sure enough, a black van was speeding past in the distance.

The vehicle’s description was identical to the ones reported by the other three teams.

Four identical vans, on different sections of the road, at the exact same time.

It was like they had the word "suspicious" tattooed on their foreheads.

"Move in! We have to get control of these vans!"
