My Superpower Leads Me to Murderers
Chapter 120: Training the Ability and the Undercover Mission
Chapter 120: Chapter 120: Training the Ability and the Undercover Mission
Zoe Sawyer stared at the tiny space in front of her and couldn’t stop a curse from slipping out.
Then she remembered Beau was next to her, and she quickly clapped a hand over her mouth, looking guilty.
’Will I be a bad influence on the kid?’
Heath Hale, who had been watching them, strode over. "What is it?" he asked, his tone urgent. "Don’t tell me something else has happened."
As soon as he said that, everyone in the office turned to stare at Zoe Sawyer, their expressions a mix of excitement and tension.
Every time Zoe Sawyer opened a door, she found something unpleasant.
While it was their duty to combat crime, they sometimes felt like things were happening too fast.
Just as Heath Hale reached Zoe Sawyer’s side, he saw the dark void in the middle of the white paper. His breath caught in his throat.
’Did something really happen?’
Zoe Sawyer shook her head and explained why she’d been so agitated. "I don’t think so. I was just trying to relax by doodling and drew a door."
"After I finished, I felt like something was missing, so I just went with my gut and wrote my name and my home address on it. And then... it opened!"
As a novelist, Zoe Sawyer was surprisingly quick to accept the peculiarity of her special ability.
"So this is, what, a conceptual door? As long as I draw it and write an address on it, it opens?" Zoe Sawyer mused, rubbing her chin.
It would be too much trouble to have someone go to her house to verify it right now.
Zoe Sawyer asked Beau for another sheet of paper, drew another door, and on this one, she wrote "Varden West Precinct" and the office number.
Staring at the finished drawing, Zoe Sawyer took a deep breath, placed her hand on it, and pushed.
The drawing revealed a scene identical to the view from their office doorway.
Zoe Sawyer tossed a pencil into it. A second later, a pencil fell to the floor by the office door.
"HOLY SHIT!"
This time, the entire office saw it, and a collective curse rippled through the room.
"Keep it down, keep it down! Don’t let anyone else hear!"
"Oh, right, right!"
Heath Hale’s eyes narrowed. He glanced at his colleagues. He didn’t need to say a word; they all understood this had to be kept secret.
Until they had a clearer understanding of Zoe Sawyer’s newly developed ability, it definitely needed to be kept under wraps.
Used correctly, it could produce some surprising results.
"Zoe, turn on your phone’s flashlight and shine it through. I want to see if it’s a two-way street," Heath Hale said. He walked over, picked up the pencil from the floor, and turned off the office lights.
Barry Quinn, understanding what Heath was doing, drew the surrounding blinds.
The whole office was quickly plunged into darkness. The light from Zoe Sawyer’s phone shone through the paper door on the desk, illuminating the space in front of Heath Hale.
He tried to pass the pencil he was holding back through the light.
’Is it one-way?’
Heath Hale looked at the pencil in his hand, a little disappointed.
If it were two-way, there would be so much more they could do with it.
Zoe Sawyer thought for a moment, then stuck her hand through the door. She wiggled her fingers at Heath Hale and took the pencil from his hand.
After a few more experiments, they began to understand the rules.
The principle was similar to a real door. It had to be drawn by Zoe Sawyer herself, opened with her right hand, and have a detailed address written on the door panel to be activated.
It was two-way only when Zoe Sawyer acted as the medium. The others couldn’t pass objects through; they were blocked by some kind of invisible barrier.
If the words on the door panel were erased or smeared, the door would revert to being an ordinary drawing.
Zoe Sawyer and Heath Hale experimented for over an hour, finally getting a clear grasp of all the parameters.
During that hour, Zoe Sawyer’s drawing speed improved visibly, and she became much faster at writing out the office’s detailed address.
Later, she even drew a door on the wall with chalk, wrote the address on it following the same procedure as with the paper, and it opened just the same.
This was great! The limitations of her ability had been completely shattered!
Zoe Sawyer’s expression was joyful, and she put even more effort into her training.
These were the skills she would depend on to survive. She couldn’t afford to be careless!
Once they had tested every scenario they could think of and were sure they hadn’t missed anything, the two of them put down the pencil and paper and let out a long sigh of relief.
"I feel like I could be an undercover agent. This would be so convenient for passing evidence," Zoe Sawyer said, grinning as she rubbed her wrist. Her tone was teasing.
It felt like this function was developed specifically for her to pass small items.
And Zoe Sawyer discovered that the smaller the door, the less energy it consumed.
"Who knows," Heath Hale replied calmly. "If that time ever comes, you’d better be prepared for me to train you into the ground."
’How could they let someone like Zoe Sawyer, who has zero relevant training, go on an important mission like an undercover op?’
’It’s obviously impossible.’
But soon, the joke Zoe Sawyer had made with the others came true.
"You really want me to go undercover? But I don’t know how to do anything!" Zoe Sawyer pointed at her own nose in disbelief.
It was true that Heath Hale, Barry Quinn, and Monkey had developed a highly targeted training regimen for her, focusing on her weaknesses.
They had taught her everything from physical conditioning and reaction time to marksmanship, and even some surveillance and counter-surveillance techniques.
She was learning, but these weren’t things you could master overnight!
Weren’t they overestimating her by asking her to go undercover now?
Heath Hale, standing beside Zoe Sawyer, spoke up. "Exactly. Isn’t this a bit hasty? She hasn’t fully mastered these skills yet. If something goes wrong, we won’t be able to rescue her in time."
The Chief shook his head. "The fact that she hasn’t learned is exactly what we want."
"She’s going in as an ordinary person. It’s normal for an ordinary person to not know anything. But don’t worry, we already have an officer on the inside, and we’ll arrange for another person to go with her."
At this point, the Chief explained in detail to the people in front of him why Zoe Sawyer had been chosen.
"This time, the target is a cult. They were lying dormant, keeping a low profile, just secretly recruiting followers and expanding their influence. But for some reason, over the last two months, they’ve been making a lot of noise, and their reach has spread from the neighboring province to our area."
"According to intel from our colleague on the inside, the leader’s counter-surveillance skills are formidable. He’s shaken police tails several times, and he’s even sniffed out agents we’ve specifically sent in to infiltrate."
They had approached Zoe Sawyer for this mission not only because she was a newcomer who didn’t have the ingrained habits of a police officer, but also for another, very important reason.
Her newly discovered ability.
A door you can use just by drawing it would be perfect for passing evidence!
Not only would it be hard to detect, but it could also be used to transmit new information in real time, or to dispose of anything that might blow her cover.
It was almost too useful!
Before they could say anything, the Chief rubbed his chin, looked at Zoe Sawyer, and asked a pointed question.
"Sawyer, if I recall correctly, you used to be a novelist, right?"
