Chapter 1539 - 1538: Butting Heads Already
Chapter 1539: Chapter 1538: Butting Heads Already
The immediate discarding of decorum from Lady Kio didn’t ’look’ the greatest in the eyes of our Nobility, but most of them were incapable of even just looking at her without their eyes trailing to places they shouldn’t have been.
As for the woman herself she didn’t seem to care one bit about where people looked since she was far too busy grinning triumphantly at my Mother, who was attempting – with very little success – to ignore her ’old friend’ who was getting progressively closer the moment they saw one another.
My decision to step up to my own Mother and attempt to be a blockade between them immediately backfired since apparently the other Dogkin woman had a very clear agenda for today, and it involved both my Mother as well as myself.
Thankfully she at least had the decorum of speaking quietly when she walked right up to us, but anyone who had any experience whatsoever with reading body language could tell that this wasn’t a ’happy’ encounter.
“Hello again, Julie~! How fun is it to meet again under these circumstances, hm~?”
Leaning close and grinning at Mother first, the petite Dogkin got a little too close for her since she took a step back, though all that did was allow her to turn towards me as she added “Congratulations, Katherine~! You’re most likely carrying a litter for my daughter~! What a fun turn of events, hm~?”
The Sultana silently walked up behind her wife while Mom just sighed and rested a hand on Mother’s shoulder, giving it a slight squeeze to reassure her that there was no need to beat up on the wife of someone so powerful.
I could tell that she wanted to though since her arms twitched while her smile tightened into something far less friendly, yet all that did was make Lady Kio all the more smug as she added “The first one to get with child was your daughter~!”
“And? Why are you acting like this is some achievement that YOU earned? Your daughter is far more tolerable and acceptable than you ever were, and she is certainly head and shoulders above you in terms of talent.”
“What did you-!”
Her false congratulations immediately turned into a desire to fight when Mother said that, but thankfully the Sultana pulled her back and turned her around, walking up to Jahi and keeping her from making more of a scene.”
“I will never understand what causes you two to have this sort of relationship…”
Mother just scoffed and fixed her dress as she murmured “I can’t help that she’s just an irritating, unsufferable bitch who acts superior all the time…”, which made it clear just how pissed my Mother was since she rarely cursed, if ever.
Letting out a long sigh, she removed most of her lingering resentment and instead turned towards me, her expression relaxing and lighting up as she pulled me into a hug, rubbing her cheek against mine and just holding me for a moment.
Neither of us could see it but we had caused a bit of an argument between the Sultana and her wife as the Sultana made a comment about us, immediately shifting her wife’s ire from my Mother over to herself.
Anput would tell me about it later but for now I was just enjoying the moment, relishing the warmth that she brought with her that I had vowed to never take for granted in this new life of mine; whilst I only had one of two biological parents, I was grateful that the one I had was as amazing as she was.
“I still can’t help but feel that you are far too young for this…”
Her murmur made me chuckle as I asked “But I am old enough to be wed? Is this not what happens to someone who marries?”, earning a playful swat on the shoulder as she just tried to reprimand me for ’talking back’.
“While the Mother of one of your partners grates me immensely, she wasn’t wrong in saying that you most likely are going to have your first child with the Jackalkin, though… that worries me since me having just a single Dogkin daughter was rather ’unnusual’, so…”
“Yeah, that’s not something I am particularly looking forwards to, but… it just comes with whom I’ve loved, does it not? And aren’t you excited to have more than one grandchild~?”
She gave me a conflicted smile at that since at first she had a fair bit of happiness before Mom muttered “Damn that makes me feel old…”, which… yeah; besides that Mother replied “I would be if I didn’t have two of my own to deal with already.”
“Well now Alessandra and Lakshmi will have a lot of friends~! Isn’t that great~?”
Mother raised a brow at that as she murmured “Lakshmi, sure, but Alessandra might not want friends… unless they are quiet.”, which made me chuckle and shrug since that was for the future; for me I was still just sort of wondering how ’lucky’ I was going to get, and honestly I had no idea what I wanted.
Did I want just one since that would be ’easiest’, or was I hoping that Anput might have some particularly strong seed that would turn into two to five separate babies..?
What about the slim chance of Jahi or Leone being the ones to get me pregnant instead; was I hoping that I could potentially replicate what happened to Mother here, or was I just wanting to have that single child of whomever managed to guide their seed deepest?
Taking a step back, Mother rested her hands on my shoulders before looking pointedly at my belly, which had nothing to show just yet, though after a moment she raised a brow and asked “Did you ever learn about Caninekin babies..?”
I shook my head, making her smile turn wry as she pat my shoulder and gestured for me to walk towards the manor where we would all be staying, waiting to explain that to me until sometime later… though my curiosity was most certainly piqued.
