Chapter 422 - 278: The Old Couple’s Plan
What nineteen-year-old boy doesn’t like to have fun?
The one sore spot was a dispute that had been dragging on for days between Chen Yuan and Pei Youwen, with no good resolution in sight—the matter of hiring a secretary.
For a company’s top leader, a secretary is crucial. They serve as a vital link between the executive level and the rest of the company, a far cry from the decorative "vases" often portrayed in movies and TV shows. In reality, a chairman’s secretary is exceptionally capable.
Within the company, they represent the chairman’s personal authority and hold a very high position. Aside from the most critical decisions, over eighty percent of directives are issued through the secretary.
She can help the chairman screen and process business, manage communication with the board of directors and various departments, negotiate with other companies, and even handle the chairman’s personal schedule.
This was all according to Pei Youwen, and Chen Yuan couldn’t deny there was some truth to his words. But no matter how much Pei talked it up, Chen Yuan refused to make the final call.
He just couldn’t accept the idea of another person being responsible for his life—it was a matter of fundamental principle. Besides, Chen Yuan had no idea if Jiangg Yao and Jiangg Ning would even agree.
Chen Yuan tried to compromise, suggesting to Pei Youwen that perhaps they could find a capable man for the job. But Pei Youwen was completely unappreciative, insisting it had to be a woman with an excellent image and outstanding temperament.
It got to the point where Chen Yuan started to wonder if Pei was trying to shoehorn one of his own relatives into the position. The suspicion, which hadn’t even crossed his mind before, was starting to take root.
After a three-day tug-of-war and countless meetings, Chen Yuan still couldn’t understand the reason for Pei Youwen’s persistence. He was being pushed to the point where he started to wonder, ’Am I really just being too stubborn about this?’
’Do I really have to hire a chairman’s secretary?’
...
On Friday, the last class of the afternoon ended.
Though most of the students in the lecture hall were physically present, their minds had already drifted elsewhere.
It was the middle of spring. The campus was alive with the sights and sounds of blooming flowers, chirping birds, and buzzing insects. Warm sunlight bathed the tender green grass, and budding willow branches swayed in the breeze.
These students had long since made their after-school plans. Some wanted to "explore the mysteries of life" with their boyfriends, while others planned to team up with their roommates for a murder mystery game. Of course, even more had booked a lavish dinner for the evening—preceded by a trip to a KTV to belt out a few songs, unleash some of their restless energy, and down a couple of beers.
Such was the leisurely life of a university student—provided, of course, that their pockets weren’t empty.
For a girl like Li Bing, who didn’t come from a particularly well-off family, these leisurely activities were out of reach. Her only thought after class was to hurry and catch the bus to her tutoring job to earn two hours’ worth of pay.
People really do think differently depending on their circumstances.
Even though Li Bing didn’t often go out for fun, she was still very content. Especially each time she received her tutoring payment; the generous pay always made her reflect, ’Knowledge really can bring wealth and change your destiny.’
In the classroom, discipline seemed strict.
But if the old professor were to focus his gaze and scan the room, he would easily discover that most of the students were slacking off. Their minds weren’t on their studies at all, and the last ten-odd minutes of class were an especially long and torturous wait.
They glanced at the clock every few seconds.
"BRRRING—"
The pleasant chime of the bell rang, signaling the end of class. The old professor stopped mid-sentence, but before he could even dismiss them, everyone had already grabbed their things, stood up, and begun to crowd the aisle.
"Yuan," Wei Zhen said, looking at Chen Yuan as he stood up. "You still heading to your part-time job today? Want to go to the internet cafe for a bit instead? We haven’t been in ages."
"Nah, can’t. Maybe another time. I promised to take Jiangg Yao shopping," Chen Yuan said, waving him off. He walked a few steps, then turned back as if he’d just remembered something. "Hey, if you guys are playing late, message me. I might be able to hop on for a couple of rounds when I get home."
"All right, then."
"Sigh. Having a girlfriend really changes a guy. I’m jealous." Liu Nan leaned back in his chair with a smug air, only to be met with a loud CRASH.
The chairs in the lecture hall were cheap and often broken. The back of Liu Nan’s chair was faulty, and as his body shot back, he toppled over backward as if he’d lost his balance completely.
This sent the nearby students into a fit of laughter.
After leaving campus, Chen Yuan drove toward Fengting District.
It had to be said that since Jiangg Ning’s departure, their complicated three-way dynamic had simplified into a straightforward relationship between two people.
Yaoyao and Chen Yuan’s relationship had advanced by leaps and bounds.
She had put in a lot of effort and was naturally reaping the rewards. For the past couple of days, Chen Yuan had rarely been harsh with her and went along with her on most things. He found that he no longer disliked her lively, pampered nature; in fact, he was secretly starting to enjoy it.
Men were indeed easy to please; you just had to know the right way to handle them.
Being headstrong and willful all the time wouldn’t work. Even for the most beautiful woman, looks alone couldn’t sustain a long-term relationship. Jiangg Yao had found the right approach, capturing his heart with consideration and gentleness instead.
Chen Yuan was getting hooked.
Two blocks later, he reached the entrance of Fengting District. From a distance, Chen Yuan spotted Jiangg Yao at once. She was standing by the side of the road, holding a purse.
Jiangg Yao was wearing a white dress with a lace-trimmed, openwork hem. The skirt was neither too long nor too short, ending just above her knees and giving her a distinct princess-like air.
In a departure from her usual style, she was actually wearing heels. They weren’t stilettos like the kind Jiangg Ning wore, just a modest three-centimeter heel, but they were enough to make her legs look incredibly long and slender.
Paired with the dress, she looked almost ethereal.
