Chapter 328 - 218: Completely Exposed, Chen Yuan Is Devastated and Collapses
“A friend of mine had a birthday the day before yesterday. Her name is Wan. She’s a regular at the maid cafe and is pretty close with Ran and some of the other girls. When we went to buy a gift, Jiangg’s sister took us. She said Wan has always been very good to her, so both she and her sister wanted to get her a gift.”
Li Bing stared at Chen Yuan’s face, her words coming out a little faster than usual. She was probably cherishing this time alone with him. After all, they rarely had a chance to interact with his roommates always around. She wanted to say a few more words while they were gone.
For some reason, it made her really happy.
Emotions could be strange sometimes. Li Bing couldn’t figure out why she wanted to talk to Chen Yuan so much, but when Wei Zhen had called and said they were all getting dinner together…
…she had been so excited.
She couldn’t even focus on her homework.
“You seem surprised?” Li Bing’s voice was soft, tinged with confusion.
Chen Yuan was stunned. The expression on his face froze as a frantic storm erupted in his mind. It was as if a gust of wind had blown away all the haze.
The world instantly brightened, illuminating everything. All things became so clear, without the slightest obstruction.
The word “twins” was like the key that opened the gate to heaven, dispelling all of Chen Yuan’s confusion.
If they were twins, then everything that had seemed wrong since the beginning could be explained.
Chen Yuan cautiously pieced together the hypothesis. His mouth felt dry, and he could no longer control the expression on his face.
Why was Jiangg never willing to talk about her family?
Why would she tell such an absurd lie about having multiple personalities?
Why were there clothes in completely different styles in her apartment? Two pairs of slippers, two sets of toiletries, two sets of cute tableware, and even two sets of blankets in the closet? Why did she never invite him into her suite, and even when he went over, why was the door to the second bedroom always shut tight?
Why did Jiangg Ruxue say she had two daughters? Why was the home of Jiangg, a woman who showed no signs of being into otaku culture, filled with so much stuff that only a hardcore otaku would buy?
Why would she disappear for a while only to reappear as her “other personality”? Why were the states of her “multiple personalities” so stable, and why were they jealous of each other?
Why did the Heartbeat Diary have to distinguish between names? Why was Jiangg an amazing cook one moment, and couldn’t even hold a spatula the next?
Why was one of them so quirky and free-spirited, while the other was her complete opposite—gentle and sophisticated?
Why would one of them, either Ningning or Yaoyao, just disappear…
All these absurd things, when put together, pointed to an even more absurd truth.
The multiple personalities were just a cover-up for the fact that they were twins!
Chen Yuan had never once considered this possibility. A single sentence from Li Bing had instantly solved the puzzle he had been racking his brain over for days to no avail!
In that instant, he felt as if something had exploded in his head. A massive mushroom cloud seemed to rise from the ground as his thoughts simply crashed.
His mind went blank.
“Sir, here’s a complimentary drink from the restaurant. You can join our group chat. We have special promotions every weekend, especially for you college students… Sir?”
A waitress holding a coconut drink was speaking to Chen Yuan.
But he just sat there, dazed.
The waitress felt a little awkward and glanced at Li Bing.
“You can just leave it with me.”
“Okay, then. Miss, would you be able to join the group chat?”
“Give me the QR code, I’ll scan it.”
“Okay, thank you.” A smile instantly bloomed on the waitress’s face, as if Li Bing had solved a huge problem for her.
A moment later, Quan Yafeng returned from paying the bill, clutching a small receipt in his hand.
“Those two unlucky bastards aren’t back yet. Don’t tell me they both fell into the toilet? Taking a piss for this long…”
He scratched his head and sat down awkwardly. His eyes quickly darted over Li Bing before he subconsciously started fiddling with the receipt in his fingers.
“Drink up! We’re brothers, no need for formalities.”
“Let the drinks do the talking!”
“Yeah, we’re all bros.”
A wave of boisterous noise came from another table, mingling with the hazy smell of beer and floating through the greasy Sichuan restaurant.
Outside, the streets were bustling with cars and pedestrians.
At the front counter, the apron-clad proprietress was clacking away on a calculator. Every so often, the crisp mechanical sound of it zeroing out could be heard; she must have made a mistake midway and had to start over.
The waitress went to another table to offer the complimentary coconut drink.
It was hard to say if she was the owner’s daughter. She didn’t seem to be. Although the proprietress wasn’t young, she was in her thirties at most—the petite but fiery type of woman.
Amidst the chaos, Wei Zhen and Liu Nan came back from the restroom, playfully punching each other.
He couldn’t hear anymore…
Chen Yuan couldn’t hear anything at all. It was as if a thin film had formed between his ears and reality, blocking out all sound as the ambient noise grew more and more distant. In a short while, it was millions of light-years away.
The people around him were moving their mouths but making no sound. Or if there was sound, it was like they were speaking through a paper tube in slow motion.
A tsunami of emotions crashed through him, then receded into a calm, trickling stream, over and over again.
He couldn’t even hear his own breathing.
’The multiple personality excuse would be the perfect cover for twins. There’d be no way to tell, unless they both appeared in front of him at the same time.’
’If Jiangg Yao hadn’t been so careless, if she’d just kept quiet, he never would have figured it out.’
’If Li Bing hadn’t happened to see Jiangg Yao giving Wan the gift, if she hadn’t driven to pick up those girls that day… ’
’The intersecting timelines, the simple web of relationships… ’
’It could all be blamed on Lanjing not being that big a city, where one person could so easily run into another on the street.’
’Once he’d pulled on a single thread…’
’…he had actually been getting closer and closer to the truth.’
“Twins are so fascinating. This is the first time I’ve ever known people who look exactly alike. Is that called identical twins in medicine? I’d only ever seen it in textbooks. This is the first time in real life.”
“What twins? What are you and Li Bing talking about?”
Quan Yafeng glanced at Li Bing, then turned his gaze to Chen Yuan, forcing a bright smile as he tried to jump into the conversation.
But Chen Yuan didn’t answer.
So he reached out and poked him.
What Quan Yafeng didn’t notice was that Chen Yuan’s breathing was growing more and more rapid. After a moment…
Chen Yuan tried to use his hands to push himself up from the table. He stood up, trembling, his face frighteningly pale, as if a vampire had drained all the life out of him.
Then, his vision blurred.
THUD—
“Third Bro!? Third Bro?”
“Yuan, what’s wrong with you! What are you doing on the floor?”
“Did you hit your head? Yafeng, what are you gaping at? Help him up!”
A commotion erupted in the restaurant.
But only one thought ran through Chen Yuan’s mind: Jiangg had a sister. They were twins. And they had been taking turns dating him.
Maybe he had been played from the very beginning. Played from start to finish.
He thought he was in a pure, beautiful relationship, so full of hope for the future. But it turned out to be nothing more than a ridiculous love triangle.
It was just too absurd.
He almost wanted to laugh. He’d been deceived for so long, trusting them one hundred percent…
’And in the end, this is what it was all about.’
Dazed, Chen Yuan stared at the light on the ceiling. His vision blurred until he couldn’t see anything clearly anymore…
