Chapter 327 - 217: Li Bing Reveals the Truth, Jiangg Is a Twin, Right?
What he was saying was exactly what he’d learned from a few colleagues on the project a few days ago.
In an instant, Wei Zhen’s face was flooded with disappointment.
“Looks like I won’t be able to take that part-time job after all,” he said, his head hanging low.
“I’m planning to find another tutoring gig.”
“Tutoring pays too little.”
“I don’t have a choice. Things have come to this, so I need to plan for what’s next.”
“Then what about your family’s debt—” Wei Zhen blurted out, then realized his mistake and quickly shut his mouth. “Never mind. I guess this is the only way.”
He didn’t finish the sentence, but everyone heard it.
Chen Yuan’s heart stirred slightly. He quickly lowered his gaze and continued eating in silence.
“It’s such a shame for the manager. I heard from a coworker that she opened this cafe with her husband. After he had an accident, she worked so hard to keep it going by herself. She finally managed to realize their shared dream, only for it to last just two years… The scumbag who swooped in and signed the contract first is a real piece of work. Now I don’t know how many of the girls will have to find new jobs. Lanjing won’t have a maid cafe this good anymore,” Wei Zhen said, his voice tinged with sadness.
“I don’t see it that way,” Chen Yuan said, shaking his head unexpectedly. “Snatching up the contract first is just normal business competition. It’s a great location that everyone wants. If the manager hadn’t been trying to haggle down the price, someone else wouldn’t have snatched it away. And when a lease is up, the landlord has every right to rent the space to anyone who pays enough.”
His unfeeling remark instantly made the others turn and stare.
Even Quan Yafeng was shocked, blinking his eyes.
They had always known Chen Yuan to be a kind and bright person. Even if he thought such things, he shouldn’t say them in front of two employees from the maid cafe, right?
The main thing was, hadn’t Wei Zhen just said it was her and her husband’s dream?
“Huh? But shouldn’t compassion play a part? The landlord knew the whole story. Isn’t this the same as destroying someone’s years of hard work and effort?”
“Then why did your manager keep haggling over the price instead of renewing the contract?”
“Because it was expensive. You have to try and negotiate.”
“Fine. I guess what you’re saying… makes sense.”
Chen Yuan nodded. His behavior today was not like his usual self.
Everyone could sense that something was a little off.
It was Li Bing who, after thinking for a long moment, suddenly nodded. “What Chen said isn’t wrong, actually. It’s just a matter of different perspectives.”
As they talked, the meal came to an end, and night slowly descended upon Lanjing.
The streetlights flickered on. The day’s work was done, and office workers still bustled along the roads, but now with a bit more of a spring in their step.
Without a doubt, getting off work was much better than going to work.
Quan Yafeng went to pay the bill.
It seemed Liu Nan and Wei Zhen had also made up during the meal. Everyone’s effort to give them an easy way to reconcile hadn’t been in vain.
Only Li Bing and Chen Yuan were left at the table.
Nearby, other patrons were clinking glasses and chugging beer.
Chen Yuan was on his phone, texting Jiangg Ning to say he’d be home soon and asking if she’d eaten dinner yet.
Amidst the noise.
“Chen?”
“Hm? What’s up?”
Chen Yuan looked up, watching Li Bing with a hint of confusion.
“I have a question for you.”
“Ask away.”
“How long have you and Jiangg been dating?”
“Almost a year.”
“Is your relationship good?”
“It’s great.”
“Jiangg… has a younger sister. They’re twins, right?”
In an instant.
As Li Bing’s words fell, the dance of Chen Yuan’s fingers across his phone screen came to a halt.
He slowly raised his head and asked, his voice strained:
“What… twins… What are you talking about?”
