Logan told them the clean half.

"Paul is going to try me tonight. Not you. If you are standing next to me he gets two headlines and a hostage. You stay in this brownstone. Brandon stays with you. I go home."

Caroline said no first.

Stephanie called from a Hydra corridor and said no second.

Brandon said nothing. He just looked at Logan like a man measuring a coffin.

Logan used the rank he had paid for.

Night Watch split. One team on the brownstone. One officer in a car that would trail Logan at a distance legal enough to stay in court.

He went back to the apartment that still smelled like the life before the app. He left the lights on. He put his phone face up on the table. He turned Quiet Room off because a dead zone in a poor building looked like a man hiding a body.

At 9:17 the hallway outside his door got quiet in the wrong way. No neighbors. No television bleed.

Logan opened the shop.

[Physical Guard Charm — 6,000. Absorbs one blunt hit.]

[Adrenal Script — 1,200 coins. 90 seconds of full-body lag reduction.]

He bought the charm. Coins were low after Corridor Blind. The script would have to wait.

The knock was polite again. These men loved polite.

"Logan. General wants a ride."

"Tell the general to watch the six o’clock like everyone else."

A key scraped. Not his key. The building manager’s spare, or a copy made from it. The door came open on a chain Logan had installed after the party beating. The chain held for one breath. A shoulder hit it and the frame cracked.

Two gray shirts. The cheap suit in the rear.

Logan moved first. The upgraded body made the first man miss the grab. Logan put him into the table. The second man got a fist into Logan’s ribs that the charm ate with a sound only Logan heard, like glass under cloth.

The cheap suit raised a stun device, not a gun. Of course not a gun. Guns made paperwork. Stun made a student fall down some stairs.

Logan kicked the table into his knees and went for the door.

They expected him to fight for an apartment. He gave them the apartment. He took the stair.

Adrenal Script would have made the descent beautiful. Without it he hit the landing wrong and tasted blood. He kept going.

Night Watch’s trailing officer was already out of the car at the curb, phone up, badge out, yelling a legal word that made the gray shirts stop at the building door like dogs at the end of a yard.

They did not chase into a recorded street.

They looked at Logan with the patience of men who got paid by the night, not by the minute.

"Later," the cheap suit said, almost kindly.

Then they were gone.

Logan sat on the curb and breathed until the charm’s aftertaste left his ribs.

The officer wanted a station statement. Logan gave a short one. Attempted unlawful entry. No names he could swear to in court yet. Paul would not have sent men who carried his last name on a card.

Back upstairs the apartment was wrecked. Table gone. Chain gone. The life before the app finally looked as finished as it was.

Stephanie called.

"You are not staying there."

"I know."

"Come to Hydra. There are beds that are not brownstones and not lakes."

"If I come to you tonight I put you in the red mission. Stay on camera. Stay around people with badges that have numbers."

Caroline called next.

"Brandon wants to come get you."

"Tell Brandon if he comes here he will find a broken chain and decide I am already dead. I am not. I am moving."

"Where?"

Logan looked at the rebate balance. At Private Patron. At a city that had just learned Stephanie Hale’s voice.

"A legal address Paul does not have on a fridge list."

He packed one bag. Clothes. Charger. The phone that had become a weapon.

On the stairs he met the building manager, sweating.

"Men said they were police."

"They were not."

"I need you out. I cannot have generals in my hallway."

"You already have me out."

Logan slept three hours in a paid-by-the-week room across the river, Quiet Room cycling when he dared, Night Watch on the fire escape like an expensive ghost.

At 2:40 a.m. the system woke him with a tone he had not heard before.

[Hidden clause complete: host faced extraction alone]

[Reward: Counterweight]

[Effect: the next time a Hale man strikes first in public, the strike and its context auto-push to every counsel file already open]

[Evelyn ceasefire remaining: 41 hours]

[Friday board in: 2 days]

Logan stared at the dark ceiling.

Two days.

Enough time to finish Andrew.

Enough time to lose Brandon anyway.

His phone lit. A photo from an unknown number.

Brandon asleep on the brownstone couch.

Caroline’s hand in his hair.

Stephanie sitting in the corner of the same frame, awake, watching the window.

Someone inside that room had taken the picture.

Or someone who had already been inside it.

Logan did not call. Calling would wake the sleeping boy and tell the camera it had worked.

He sent one message to both women in a thread that had never existed before tonight.

Do not react. Do not search the room like you are scared. Who else has a key, a card, or ten minutes alone in that floor?

Stephanie answered first.

Night Watch at the stoop. Alfred’s spare card for the trust unit. I did not give it to Paul.

Caroline:

I did not take a picture of my own son sleeping. If I find a lens I will break it with my teeth.

Logan sent the photo back so they could see the angle. High corner. Near the smoke alarm.

Stephanie’s next line came slower.

There is a pinhole where the alarm meets the ceiling. I am looking at a coffee pot while I type this. I am not looking up.

Logan’s skin went cold in a clean way.

Paul had not needed to drag anyone out. He had put an eye in the first safe room money bought.

[Counterweight can wait]

[New mission: blind the brownstone without alerting the feed owner]

[Reward if unseen: Paul loses a day’s intelligence]

[Failure: Friday packet includes sleeping boy + two mothers + host’s absence]

Logan bought a second Corridor Blind even though coins were thin. He spent cash on a technician Alfred trusted, a woman who fixed executive suites and did not ask why a student was paying her bill.

She was there in forty minutes in a plumber’s shirt.

Night Watch let her in. She stood on a chair, hummed, plucked a device no bigger than a nail head from the alarm seam, dropped it into a lined pouch, and left with a nod like she had changed a washer.

The feed owner would see a wall of static, then nothing.

Logan arrived after she was gone. Brandon woke to the door and sat up with fists like he had slept inside a fight.

He saw Logan and did not swing. That was growth or exhaustion.

"You look like you got hit."

"I did. Charm took it. The door did not."

Brandon glanced at his mother, then at Stephanie in the chair. The arrangement still hurt his face.

"I watched the six o’clock," he said. "Stephanie looks like the only adult in that family. Andrew looks like a boy who calls the police on his own blood. I still do not know where that leaves you and my mom."

Caroline answered before Logan could pick the expensive lie.

"It leaves me alive. That is the only leaving I care about until Friday."

Stephanie stood, smoothed trousers that had been slept in, and became a director again.

"Friday I walk into a full board. Paul will come with moral language and a hallway still if he has one. Andrew will come with a son’s grief. I need Logan in the building as a witness, not a date. I need Caroline nowhere near that floor. I need Brandon in class looking like a student who is not a prop."

Brandon laughed under his breath.

"I can do class. I cannot do pretend I do not know."

"You can sit with what you know and not donate it," Stephanie said, softer. "That is what I have done with worse facts than yours."

Logan took the lined pouch from where the technician had left it on the fridge and held it up.

"This was in your ceiling. If any of you posted, called, or changed clothes in this room, assume a Hale saw a piece of it. From now on no safe house gets used twice."

The brownstone suddenly felt used up, like a condom on a floor.

They moved before sunrise. Different cars. Different names on different folios. Fusion window gone. Multipliers back to their split selves. The money still sat in Logan’s account like a loaded quiet.

At 9:00 Evelyn’s seventy-two hours had eleven left.

She used one of them.

A message to Logan, no greeting.

Andrew asked me to say you raped the story. I said no. He said my wrist clip will look like I asked for it if I stay quiet. I need the clip in a lawyer’s drawer, not in your pocket. Trade.

Logan stared at the words.

A trade with Evelyn Rose was how the first two years of his life had caught fire.

It was also how Friday could lose Andrew without turning Evelyn into a martyr.

He typed.

Your lawyer. Not you. One meeting. You do not get a copy that can leak on your schedule.

Evelyn:

Noon. The Rose Foundation annex. Public café. If you bring Stephanie I walk.

Logan looked at Stephanie.

Stephanie had already read it on his face.

"Go," she said. "If she is bait, you leave the second Paul walks in. If she is telling the truth, we put Andrew’s hand in a drawer that is not yours."

Caroline hated it and said so.

Brandon hated it more.

Logan went anyway, Counterweight ticking in his blood like a second pulse, the city outside the café already leaning toward Friday.
