My milf rebate system: starting with my best friends mother
Chapter 68: My son is coming home 2
Mara watched the library clip twice.
"Evelyn Rose let you keep this?"
"She walked out of the room after. That is not the same as permission. It is still her wrist."
"I can run the company angle today. I cannot run two mothers in a hotel hallway without becoming the story."
"Good," Stephanie said. "Do not run the hallway. Run the laptop and the wellness threat. I will sit on camera as a director, not a runaway wife."
They filmed in front of a bad plant and a good window. Stephanie looked like money under attack, which was the only costume that would survive Friday.
At 3:58 Paul called again. Stephanie let it ring out on the table while the camera rolled on a different take. The missed call sat there like a prop nobody had to fake.
At 4:06 Mara’s assistant came in pale.
"There are men on the street asking for Hale."
Logan went to the window first.
Paul had not come himself. He had sent the gray shirts. Two of them, plus a third in a cheap suit who had the posture of a man who used to wear a badge.
Night Watch was not on this block. Night Watch was on Caroline.
Logan activated Quiet Room anyway. The office mics would still work for Mara’s kit. Consumer phones in the hall would not.
"Back stair," Mara said. "I did not invite a kidnapping onto my floor."
They took the back stair into an alley that smelled like cardboard and heat. A car Logan had staged two streets over pulled in. Stephanie got in first. Logan was halfway in when the cheap suit rounded the corner.
"Logan. Let’s not make this athletic."
Logan got in anyway. The car moved. A hand hit the rear window and slid off.
Stephanie watched the street peel away and finally let her spine curve.
"She will run it at six," she said. "If she runs it at six, Friday’s board walks into a city that already picked a sentence."
Logan’s phone showed Caroline.
Brandon is outside. He found the brownstone. I did not tell him. Andrew must have. I have not opened the door. Quiet Room is up. He is shouting my name like I am in a fire.
Logan leaned forward to the driver.
"Turn around."
Stephanie caught his arm.
"If you go there now you give Andrew the reunion clip he wants."
"If I do not go there, Brandon breaks a door his mother is standing behind and never forgives either of us."
Stephanie held his eyes, then nodded once, a director approving a loss.
"Drop me at Hydra’s public entrance. I will be on camera on purpose. You go get your friend before he becomes Paul’s second photo."
They split in traffic like a plan that hurt.
The brownstone stoop was a scene.
Brandon with his backpack still on, voice wrecked, palms open against the door.
"Mom. I know you are in there. I am not leaving."
A neighbor had already started filming from a window across the street. Of course they had.
Logan stepped onto the sidewalk in full view because hiding now was how you looked guilty of the wrong crime.
"Brandon."
Brandon turned. The look he gave Logan was the hall look from the party, only older.
"You used my house. You used my mother. You used the one person who carried your body off a floor."
"Yes," Logan said. "And right now your mother is behind that door because Andrew sent you here to crack it. If you keep shouting, that window owns her face by dinner."
Brandon’s mouth shook.
The door opened a slit. Caroline’s hand came out, grabbed her son by the shirt, and yanked him inside with a strength that had nothing to do with romance.
Logan followed. The door slammed. Quiet Room made the neighbor’s phone a dead toy for the rest of the hour.
Inside, Brandon saw his mother’s bag. He saw two coffee cups. He saw Logan. He did not see Stephanie, and that small mercy kept him from screaming.
"Tell me the version where you are not a monster," Brandon said.
Caroline put both hands on her son’s face.
"The version is this. Paul Hale walked into our kitchen. Andrew sent you a weapon disguised as concern. Logan pulled me out of a house that was about to be used as a second crime scene. You can hate his reasons. You will not stand on a stoop and donate me to a news feed."
Brandon cried without sound. It made him look like the boy who used to finish other people’s assignments because he thought loyalty was simple.
When he could speak he looked at Logan.
"If you touch her like she is one of your missions I will ruin you in ways that do not need a general."
"Good," Logan said. "Someone in this city should still mean that."
The system, tactless as ever, dropped a line only Logan could see.
[Brandon confrontation survived]
[Caroline attraction +400 for protection of son]
[New fork: keep Brandon as ally by telling him Stephanie is the public war and Caroline is private safety]
[Lie cost: high]
[Truth cost: higher]
Logan did not pick a fork yet.
Mara Quinn’s segment went live at 6:00 on a local stream that the internet would finish.
Stephanie Hale, on camera, naming a laptop and a wellness threat.
By 6:12 Paul Hale’s name was in a thousand comments.
By 6:20 Andrew called Logan and did not speak. He only breathed, then laughed, then hung up.
By 6:31 the system issued the next mission in red.
[Assassination warning]
[Not literal. Social and physical disablement]
[Target: host]
[Window: tonight]
[Source: Paul Hale’s off-book men]
[Survive without bound targets present]
Logan read the last line twice.
Tonight he had to be alone, or the women he had bound would be standing in the blast.
