The lake hotel tried to look like peace. White stone. A lawn that ran down to water. Staff who smiled with their hands behind their backs.

Logan arrived last on purpose. He paid the driver in cash from the rebate stack and walked the long way around the building so the front cameras got a man in a jacket, not a man with two older women.

Adjoining rooms. 214 and 216. A connecting door that locked from both sides.

Stephanie had 214. She opened before he knocked, pulled him in, and slapped him.

It was not theatrical. It stung. Her eyes were bright.

"That was for the ring in a room of men," she said.

Then she kissed him like the slap had only cleared space. Logan tasted coffee and anger. He backed her to the connecting door and she let him, robe gone now, a simple dress in its place that came apart with two pulls she had planned.

"Caroline can hear if she wants," Stephanie whispered. "I am done whispering like I stole something from a boy."

He got his mouth on her throat and his hands under the dress. She was already wet, as if the night in the suite had only paused her body, not cooled it. Logan lifted her onto the writing desk, pushed her knees wide, and dropped to his knees because the last time he had rushed the ending and Paul had been twenty minutes out.

He licked her slow. Stephanie’s hand fisted in his hair. Her other hand covered her own mouth, then dropped, then covered it again when a sound got too honest. The desk knocked the wall in a rhythm the adjoining room would understand.

The connecting door stayed closed.

Stephanie came on his tongue with her heel in his shoulder and his name in a broken breath. He stood, freed himself, and pushed into her while she was still pulsing. The desk took them. She wrapped her legs around him and pulled him in like she wanted Paul erased from the inside.

Logan did not last as long as the long night in her house. This was shorter, meaner, a claim after fear. He finished in her again because she asked for it with her mouth against his ear and her nails in his back.

They stayed joined, breathing.

A knock on the connecting door. Not staff. Two knuckles.

Caroline’s voice, even.

"The hotel manager just called room 216. A man named Hale booked 218 this morning. Across the hall."

Stephanie’s body went rigid around him.

Logan pulled out, fixed her dress, fixed himself, and opened the connecting door.

Caroline stood there fully dressed, bag still packed, face unreadable except at the eyes.

"I heard enough to know you are not planning an escape," she said. "Good. Planning an escape would have been smarter. 218 is directly opposite. If Andrew is in that room he can hear a desk hit a wall."

Logan moved to the peephole of 214.

218’s door was closed. A Do Not Disturb tag hung on it. That tag had not been there when he walked the hall.

The system chimed.

[Hostile proximity: Andrew Hale confirmed by facial ping in lobby archive, 19 minutes ago]

[Paul Hale not yet on property]

[Recommendation: do not use the hall. Use staff stairs. Fusion window remaining: 4 hours 12 minutes]

Stephanie pulled her hair up like a woman going to work, not a woman who had just been taken on a desk.

"We are not running through a garden like idiots," she said. "We are checking out on paper and leaving through the kitchen because I just paid this place enough to own a kitchen door."

Caroline looked at the marks starting on Stephanie’s throat and then at Logan.

"Bind does not mean you get sloppy," she said. "My son is two hours away thinking I am safe with another woman. If Andrew films this hall, Brandon sees it before I can lie."

Logan opened the shop with his pulse in his teeth.

[Item: Corridor Blind — 2,000 coins. Hall cameras in a 20 meter radius drop frames for 8 minutes.]

[Coins available: 2,700]

He bought it.

"Eight minutes," he said. "Bags. Stairs. No talking in the hall."

They moved.

218’s door opened when they were three steps from the staff stair.

Andrew stood there in a campus hoodie, phone already up, grin already wrong.

He got a dropped-frame hall and three backs disappearing into a service door.

He still got one shot. Stephanie’s hand in Logan’s. Caroline’s bag. A time stamp.

Andrew shouted down the stairwell like a boy.

"I have you. I finally have you."

The kitchen door hit morning light. The driver Logan had kept on retain was already rolling.

They got in.

Andrew made it to the lawn in time to film a car he could not name leaving a property he had paid to stand on.

Inside the car Stephanie did not let go of Logan’s hand.

Caroline looked at their joined fingers and did not pull them apart. She looked at the road instead.

"He has a photo," she said. "Photos are not proof until a father puts a lawyer on them. Paul will put a lawyer on them."

Logan’s phone buzzed.

Andrew had sent the still to a group that included Brandon.

Brandon’s reply, visible because Andrew screenshot the chat like a trophy and forwarded it to Logan for pain, was one line.

If that is my mother I am coming to you myself.

The lake fell behind them.

The fusion window kept ticking.

And Brandon, the only decent man in Logan’s old life, was now in motion.
