Chapter 86: Threshold
Chapter 86: Chapter 86: Threshold
At the mere mention of it, Kaiden’s face instantly turned deathly pale, and he felt a strong urge to vomit.
He still remembered how, not long ago, an Earth Lizard Beast had bitten Amy in half, holding the upper part of her body in its mouth. The CRACK of her spine shattering had terrified him.
And Amy hadn’t died instantly. She had struggled frantically in the mud, crying for help, reaching out to Kaiden for aid, but in the end, she was... alive...
"What Level Professional are you? Junior?" Zelir asked, turning to glance at Kaiden.
"Apprentice Level..."
Kaiden replied in a small voice, "I’m a Warrior Apprentice."
"Were your teammates the same as you?" Zelir couldn’t help but ask.
"Yes... all Apprentice Level," Kaiden said.
Hearing this, Marcus couldn’t help but shake his head.
Apprentice Level Professionals were only slightly stronger than ordinary people. They hadn’t even figured out what the Heart of Qi was.
Forget them; even with his own team’s lineup, if Zelir and Valles were replaced by two Junior Rangers, Marcus would never have chosen the Earth Lizard Beast as a mission target.
Someone could easily get killed.
A team like Kaiden’s, with four Apprentice Level members, actually dared to Challenge an Earth Lizard Beast.
’Was it ignorance, or fearlessness?’
"It’s really strong... We should go," Kaiden’s voice was filled with terror.
"Quiet," Zelir said.
He raised the White Wax Wood in his hand, aiming directly at the Earth Lizard Beast resting in the mire.
A familiar blue light began to coalesce at the tip of the wand.
Seeing this, Marcus and Gak moved forward in perfect sync. They raised their Shields, one on the left and one on the right, forming the team’s first line of defense.
Valles also drew his bow and nocked an Arrow, channeling Fighting Qi into it as he began to charge his attack.
Once the two main damage dealers were ready, they glanced at each other and nodded.
The next second, an Arcane Missile and a Thunder Arrow shot out simultaneously!
SWISH!
BOOM!
Dazzling light illuminated the muddy pool, sweeping toward the Earth Lizard Beast.
A direct hit!
BANG...!
The violent energy kicked up waves of water, and the sound of the explosion was mixed with the Earth Lizard Beast’s pained cry!
However, the expected scene of flesh and blood flying everywhere did not occur.
Neither the Thunder Arrow nor the Arcane Missile had managed to destroy the Earth Lizard Beast’s thick hide. The defensive power of its scales, mixed with a large amount of mud and grit, was far greater than expected.
The Thunder Arrow only managed to blast a charred dent into its tough back.
The Arcane Missile’s destructive power was about the same; it only blasted a hole in the Earth Lizard Beast’s scales but failed to penetrate further and damage its flesh.
’So it can’t even be blasted open...’ Zelir narrowed his eyes slightly.
’This Earth Lizard Beast’s hide really is thick.’
’In that case, I’ll just use a different Magic!’
Zelir immediately began charging a second time.
"ROAR!!!"
The Earth Lizard Beast’s furious roar echoed. It had just enjoyed a big meal and was preparing to rest, only to be disturbed by humans.
It locked onto the direction the attack had come from, and with all four legs, it began to charge!
The Earth Lizard Beast’s stride was astonishingly fast, displaying a speed completely at odds with its size as it sent water splashing everywhere.
This scene terrified Kaiden. His face went pale, he couldn’t stop trembling, and he even had the urge to turn and run.
"It’s coming! Gak, get ready!" Marcus’s heart tightened, his muscles tensing as he prepared to grapple with the Earth Lizard Beast.
"Bring it on!" Gak roared.
Gray also tightened his grip on his sword hilt, ready to strike at the opportune moment.
Just then, Zelir strode past Marcus and Gak, taking a step forward.
"Zelir...!" Seeing this, Marcus was filled with confusion, wondering what he was trying to do.
Zelir stared at the Earth Lizard Beast as the distance between them rapidly closed.
The enraged beast couldn’t wait to tear the human to shreds and swallow him whole.
At the White Wax Wood Tip, a brilliant azure light flared up and then extended outward, forming a Water Blade as thin as a cicada’s wing!
Water of Cutting!
He swung his Magic Wand in a horizontal slash!
An extremely sharp blue light flashed past, slicing straight through the Earth Lizard Beast’s body.
Marcus hadn’t yet realized what had happened. He was just about to rush forward and protect Zelir when he noticed something was wrong with the scene before him.
An unbelievable scene unfolded.
The charging Earth Lizard Beast’s movements abruptly froze.
The Water Blade had sliced horizontally across it, with the gash of its huge, open mouth as the dividing line.
The Earth Lizard Beast’s body was cut cleanly in two. Its upper half continued to slide forward for some distance due to inertia, as thick, foul-smelling blood and internal organs gushed out.
Meanwhile, its lower half ran a few more steps due to lingering muscle reflexes before collapsing to the ground with a loud THUD.
Blood and entrails poured from the smooth cut, staining the gray-black of the marsh a grotesque blood-red.
Cut in two.
The Earth Lizard Beast was dead!
Kaiden’s eyes were wide, and he’d even forgotten to close his mouth.
His mind was a complete blank, utterly unable to comprehend the scene before him.
’The Earth Lizard Beast whose scales could withstand arrows and blades... the terrifying Demon that had left him and his teammates completely helpless... was just cut in two, killed instantly?’
Zelir, on the other hand, was in a very good mood. After finishing off the Earth Lizard Beast, he had successfully leveled up.
Level 8 (247/275) -> Level 9 (92/300), Level Up!
Zelir once again allocated the four attribute points he gained to Intelligence.
Power: 65
agility: 61
Constitution: 68
Spirit: 71
Intelligence: 90 -> 94
Perception: 30
Charm: 51 -> 52
Lucky: 41
Talent Skills:
Technique Celestial Calculation.
As his Intelligence rose again, an unprecedented sense of powerful enlightenment swept through Zelir’s entire body, exploding within his sea of consciousness.
All his accumulations up to this point had finally reached the threshold.
’The gate to becoming a Junior Mage is wide open, just waiting for me to step through!’
’But now is not the time. I have to complete the promotion in a quiet environment where no one will disturb me.’
Snapping back to his senses, Zelir suddenly realized that the atmosphere around him was a little too quiet.
He turned his head and saw his teammates staring at him as if he were some kind of monster.
"What..." Zelir felt a little creeped out by their stares.
"..."
There was a moment of silence.
Gak subconsciously touched the Broad Axe he was so proud of and began to doubt his own Power.
Valles, too, wore a complicated expression as he glanced at his Longbow Moonlight, his mind racing as he tried to figure out how he could possibly replicate the attack Zelir had just delivered.
"It’s nothing."
In the end, it was Gray who spoke up first, shaking his head. "It just strengthens my resolve to become a Mage in my next life."
Such a large, thick-skinned Earth Lizard Beast, and Zelir had killed it instantly with a single horizontal slash of his Water Blade.
’Even a Middle Level Swordsman would have a hard time achieving that kind of terrifying destructive power, right?’
’And Zelir is still just a Magic Apprentice.’
