Chapter 368: Cut the Garden from the People
The seven-site body pulled twenty-four successful stops toward its hollow center.
Tera’s school stone moved first.
Children slid across the wet roots Rilo had covered with water bags. Tera drove a pry bar into a floor joint and tied the last bag straps around it.
"Local stop remains," she reported. "School group moving east."
The future-school head lowered above them.
Its face showed Tera’s building after the roof had fallen. Names covered the inner wall, including children alive beneath it now.
Future Dena appeared in one eye. Current Dena’s market ovens burned in the other.
The head tried to close both views into one loss.
Kestrel cut the identity strip feeding that relation.
East Market’s Record section withdrew with it.
The head lost the names. The operation lost identity separation across all seven failures.
Current people now had to hold their own names by direct contact.
Tali opened seven voice channels and refused a shared roll call.
"Tera first. Only your current group."
Tera counted thirty-eight children and nine adults.
"Dena next. Only market contact."
Dena counted seventeen workers inside the oven block.
Each site spoke after the prior count ended. No missing name moved into another list.
The route body dragged Ridge asphalt through Tera’s roots.
Caleb could stop the road or lift the school stone. His external frame had one serviceable hip rail and no left correction.
Sela printed both offers on separate sheets.
Caleb read them while the foundry chain hung loose.
"Road compression accepted," he said.
He returned the school offer unsigned.
Tera saw the refusal arrive on her local printer.
She did not ask for his reason while children were moving.
"East wall crew, we carry our stone," she said.
Nine adults lifted with pry bars. The stone moved less than a hand. It was enough for Rilo to pull two children out from under its edge.
At Ridge, Caleb compressed the asphalt leg against a scrap pit.
His smaller body bent inside the frame. The flattened chest plate folded farther. Silver leaked through the three hip holes and hardened on the external rail without becoming a replacement joint.
The road stopped before the inhabited rail line.
Caleb could not reach Tera while holding it.
The seven-site body opened its Cairo hand.
Archive object lines crossed its palm. Mara’s box remained in evidence custody, but the hand found three cultivation plans stored on shelves before her confession.
It pulled the plans through the origin field.
Black troughs rose at Hesh, Twelve Wells, and Tera.
Household pipes answered them.
Meva called every affected keeper.
"Find your clay collar. State what lives through it."
Hesh households named heat and roof drainage.
Twelve Wells named surgical wash, two breathing wards, and an empty recoil chamber.
Tera named treatment steam, school water already lost, and three kitchen lines.
The 412 wall seats demanded every trough be burned.
"Burn command culture," Meva replied. "Leave our hands on our pipes."
The wall vote had no authority over her roof. Their fire crews offered heat only where local keepers marked a command relation free of residents.
At Hesh, 702 people remained above the culture trough.
The Woman opened a corridor from the roof stair to Eda Ro’s vehicle route.
Hesh’s holder accepted people only. Eda accepted people into seventeen current buses and excluded culture material.
The first forty residents crossed.
The body pushed a root through the corridor behind them.
The Woman closed her end before it reached the buses.
Her current host collapsed inside the shelter. Thirty-nine people held the host upright while blood entered one eye.
"Corridor withdrawn," the Woman said. "Forty completed."
Hesh still held 662 people.
No second corridor inherited the route.
At Far Anchor, Davi Sen kept Return Thirteen for his lung mask. Return Twenty-Nine kept six treatment beds breathing.
The commandless body used both retained lines as roots.
Meva offered separation at the household collars without asking either keeper to surrender treatment.
"We cut the garden side," she said. "You keep maintenance under your hand."
The old clay collars had two lips. Generations of workers had used one for cleaning. Mara’s plan had ignored it because Post Eight’s first test came from the roof.
Davi opened the cleaning lip.
Black fluid spilled into his room.
Beni caught it in kiln bowls and carried each bowl to an empty culture stop. The fluid tried to root through his gloves.
Davi kept breathing while the command return drained away.
At Twenty-Nine, six bed keepers opened their lips one at a time. Each patient confirmed air before the next bowl moved.
The retained returns separated without reversing their earlier refusals.
The route body lost Far Anchor’s culture spine.
It bent across the remaining six sites and drove its origin-field foot into Tera.
Elara saw the field structure turn toward Caleb’s loaded press.
Her opaque room showed no image of him. Pressure still reached his silver before her spoken direction ended.
The foundry chain consumed twenty-two centimeters of slack.
Eight remained.
Elara revoked the field support.
Sela’s printer started the page.
The route body tore through the last eight centimeters before the revocation printed.
Caleb’s right hand moved inside the press.
The independent brace keeper dropped the hip cradle.
Caleb fell out of load. Ridge asphalt broke free and hit the inhabited rail line.
An empty freight carriage took the first impact. The second overturned a worker shelter before its late hand-radio warning reached the gate.
Three workers remained inside.
Ridge crews pulled one out alive. Two had no pulse under current contact.
Elara’s revocation kept the route body from using Caleb’s full retained mass as a bridge into Tera.
It did not preserve the rail shelter.
Tali entered both deaths before anyone called the brace release correct.
Caleb lay beside the foundry frame. His open hip holes no longer hardened at their edges.
"No more force through this rail," he said.
Sela disconnected it.
Tera’s adults carried the school stone without him.
At six sites, households opened cleaning lips, isolated water, moved treatment air to hand bellows, and cut command roots from inhabited pipes.
Some relations would not separate cleanly.
Dena lost two market ovens and the wall heating seven rooms.
Hesh lost roof drainage above sixty-one occupied beds.
Twelve Wells closed one surgical wash route and moved nine patients by hand.
Tera’s grandmother lost her treatment steam after already losing heat.
Rilo reached her house with a charcoal stove while the school group held its own stone.
The old woman accepted smoke and uneven heat rather than reopening the culture line.
The Woman used two local corridors for bounded rescues. One moved twenty-one Hesh bed patients downstairs. Another moved four Twelve Wells patients across a severed wash hall.
Both holders closed their routes after the named people crossed.
Her shelter inherited nothing.
The body had lost culture supply but retained physical limbs from road, tray, roots, and future pressure.
Thirty local keepers marked separation complete.
The origin field still had no resident keeper.
Soma carried an ordinary copper pair to its edge.
He did not claim the empty place.
He drove one stake into current stone and offered the other end to the far trench visible through the body’s hollow chest.
The pale-armored worker who had broken Mara’s drain tooth appeared there.
She looked at the copper.
Soma placed a cutting tool beside his stake.
The worker understood enough to place her own tool against the far relation.
They cut from both sides.
The hollow center opened.
Local force entered only the parts each keeper had separated from current people.
Wall fire burned empty troughs. Ridge dropped road into its scrap pit. Cairo collapsed tray metal inside an objectless vault. Tera broke dead roots under named household releases.
The seven-site body came apart without carrying one current population into another.
Black Grass stopped at the Array edges.
Every cut surface remained warm and needed a hand on it.
