Chapter 356: Shelter Fires
Twelve Wells fired while the Woman’s corridor carried thirteen patients out of surgery.
Nala Porr turned the charge key.
Esi Koro held the water key through ignition.
Juno Vey kept the recoil stop engaged.
The local Array ring dropped one meter into South Cistern and sent a white route toward the origin field.
Twenty-three responding Arrays refused shared aim.
Ridge released two western bolts. Cairo closed its rear sight shutters. The island site cut its southern charge rail under two neighborhood witnesses. Night Ground rang eight local stops without joining their clocks.
The shot lost four bearings before leaving Twelve Wells.
Shared recoil came back through Juno’s stop.
South Cistern’s outer wall moved across 4,806 current residents. Apartment floors tilted toward the Array ring. A school roof opened beneath the water-key gallery.
Juno held the stop while local crews released three wall blocks.
The fourth block fused to her control platform.
Nala pulled her charge key after ignition. The key came out. The white route continued on stored pressure.
Esi released the well grid. Wells One through Eleven separated from the shot. Well Twelve stayed attached because its water already occupied the recoil channel.
Juno could drop the stop and send stored charge into Well Twelve.
Clay Row and Old Market still drank from it.
She kept the stop.
The fused wall block crossed her platform at waist height.
Juno released two recoil pins before it reached her. The third remained under her hand.
"South Cistern stop remains held," she told the local witness.
The wall drove her into the Array ring.
Juno Vey died with the third pin released halfway.
Her incomplete release cut one more bearing from the shot.
The white route split.
One section struck the target field near Tera’s lost service lane. Another opened through Ridge’s one-ended road. A third entered Cairo’s old cultivation tray. The remaining force crossed routes no current site could see.
At Wellside Hospital, treatment water returned to local bags.
Black blades withdrew from three surgical rooms and emerged inside the private corridor frame. The Woman’s holder field took the strike. A black cut widened across its center.
The thirteen patients in transit reached the private receiving room.
The next cycle failed to open.
Hospital crews moved remaining patients toward roof baskets and local stair lines. The corridor had saved 587 current people before the shot. It could save no more while the holder field carried the cut.
Two surgical rooms lost floor relation during transfer.
Surgeon Bera Noll held one patient against a wall rail while the room opened onto Well Three. The rail stayed at the hospital. Her lower body crossed with the floor.
The patient reached the hall under two local hand lines.
Bera Noll died before crews could restore the room.
In Old Market, Well Nine closed beneath an occupied stair. Twelve people disappeared from current view between two steps.
The final camera named six people: Mikel Taro, Yara Rinn, Odo Ire, Kiva Ko, Luka Dour, and Leni Darr.
Six more remained unidentified under the available record. Tali kept them as six current people, names pending, missing after verified stair contact.
The wall seat completed permanent closure around four districts.
It protected 21,604 current residents inside stable routes.
Clay Row’s open blocks and Old Market’s unclosed streets remained exposed. The 4,812 external-load estimate broke into current rescues, injuries, named deaths, missing people, and unreachable routes.
No zero-death line survived.
Tali’s preliminary city record held Juno Vey and Bera Noll as confirmed dead. Twelve people remained missing from the Old Market stair. Two hundred fourteen current injuries had reached local treatment, with other districts still reporting.
Two more city routes remained occupied and uncounted.
The private corridor had moved 587 people. Permanent closure held 21,604 inside stable routes. Those figures described different groups and could not be subtracted into one clean survival total while occupied routes remained unverified.
The incomplete shot reached the origin field as five separate impacts.
Tera saw Twelve Wells’ white route rise from the soil between her and Dena Morr.
The lost service lane returned as a hospital corridor.
Dena stood at one end in the stone market. Rilo stood at the other beside the school pump frame. Between them, Wellside lift doors opened onto a cultivation roof built during the first laboratory period.
People occupied all three times.
Two laboratory workers saw Tera through the tray-roof window. Their clock showed a year before the city shields closed. One held a bucket of route culture. The other had a worker number that matched Mara’s exposure ledger.
Tera addressed them as current contacts and no ancestors.
"Put the bucket down. Do not pour into the white line."
The younger worker dropped it.
Black blades left the bucket and ran toward Twelve Wells.
Current target growth moved the opposite direction along the same route.
Mara’s ledger identified the workers by shift numbers 8-FAR-21 and 8-FAR-22. Tera asked each for a current name.
The older worker answered Meva Tal. The younger answered Beni Ora. Both remained inside their laboratory shift and wanted the culture line closed.
Suri pulled the tray drain. Beni cut the bucket handle relation with a wire shear. The action burned his forearm and slowed the blades entering Twelve Wells without stopping current growth from the city side.
Their local cut became a third release on the laboratory roof. It still could not close Dena’s market or Rilo’s school route for them.
Dena and Rilo held separate service-lane releases. They could close market and school ends. The laboratory roof held no reachable third release.
They kept both ends open long enough to move forty-three market workers away from impact soil.
Nemi used both palms to turn Pump Nineteen’s current cut wheel. Abeni Kalu held Kiln Steps’ far water line with one clay frame.
Hesh Roof separated its remaining tank from the white route. Seven hundred two residents retained roof ground.
North Pump’s 494 rescued people stayed in current rooms beyond the broken shared root. None returned to the consumed wells.
Hesh’s 202 scoped arrivals stayed in their receiving courts.
The thirty-nine people under the Woman’s direct shelter remained rescued while her holder field absorbed the hospital strike.
Completed rescues stayed completed.
At the target impact, three field houses disappeared under Twelve Wells masonry. Two residents reached Tera’s school frame. One body remained beneath a wall bearing the city charter.
His name was Laro Ven.
Tera entered Laro’s current death beside Juno Vey and Bera Noll. One route had killed people on both ends.
The white impact pushed Black Grass away from Twelve Wells’ eleven separated wells. Well Three reopened to local buckets. Well Seven stopped producing blades.
The shot saved water routes for thousands.
It also joined the Array city to the people downrange.
Soma kept every local clock. The laboratory workers remained before shield closure. Tera remained current after the island test. Twelve Wells remained inside its firing minute.
No clock overruled another body.
Nala asked whether Juno could return through the laboratory roof.
Tali answered with the current record.
Juno died under witnessed recoil. No alternate route changed that death.
The same limit held for Bera Noll and Laro Ven.
The Twelve Wells shot ended after forty-one seconds by local Array time.
Its route did not close.
Thirty-one sites now had physical access to pieces of the origin field through split bearings. Some opened onto current settlements. Some reached cultivation ruins. Ridge’s branch still carried a section of the one-ended road. Cairo’s branch carried Mara’s sample relation.
The five main impacts had branched through refused bearings and left one local aperture at every Array.
Each site retained a local cut.
No site held every cut.
Black Grass began growing from Twelve Wells toward Tera’s school.
Cultivation blades began growing from the old tray roof toward Twelve Wells.
The open route carried both directions at once.
