Rilo Morr’s scream came through the wall beside Elara’s bed.

"Cistern floor is opening! Tera is under it!"

Caleb’s silver line held a hole the width of two fingers. Through it, black water poured upward around the school cistern. Tera Vos hung from the repaired fourth valve with one burned hand.

Nemi’s bandaged hand could not close around the pump shear.

Twenty-three school children crowded on a roof ledge above them. Their ladder ended inside the cistern.

Caleb and Elara were still naked when the bearing opened.

Elara pulled the caregiver call.

"Kikaru, field contact in this room. Bring the privacy cover and a mechanical cut for the west wall."

Caleb released the thin silver line from his chest. Its far end stayed through the wall, held by the learned bearing rather than his current touch.

He dressed while keeping his body away from it. Elara closed her gown with her left hand and asked for help with the upper fastener only after the shoulder strap held.

Kikaru entered with a folding screen. She saw the field opening, checked Elara’s breathing line, and placed the screen between the bed and exterior corridor.

Private contact ended before field work began.

No camera entered the room until Elara approved a view aimed only at the wall.

Tera’s cistern floor dropped another centimeter.

The children had one local roof line. It could reach Nemi’s pump frame and no ground beyond it. Black blades were consuming the frame bolts.

Caleb could send human-scale compression through the bearing. His current body had no long-span memory and no removable plate. Any silver crossing might join him to Tera’s school.

The learned response could aim force faster.

"Do not use what happened between us as permission," Elara said.

"I am asking now," Caleb replied. "One right-hand column under the west cistern lip. Three seconds. Tera accepts local weight. Kikaru cuts the Mercy bearing if I move beyond the column."

Tera heard the request through the hole.

"I accept west-lip vertical support for three current bell strikes. No school destination."

Nemi took the bell rope between both palms and wrapped it around her wrists without using the missing fingertips.

Kikaru fitted an insulated shear around the thin silver line at the Mercy wall. A second Mercy keeper held the wall route release from the exterior corridor.

Elara checked the support drawing.

"Current pain four. Breath supported. I choose one bounded direction."

Caleb put his right hand flat on the Mercy floor.

"Give it."

Elara looked through the field opening.

"Right-hand compression beneath Tera’s west cistern lip. Straight up. Stop at her third bell."

Silver left Caleb before he said accepted.

The line crossed the wall and became a column under Tera’s current stone. It hit six centimeters left of the requested point, corrected toward Elara’s sight, and lifted the falling floor.

Caleb recognized the movement after the load reached his shoulder.

"Accepted current column," he said.

His words followed his body.

The support still saved Tera.

Rilo crawled onto the held floor and pulled her away from the fourth valve. Nemi rang once.

Roof keepers moved eight children across the pump frame.

The ninth child had one ankle trapped under a roof tile. His teacher could free the foot by lifting the tile or hold the south frame while the next group crossed.

Rilo took the frame line under the teacher’s current request. Tera lifted the tile with both forearms, keeping her burned hands clear of its edge.

The child reached the frame with a crushed boot and current sensation in all toes.

Black blades reached the silver column and turned toward Mercy.

Caleb held vertical compression only. He refused every horizontal pull as it arrived.

Nemi rang twice.

Ten more children crossed. The pump frame lost its north bolt. A roof keeper dropped that section under local release and kept the south half.

Five children remained.

Tera took the bell rope from Nemi.

She waited.

The three-second request had already passed by Mercy time. Target-field bells did not share it. The accepted stop belonged to Tera’s third strike.

The last child left the roof ledge.

Tera rang three.

Caleb released the column.

His silver remained beneath the cistern for half a second, still following Elara’s wanted direction.

"No," he said.

The column withdrew.

Kikaru cut the Mercy bearing. The exterior keeper released the wall route.

The cistern floor fell into black water after Tera and the children reached the pump frame.

All twenty-three children, Tera, Nemi, and Rilo remained current. Tera’s school lost the cistern and its repaired fourth valve. They had less than forty minutes of stored water.

The injured child chose treatment on the school side. The other children split among three current roof groups rather than following one evacuation label. Tera assigned no replacement cistern route while black water occupied the old floor.

North Pump offered six sealed water bags through its current public court. The Woman’s direct shelter offered clean water in private rooms. Tera accepted the object bags and kept the body door unsigned.

The rescue worked because Elara’s pressure reached Caleb before his conscious acceptance.

It also exceeded the requested point by six centimeters and held after the third bell until he refused.

Rina kept both results under a field-only recording. The private room remained outside the evidence view.

Kestrel compared local clocks. Caleb’s silver moved eighteen hundredths of a second before Elara finished the bounded direction. Kikaru’s shear reached the line six tenths after movement. Human interruption could stop expansion and could not prevent the first response.

Caleb’s prior request had approved one column at Tera’s west lip. It had not approved the six-centimeter correction or the late half second.

Elara entered her own wanted direction as the source of aim and no command authority.

"Joint deployment suspended," Elara said.

"Agreed," Caleb answered.

"Every future direction requires an interruption that lands before your silver, not after. We do not have one."

Kikaru bagged one breath after Elara requested support. Caleb stayed beyond the frame rail until Elara reached for his hand.

She held it for one current breath and released.

The field problem remained separate from their private answer.

Kestrel received Twelve Wells Array during the cistern casualty count.

The city stood around twelve deep wells and one firing ring. Its wall seat held water routes through a current population of 36,112.

Wellside Hospital served five outer districts. Clay Row fired pump tile and stored three weeks of grain. South Cistern housed Array workers and families behind an old recoil wall. The central market crossed four well routes every hour.

Local controller Nala Porr held charge access with two elected water keepers. The wall seat held emergency closure over every well and no direct firing key.

Black Grass entered Well Three.

Its water stayed clean. The well’s buckets began returning to occupied kitchens from other districts. Each bucket carried a blade under its handle.

The wall seat closed Well Three.

Blades appeared in Well Seven.

Local crews released Seven’s pump relation. Black Grass entered the hospital lift carrying its maintenance crew.

The crew cut lift and treatment routes apart. Four workers reached a stair. One remained visible inside the lift car, unable to reach either floor.

The wall seat closed the car around him and preserved his current body as a hospital asset.

He shouted a refusal through the inspection speaker.

The seat recorded it and kept the car sealed.

Occupied routes began failing faster than local crews could name them.

Nineteen failed in forty-two seconds.

Three clinic rooms opened onto Clay Row’s kiln floor. A market stair returned people to the step they had left. South Cistern’s outer door reached Wellside Hospital and carried black water into treatment storage.

Local keepers cut seven routes. The seat closed nine. Three remained occupied and unstable.

Twelve Wells requested a clearing shot from the thirty-one Arrays.

Other sites had not answered when its wall seat opened local charge rails.
