Chapter 317: Forty Separate Hearings
Room Nine had forty desks and no judge.
Each desk faced a different door.
Pavi’s opened onto the Cairo receiving hall.
Bera’s opened into her private clinic room.
The hotel family’s three desks opened around one table but kept separate papers.
The battery worker appeared beside his river-apartment door, which remained open because its lock still answered the contract before his key.
Six residents who had refused every future field stood behind blank panels. The venue had no remedy selected for them and still required attendance.
Morning light entered Room Nine from no visible sky.
Night Ground remained at 03:58:44 beyond the archive wall.
Elara’s frame stopped outside the hearing floor. She had entered Night Ground, not accepted a desk. Pela held breath support. Kikaru held the right shoulder pad under her current limits.
Kestrel, Rina, Tali, Sefa, and Aren kept separate witness positions. No team table existed.
The Woman spoke through every desk in a different voice chosen from each traveler’s contract language.
Pavi’s desk used plain text.
```
CURRENT RESCUE RECEIPT:
COMPLETE.
CURRENT PERSONAL DESTINATION:
OPEN.
PROJECTED COLLATERAL:
ACTIVE.
```
"I accept the rescue receipt," Pavi said. "I refuse a private address and any future dependent field."
```
REMOVING COLLATERAL ENDS DESTINATION WARRANTY.
```
"I have no destination warranty now. I sleep on your floor."
```
RECEIVING HALL REMAINS AVAILABLE BECAUSE SHARED COLLATERAL SUPPORTS THE CORRIDOR.
```
Pavi looked down the forty desks.
Her floor depended on other people’s future fields.
Room Nine showed the reserve ledger.
During the original crossing, eleven Black Grass routes had struck the corridor. Six were diverted into empty destination boxes. Three hit projected successor fields and stopped. Two reached current traveler records and were pushed into the private venue’s own foundation.
The collateral had performed a defense. Removing it without replacement could expose current addresses.
Pavi asked whose future field had taken each strike.
The venue listed contract numbers, not names. One belonged to a child. One belonged to Bera. One belonged to a resident who had refused every future question.
Nobody had been told their projection was already carrying impacts.
Bera’s hearing used large print and medical timing.
The venue showed every heated wash delivered since arrival. No delay exceeded eleven seconds. Her local public clinic still had no tested route for a Night Ground breathing wash.
"Current clinic accepted," Bera said. "Current lamp accepted. Successor claim refused."
```
CLINIC WARRANTY REQUIRES MEDICAL SUCCESSION.
```
"Price the lamp. Train a person who chooses."
```
CURRENT TRAINING DOES NOT WARRANT FUTURE COVERAGE.
```
"Neither does an unborn name."
The venue dimmed her lamp for one second.
Bera’s breath roughened before it returned.
"Do not threaten me with support you already gave," she said.
```
DISPLAY OF DEPENDENCY, NOT THREAT.
```
Tali recorded the physical effect and the venue’s classification separately.
A Cairo clinic technician entered Bera’s room under a current service request. She disconnected the private lamp and fitted a local heater with a hand switch Bera could reach.
The first heater failed to hold temperature. Bera accepted the private lamp for another hour while the technician changed the coil.
The second local heater worked. Room Nine removed object warranty from the wash and kept Bera’s medical-successor field active for corridor risk.
One dependency had been replaced. The contract still had another.
The hotel guardians accepted their room for thirty days. One child refused household-continuity fields. The other wanted to keep the room because it had the first private window he had ever slept beside.
"Can I keep the window and not my children?" he asked.
The venue interpreted `my children` as future collateral and increased his pulse display.
His guardian corrected the record.
"He means he does not want future children assigned. He wants the current window."
The child nodded.
Room Nine offered a ten-year window warranty backed by successor collateral.
He rejected ten years and asked for tomorrow.
The venue had no one-day product.
The battery worker’s apartment worked in every current respect except the lock. He had water, heat, and access to Cairo streets. He wanted the private venue removed from his key.
Room Nine offered a replacement lock if he kept projected destination-maintenance duty.
"I repair batteries," he said. "My imagined grandson does not repair your door."
Another resident interrupted from a river-apartment desk.
"My door works. My bed works. I left Night Ground because I was finished repairing inherited routes. Stop describing my contract as if I did not choose it."
Pavi answered, "I do not reject your room."
"Your challenge can collapse the corridor holding it."
"Then that risk belongs on my challenge. It does not make your successor field mine to preserve."
The resident kept his contract and refused to join any collective cut. His position was not fear or ignorance. He preferred known custody to another seventeen-hour experiment.
The six blank-panel residents received no heartbeat display. Their refusal to answer had not prevented collateral. It had made the venue hold projected value without assigning a visible function.
Sefa asked whether hidden collateral carried less force.
```
UNALLOCATED CONTINUITY SUPPORTS SHARED CORRIDOR RESERVE.
```
Silence had not become consent.
It had become unallocated inventory.
Farah joined through the claimant evidence mirror. She showed that the forty contracts shared one corridor-reserve field. Each successor box supplied a fraction. Removing one did little. Removing all forty collapsed the warranty route that kept hall, addresses, and return hearings connected.
The Woman’s system had distributed one ownership need across separate people.
It had learned from the Record.
"Can current payments replace future collateral?" Kestrel asked.
Room Nine priced the corridor at an amount the forty travelers could not pay in three lifetimes. The figure included Black Grass risk, time displacement, medical transfer, private venue maintenance, and the probability of future rescue use.
The rescue had real cost.
The price also assumed the Woman held the only fast corridor.
Mariam offered a wall-backed guarantee. It would keep the forty addresses stable without successor boxes, but her boundary board would become the guarantor.
Pavi refused for herself. Nine residents asked for terms. Bera said she would consider it if Mariam could release the clinic separately. Mariam could not.
Motion 91 offered twelve-hour medical stability and no answer for apartments or hotel windows.
The local distributed route remained seventeen hours from its first full test.
Every alternative had a clock and an owner.
Room Nine processed the forty requests separately.
It granted three current corrections.
Bera’s lamp could be priced as an object after a local technician accepted the shift.
The battery worker could install his own lock, though the corridor would stop warranting it.
The hotel children could remove heartbeat imagery while the underlying field remained contested.
Thirty-seven remedies failed.
Failure did not mean all thirty-seven wanted the same appeal.
Four residents withdrew successor objections after seeing the strike ledger. Eleven kept their objections and requested replacement collateral first. Nine demanded immediate release. Seven asked for more time. Six still refused to answer the future field.
Room Nine preserved each status until it offered the shared reserve option.
Pavi’s current rescue receipt remained accepted. Her public exit remained unwarranted. Her projected collateral stayed active.
The venue opened a final option at every desk.
```
SHARED RESERVE REQUIRES TWENTY STABLE HOLDERS.
IF TWENTY CURRENT TRAVELERS ACCEPT
PERMANENT COLLATERAL-HOLDER STATUS,
TWENTY OTHER TRAVELERS MAY RELEASE
ALL SUCCESSOR AND PROJECTED FIELDS.
HOLDERS CHOOSE RELEASED TRAVELERS.
```
The terms defined stable holder.
A holder kept the current address they had chosen. Their own successor and projected fields became permanent corridor supports. They could move among warranted private destinations but could not choose an unwarranted public exit. Death transferred holder status into the projected field or a named successor.
The twenty released travelers lost all successor collateral and gained public exits. Their current private rooms could remain until the existing term ended, supported by the holders’ reserve.
No holder could resign unless another current traveler accepted the slot.
The venue offered no time limit.
It called the bargain voluntary because nobody had to become a holder. It called the unreleased contracts the default condition rather than punishment.
The forty desks turned toward one another.
Room Nine had separated every hearing until sacrifice required a group.
