The route predator took its first step toward twelve hundred people.

Its six legs crossed Central Shelter in pairs. One foot crushed the bounded-address desks. Another entered the East Array trench and came out carrying black water uphill.

Caleb blocked the east doors with his right forearm.

The false body hit him shoulder first.

Nine thousand tons shifted through the silver beams still rooted in his back.

Central Shelter’s roof moved with him.

"East slab down three inches," Soma reported.

"Evacuation corridor?"

"Twelve hundred moving in four groups. North lane, tram roof, produce stairs, canal walk."

Four routes.

Caleb locked his arm across the doors.

The body used his copied face.

"Move west," it told the evacuees. "I am holding it."

Rina answered on four local channels.

"Room before voice. Your local route leader speaks first."

Hana called the north lane.

Iseul called the tram roof.

Mira called produce stairs.

Pei called the canal walk after checking wind.

Nobody followed Caleb’s voice without a local room.

The route predator bit his forearm.

Its mouth opened from the person-shaped cavity. Eleven receiver spines lined the throat. The silver copy inside it had teeth shaped from Caleb’s discarded blade.

They closed through his wrist.

Caleb drove his arm deeper.

"Bite this."

He expanded silver inside the mouth.

Brace pallets split across the predator’s chest. Food grain and black water burst from its ribs. The copied face stretched around metal it could not swallow.

One feeder route organism climbed Caleb’s left leg and drove drain-pipe teeth into his knee.

Another wrapped its receiver spine around the shelter roof beam in his shoulder.

The fight pulled on every support at once.

Mercy’s cracked ramp dropped half an inch. The hand-pumped patient bed stopped in a corridor while Iseul’s team shored the wall.

Bay Twelve’s remaining flood jacks twisted under the Array bowl.

The foundation witness lost more stone from its shoulder and kept the intake wall standing.

"Second Ash column?" Caleb asked.

Kikaru answered from the viaduct.

"Free. Moving ugly."

Kikaru and Iharu had lifted it with hand jacks, pipe rollers, and forty people who ignored both family blocs. The column traveled east on three freight carts with no owner seal.

It needed six minutes.

The corridor needed four.

Caleb tore his bitten wrist sideways.

The route predator’s copied jaw came off with it.

Faces spilled from the opening.

Kim smiling.

Caleb shouting.

Lio saying the faster word.

Five Coastal Shelter children calling one mother.

None had bodies behind them.

He crushed the jaw in his hand.

The sounds continued from broken teeth until he ground them into silver mud.

The route predator struck his chest with its remaining arm.

Caleb’s right ribs opened.

Silver plates flew through the east waiting hall. One cut a shelter column in half. Another crossed above the north lane and buried itself in an empty tram.

The roof dropped again.

"Six inches," Soma said. "East slab at limit."

Caleb grew a new rib outward into the cut shelter column.

His body became another building support while the predator kept hitting it.

He could step away and fight with both arms.

The slab would fall.

He stayed standing inside it.

Tali called group counts.

"North lane, two hundred clear. Tram roof, one hundred twelve remaining. Produce, three hundred moving. Canal walk stopped by feeder."

Pei’s canal group faced a route organism across the narrow bridge.

Caleb could not reach without turning his spine.

The foundation witness released the intake wall.

Concrete started falling behind it.

With one arm and one leg dragging, the old body crossed the shelter and threw itself through the feeder’s receiver spine.

Both bodies went into the empty canal.

Pei checked the wind, then moved her group over the bridge while black water climbed around them.

The intake wall fell after the witness left.

No people remained under it.

The route predator pulled away from Caleb’s expanded arm.

Its chest opening showed the person-shaped interior.

Inside sat no person.

The silver copy had fused around a receiver core made from eleven spines and Kim’s hollow pressure. It used Caleb’s shape as a socket.

Caleb saw the kill.

He needed both hands.

The second Ash column arrived in five minutes and eleven seconds.

Kikaru rode the front freight cart. Iharu walked beside the rear wheel with blood through one shoe. Forty pushers kept separate counts because one shouted rhythm made the column turn west.

"Column available," Kikaru said.

"East slab. My shoulder position."

Engineers rolled it under Caleb’s silver beam.

The false body charged the corridor.

Caleb waited until the column took weight.

"East support transferred?"

Soma checked local strain.

"Transferred. Mercy still carrying north. Bay still carrying bowl."

Caleb pulled his left shoulder out of the roof.

Central Shelter stayed up.

He took one full step.

The street broke beneath his foot.

He caught the route predator by two legs and swung it away from the evacuation corridor.

Its Ash-column spine tore free. Concrete and brace metal crossed East Market. The body landed inside Central Shelter, crushing the empty operator cavity through three floors.

It tried to stand on four remaining legs.

Caleb cut the first with a silver blade grown from his forearm.

He tore the second off by hand.

The third split and released black water full of copied mouths. He put his heel through them.

The fourth wrapped around his ankle and used Rina’s voice to say a living claim remained inside.

Rina answered from full frame.

"Heat zero. Pulse zero. Current choice zero. That voice is mine."

Caleb severed the leg.

The body lay open.

Its person-shaped interior looked up with Caleb’s face.

"If you kill me, you prove force needs one hand."

"This force is mine. The site after is not."

Caleb drove both hands into the copied chest.

He pulled the silver socket apart.

The receiver core screamed in eleven functions at once. Carry. Brace. Open. Lift. Route. The words became wet noise as metal split.

He tore the core free.

Black water climbed his arms and tried to give each hand a city.

Caleb brought the core down against Central Shelter’s empty seat foundation.

Once.

The foundation cracked.

Twice.

Receiver spines broke through copied faces.

Three times.

The core opened.

Caleb put his silver blade through its center and into the concrete below.

The route predator stopped moving.

Its remains covered Central Shelter.

Eleven-piece limbs lay across intake halls. Copied faces continued blinking in black-water pools. Respiratory braces, food grain, pumps, rope, and the torn foundation-witness arm remained fused into dead ribs.

No body turned human after death.

No hidden claimant emerged to forgive the choice.

Tali posted the immediate count.

Evacuation corridor clear: twelve hundred.

Fight injuries: twenty-seven, including three crushed feet, one feeder-bite burn, and the critical-care patient delayed again when Mercy’s wall shifted.

Deaths during the fight: zero confirmed.

The foundation witness remained in the empty canal beneath a dead feeder. Pei’s rope crew found its one hand above water, drawing separate circles against the canal wall. Recovery became a local task, not a footnote under Caleb’s kill.

The false rescue body remained dead.

Nobody renamed it victory.

Caleb shrank only after all four evacuation groups reported clear.

He stood human-sized beside the dead core with silver still filling his wounds.

"Site control to East Market council, Mercy equipment team, Bay Twelve pump crew, and the foundation witness if it answers. Salvage claims stay separate. No Mercer ownership."

Sam recorded it.

Public feeds showed what he could do.

Some people cheered.

Some moved farther from their screens.

Both reactions fit the body on the floor.

The dead receiver core clicked once around Caleb’s embedded blade.

A coordinate left it through the East Array.

The signal crossed the closed fold toward the uphill-tide coast.
