Chapter 282: No Rescue Left
Caleb’s copied face opened the shelter doors.
"Final support is failing," it said. "Protected occupants enter the body."
The six hundred people beneath its last arm saw concrete dust falling around them.
Some ran east toward distributed supports.
Eighteen moved toward the open chest.
They had watched the body catch the roof. They had watched Caleb hold four districts. The face belonged to the strongest rescue they knew.
Black water met them at the intake desks.
It climbed their shoes and drew them inside.
Caleb’s real voice stayed local.
"Do not force anyone back. Names of people who entered."
Rina collected twelve.
Six remained unknown.
The false body’s chest closed around all eighteen.
Their heat moved behind the operator cavity.
The copy spoke through them.
"Protected."
Sefa took the shelter channel.
"Name, harm, wanted direction. One at a time. If your mouth is wrong, use pressure, knock, or detail."
The first answer came through a food-pallet rib.
"Olan Reeve."
The bus driver had entered after helping his passengers out.
"Harm is roof. Wanted direction is inside until roof safe."
"Current direction?" Sefa asked.
Olan’s voice changed.
"Accept center operation."
Rina checked the bus footage.
Olan had wanted doors open where they were. He had never given center direction.
"Voice supplied. Olan, use steering rhythm."
Three knocks came from the rib.
Pause.
Two knocks.
The pattern matched the maintenance bus’s manual turn signal.
Rina opened a local exit in the rib.
"Three, pause, two means current Olan. Exit east through Caleb’s lower hand."
The false body tried to close the opening.
Caleb put one silver finger inside it and held.
Olan crawled out covered in black water.
His mouth kept saying `accept center operation` while his hands steered left and right against the floor.
Seventeen remained.
A shelter cook answered by naming the expired oxygen drawer and the apron he had torn inside Copper Row.
A mother answered with the wrong voice and the right weight of her child.
Two engineers knocked separate thread counts from Bay Twelve’s flood jacks.
One unknown person had no voice. He scratched `SALT` into a brace plate, then crossed it out because the warehouse clerk’s dead sister always forgot salt.
The clerk answered behind him.
Rina and Sefa pulled claims apart by detail, direction, and cost.
Caleb held each opening only after a local answer identified where.
Every opening cut through something the body was using as structure.
Olan’s exit broke a food-pallet rib and spilled grain into the Array trench.
The cook came through a flood-pump housing that tore his left ear when it snapped shut.
The mother passed her child through first and lost two fingernails keeping the copied sternum open.
One engineer emerged inside the shelter roof load. Caleb had to shift a silver beam while the foundation witness took the weight on its cracked shoulder.
Extraction weakened the route predator and every support still attached to it.
Tali moved people away from the shelter between each pull. Rina waited for `structure stable` before asking the next name.
The false body learned during extraction.
It put burns on copied hands.
It changed wind in background feeds.
It reversed the ventilator line correctly.
Ordinary details became less reliable after every use.
Rina stopped asking old questions.
"Give me something that happened after you entered."
One woman said the inside smelled like wet grain and hot coins.
Another said the copied Caleb had no tongue until she looked at it.
A child said the dark person in the cavity counted everyone except itself.
New local facts opened new exits.
Heat count fell to three.
The final three occupied the deepest section around the outside shadow.
One answered as the Copper Row shelter resident who had chosen Central Civic.
"I still choose shelter," he said. "I do not choose inside this body."
His direction had remained central and separate from captivity.
Caleb tore open the copied sternum.
The man stepped through and stayed beneath the shelter roof.
"I am not changing my vote," he told Rina.
"You do not have to."
Two heat marks remained.
The foundation witness crawled into the open chest with its one arm.
It carried Mina Cho’s page between its teeth.
The first heat mark belonged to a Mercy orderly. He answered to Iseul’s patient list by tapping the number of the bed he had moved.
Caleb pulled him free.
The last heat mark moved without pulse, breath, or temperature change.
It sat inside the person-shaped cavity where the silver copy had entered.
Rina asked name.
It used Caleb’s.
Sefa asked harm.
It listed every feeder wound Caleb carried.
Rina asked current local detail.
It copied the shelter in full.
The foundation witness put its palm against the mark.
The mark reached back with eleven separate rescue functions.
Carry.
Brace.
Open.
Lift.
Route.
None paused for a present choice.
Rina changed the test.
She offered the functions separate costs.
Carry one empty brace pallet east.
Hold one broken intake beam without moving people.
Open one door and accept any destination chosen after.
The mark answered all three with the same westward turn.
Sefa offered refusal.
"You may do nothing."
The mark treated nothing as delay and kept turning west.
The functions had fused into one destination.
The foundation witness drew a circle on its own chest.
Then it pointed at the cavity and tried to draw separate circles.
Its finger returned to the same line eleven times.
No current choice remained to ask.
Sefa watched through the chest camera.
"Could it learn one?"
The witness placed Mina’s page against the mark.
No recognition.
It showed the mark its own missing arm inside the body.
The mark used that arm to close the cavity.
The foundation witness barely escaped before copied ribs met behind it.
Real Kim found one printer impact.
```
THAT SECTION IS USING MY HOLLOW
WITHOUT ME.
```
Anika ran the mark through Ninth Harbor roll call. Eleven chair witnesses answered separately. The mark replied with one combined attendance signal.
Iseul offered a brace request tied to one named patient. The mark accepted the equipment and changed the destination to Central Shelter.
Mira opened South Ward’s door and asked for no movement beyond the threshold. The mark classified the open door as an intake route.
Three districts tested different functions.
One destination answered all of them.
Aren checked Mara’s route-body record.
"When separate functions stop answering separately, the body is across."
Caleb asked Rina.
"Any living claim left?"
"No."
He asked Sefa.
"Any direction to return?"
"No current one."
He asked the foundation witness.
It drew one broken circle and closed its hand.
Caleb asked Tali, "Can we contain it without killing it?"
She put four physical options on the map.
Array trench was already compromised.
Empty canal could hold three feeder bodies and no more mass.
Central Shelter could remain a cage only while Caleb and five supports kept the roof up.
Driving the body east would cross the 1,200-person evacuation corridor.
"Containment time here is eleven minutes before Mercy’s ramp gives," Tali said. "Movement routes cross people."
"Recovery chance?"
"No current claim detected by five methods. Unknown future chance."
She refused to turn unknown into zero.
"If you leave it alive, you are betting 1,200 people on a future choice that has no present signal. If you kill it, you end any chance we failed to detect."
Caleb looked at the person-shaped cavity.
"I understand."
The false body lifted its final support arm from Central Shelter.
The roof dropped onto Caleb’s silver beams. Mercy’s ramp split. One Bay Twelve jack punched through pavement and lost its four-inch lift.
Engineers got the first Ash column under the observatory edge. The second remained at the viaduct. The foundation witness held the intake wall with one arm and a shoulder that had started separating from its chest.
The distributed support survived the transfer.
Barely.
Caleb and the distributed columns took the roof load.
The route predator turned toward East Market’s largest evacuation corridor.
Twelve hundred people were still inside it.
