Zane opened his eyes slowly.

The room was quiet.

The thick walls doing what thick walls did. Keeping everything outside exactly where it was. The window blind still half drawn, the late evening light filtering through in long amber strips across the compact room.

He lay still for a moment processing the ceiling.

Then registered the weight on his chest.

Maren.

She was curled against him, one arm draped across his torso, her head resting just below his shoulder. Breathing even. Eyes closed. The specific peace of someone who had fallen asleep without planning to and had found a comfortable position and stayed there.

He didn’t move.

Just looked at her.

Her hair was loose from the previous activity they had just engaged in. Her face relaxed in sleep in a way it never quite was when she was awake. The calculation always running behind her eyes at rest when they were closed.

He reached over slowly and pushed a strand of hair back from her face.

She didn’t stir.

He checked his communicator carefully with his free hand.

’Uhm,’ he thought. ’What a day.’

He looked at her again.

’Someone seeing this,’ he thought, ’would genuinely doubt she’s a C-rank hero. Lying there like that. Peaceful. Like a baby who has absolutely never thought about chain activation windows or burst sequence timing or three point tactical pushes.’

’She looks soft,’ he thought. ’She is soft. She’s just very good at not advertising it.’

He kept caressing her hair slowly.

She made a small sound and shifted slightly closer without waking up.

He started again at the ceiling.

Then the notification appeared.

He almost laughed.

He went back to caressing her hair.
