My Desire System: The More They Want Me, The Stronger I Get
Chapter 34: Unmasking The Ghost
The hum of a medical air purifier filtered through the master bedroom of the District 8 safehouse.
Bekka pushed herself up from the edge of the mattress, wincing slightly as she rotated her bruised shoulder.
An antiseptic bandage covered the graze on her arm, taped with professional precision.
Across the spacious room, the dark-coated vigilante stood beside the panoramic window, looking out over the rain-swept district skyline.
"You should rest," he said quietly without turning around, his voice muffled by the dark fabric mask.
"The kinetic slug bruised your collarbone, but the bone is not fractured."
Bekka sat still for a moment, watching the steady rise and fall of his shoulders against the backdrop of distant neon towers.
"Why did you do it?" she asked softly, her voice missing its usual aggressive edge.
"You are a vigilante with a massive bounty on your head, and I spent days tracking your sightings for the Association."
"You could have let Olympus eliminate me in that alley," she continued, looking down at her bandaged fingers.
"It would have solved many of your problems."
"I do not let corrupt corporations execute honest people," he answered, turning away from the window to face her.
"Especially not heroes who have the courage to speak the truth when thirty million viewers are watching."
He walked over to the nightstand, picking up a cup of cold water and setting it down beside her hand.
"Besides, you are not just any pro hero," he added, a subtle hint of amusement coloring his tone.
Bekka tilted her head, her brow furrowing with sudden curiosity.
"What is that supposed to mean?" she asked, studying the posture of his shoulders and the cadence of his movement.
"Have we met before outside of combat?"
"You could say that," he replied, taking a step closer to the bed.
"Though the last time we talked, you were trying to arrest me for commandeering a syndicate transport van."
Leo reached up with both hands, gripping the edge of his dark fabric mask.
With a smooth pull, he slid the cloth over his head, letting his dark hair fall across his forehead in the soft room light.
Bekka froze, her chest tightening as her eyes widened in complete disbelief.
"You..." she stammered, scrambling to her feet so fast the mattress creaked beneath her.
"You are the guy from the District 8 heist van!"
"The very same," Leo smiled with a relaxed chuckle, crossing his arms over his chest.
"You almost had me pinned against that cargo van before I slipped through the undercarriage."
Bekka stared at his face, her mind racing at blinding speed as disconnected memories collided into an undeniable realization.
"And thanks for the extra pepperoni pizza the other night, by the way," he said with an easy smirk.
"You nearly gave Luna a heart attack when you knocked on her door."
Bekka’s jaw dropped, her cheeks instantly burning with a fiery blush.
"The shoes by the front entryway..." she whispered, touching her temples with both hands.
"The two warm soup bowls on the counter... the steam coming from behind the shower curtain!"
"That was you?!" she shouted, her voice wavering between mortification and astonished laughter.
"You were standing behind Luna’s window curtain in that jacket while I was eating pizza on her couch and complaining about the Ghost!"
"I was keeping quiet so I did not ruin your dinner," he corrected with a quiet grin.
"Though I have to admit, your lecture about capturing me in three days was quite entertaining."
"I cannot believe this," she groaned, burying her face into her hands as her shoulders shook with laughter.
"Luna knew the entire time, didn’t she?"
"She was trying to protect both of us," Leo explained gently.
"She knew how much your pro hero career meant to you, and she did not want you getting caught in the crossfire."
"And instead, I ended up charging into the crossfire on live television anyway," she said, letting out a long breath.
"I spent years believing the Association was the only way to make a difference in this city."
"The city is broken, Bekka," he told her honestly, his voice gentle but steady.
"The badges and the billboards are just paint to hide the rot underneath."
"I see that now," she whispered, looking down at her clenched fists before raising her gaze back to his face.
"When Olympus ordered my execution, not a single hero commander stepped in to question the directive."
"They only care about their stock dividends and corporate sponsorships," she added with bitter clarity.
"They never cared about saving lives."
Bekka lowered her hands, tear tracks shining on her flushed cheeks as she looked up into the face of the young man who had repeatedly saved her life.
The crushing weight of her suspension, the terror of the drone ambush, and the disillusionment with the Hero Association all dissolved in a flood of emotional relief.
"You idiot," she sobbed softly, stepping forward and throwing her arms tightly around his neck.
"You reckless, arrogant idiot."
Leo caught her waist with both hands, pulling her athletic frame gently against his chest as she rested her forehead into the crook of his neck.
Her body trembled with quiet sobs of relief, her hands gripping the fabric of his shirt as if afraid he might dissolve into shadow again.
"Thank you, Leo," she whispered against his collar, her voice thick with raw vulnerability.
"Thank you for being real."
A golden pulse rippled through the All-Spark in his chest, deepening the bond between their ether pathways.

Her personal communicator on the bedside table suddenly beeped with an abrasive emergency tone.
She pulled back from his chest, wiping her damp cheeks before reaching over to tap the flashing red screen.
The official council decree materialized in floating text: [ Notice of Immediate Revocation: Hero License #4882 (Bekka Hayes) has been terminated, and subject is classified as a Rogue Meta Accomplice with a 100,000 credit bounty ].
Bekka stared at the flashing bounty notice for three quiet seconds, the lingering pain in her chest hardening into unyielding resolve.
She reached down to the waistband of her tactical pants, unclipping her silver Horizon Division badge.
She held the crest in her palm, looking at the corporate emblem that had once been her greatest dream.
Without a second thought, she tossed the badge into the wastebasket beside the desk, letting it clatter into the trash with a hollow ring.
"I am done playing by their corrupt rules," she declared, looking into Leo’s eyes with fierce fire.
"From now on, I fight with you."
Leo smiled, placing his hand over her uninjured shoulder as the night rain washed against the safehouse windows.
"Welcome to the shadows, Bekka," he answered softly.
"We have a lot of work to do."
