My Desire System: The More They Want Me, The Stronger I Get
Chapter 100: A Bigger Sky
The morning sun climbed over the harbor cranes, illuminating the battered docks and soot-stained brick of District 9.
Outside the clinic entrance, Tessa and Toby sat on upturned plastic crates, checking names off a worn clipboard.
"Four thousand two hundred and ten accounted for," Toby called out, handing a bottle of clean water to a passing docker.
"Every single civilian extracted from the transport bay has been triaged and registered."
Cole sat on the bottom concrete step, nursing a paper cup of black coffee while scowling down at his splinted left arm.
"Redline, you illiterate track star, you signed the cast on my good arm instead of the broken one," Cole barked.
Redline leaned against the clinic railing, eating a cold jelly donut in his fourth backup suit of the day.
"Hey, my publicist says my autograph increases the resale value of medical fiberglass by thirty percent, dock boss."
"If you ever need cash for warehouse repairs, you can auction that cast to collectors in District 2."
"I would rather chop it off with an axe," Cole grunted, taking another sip of bitter coffee.
Inside the clinic vestibule, Luna gently pulled Leo’s torn jacket open to inspect the dark brand on his chest.
"Sit down on this bench, Leo, and do not dare stand up until your pulse drops below eighty."
"I am fine, Luna," Leo murmured, though his limbs felt as heavy as lead anchors.
"You have five cracked ribs, acute cellular ether depletion, and an alien target painted over your heart," she said sternly.
"That is the definition of not fine, young man."
She leaned in and kissed his cheek with soft, lingering warmth before bandaging his side with fresh gauze.
"So sit still while I do my job."
’Her hands are gentle, but I can feel the exhaustion trembling in her fingers after holding the district together.’
Outside near the police barricade, Bekka stood before a dozen hovering news drones, her posture unyielding.
"Officer Hayes, was this defense coordinated by the Hunter Association Central Directorate?" a reporter shouted from the crowd.
"The Directorate froze our accounts two days ago," Bekka answered directly into the camera lenses.
"District 9 was defended by its workers, its local clinic, and the brave responders standing right here in the mud."
"Any politician who tries to use this morning to claim municipal ownership of our docks will answer to precinct law."
Across the courtyard, Sierra leaned against the fender of a patrol cruiser, tossing an encrypted black data drive in her hand.
"Looking for something, Detective?" Sierra purred as Cassian approached her car.
"I just uploaded Kayser’s entire elite buyer ledger onto your secure server, Detective."
Cassian stared at his screen, watching three hundred corporate shell accounts decrypt in real time.
"You broke three federal cyber security laws doing that, Sierra."
"Arrest me when the sun sets, Rook, because right now your corporate friends are about to have a very bad fiscal quarter."
Near the ambulance bay, Rhodes and Iron Regent stood nose-to-nose over the smoking remains of the targeting rig.
"The magnetic housing was twenty millimeters too narrow, Forge," Rhodes insisted, poking an oil-stained finger at the billionaire’s armor.
"I will build you a sixty-million-credit research facility in District 1 to prove you wrong, old man," Forge declared.
"Only if the shop belongs to the union," Rhodes replied without blinking.
Sunlark knelt beside Tessa, admiring the handwritten chemical formulas covering the teenager’s notebook.
"Your antitoxin synthesis kept three hundred people breathing through an alien nerve strike, Tessa."
"The Crown Tower xenobiology laboratory has open research fellowships every autumn, and I want you to visit next week."
Tessa beamed with pride, adjusting her glasses as she replied, "I have to check the clinic shift rotation first, Miss Vey."
"Richter needs help with the physical therapy ward on Tuesdays."
Tidemarch walked up from the canal stairs, extending a hand to the dock union delegates to propose a formal maritime treaty.
Meanwhile, Meridian enchanted three storage closet doors so they opened directly into the clinic pantry, delighting the neighborhood children.
"Now every kid in the harbor is going to be stealing dried apricots from my storage bins," Richter complained, throwing his hands up in defeat.
Ajax stepped past the crowd, approaching Leo with an open, weary respect in his golden eyes.
"Raw strength could not open that flagship door, Leo Marsh."
"Thank you for saving my city when my fists fell short."
Hancock strolled past, a half-empty bottle of soda in hand, muttering, "If you two start hugging, I am walking into the ocean."
Cassian stepped forward, holding out a silver badge marked with the crest of the Crown Seven alongside a titanium transponder.
"The Council offers you a probationary Crown liaison badge, Marsh, and Forge has a prototype combat suit waiting."
Leo looked down at the gleaming silver insignia, then gently pushed it back toward Cassian’s chest.
"I am not your liaison, Cassian, and I do not wear corporate suits."
"I am a street ghost, and District 9 is where I belong."
He reached out and picked up only the black titanium transponder, slipping it into his pocket.
"If the city burns, press the button and I will stand with you on the line."
"Fair enough," Cassian said quietly, turning back toward his aircraft.
Leo leaned back against the brick wall as a chime chimed in his mind, updating his status across his vision.

Sierra stepped up beside him, looping a single glowing strand of Night Spool wire around his wrist with an affectionate smirk.
"Do not get too comfortable, shadow boy, because tomorrow I am breaking into Crown Tower to see what Cassian is hiding."
Bekka joined them, sliding an arm around Leo’s waist as she watched the morning traffic begin to stir across the bay.
"Leo, look at this drone footage from Fifth Street," Toby said, holding up his tablet with a grin.
"The crowd is chanting your name outside the precinct house."
"They are chanting for the Ghost, Toby, not for Leo Marsh," Leo answered quietly, watching the screen.
"And that is exactly how it needs to stay until District 9 is back on its feet."
"I know, but it is still pretty damn cool," Toby laughed, leaning back against the brick wall.
"Are you ready for what comes next, Leo?" Bekka asked softly.
"We take it one street at a time," Leo answered, looking out over the harbor.
Redline ran up carrying a cardboard box full of brand-new black cotton shirts, tossing one into Leo’s lap.
"The local print shops are already selling bootleg Ghost merchandise down on Fifth Street."
Leo unfolded the shirt and burst into a helpless laugh.
The black hood was adorned with two oversized cat ears because the printer had confused Kage’s silhouette with Leo’s mask.
Tessa proudly pulled an identical shirt over her sweater, grinning from ear to ear as she struck a heroic pose.
"Hey, I think the cat ears make you look approachable," Tessa laughed.
High above the avenue, Iron Regent’s transport and Nightwarden’s Corvid hovered awkwardly over the street, their pilots arguing over the radio about who was blocking the ambulance corridor.
Leo sat on the clinic steps beneath the vast, sunlit sky, surrounded by the people who had fought and bled for their home.
The world had become impossibly larger, but his street was still his own.
