My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 397: What Comes After
The gate was closing, slowly collapsing inward. The ancient light faded from its edges, the distant stars grew smaller, and the impossible worlds beyond it disappeared one by one.
Kai stood in front of it. He could still see the path, barely, a thin opening just wide enough for one person, maybe two. The voice was gone, but its last words were still in his mind.
The path is open. It will not remain open forever.
He could step through right now. He could finally find out what lay beyond the System, beyond the Disasters, and beyond everything humanity knew, a universe of ancient civilizations and broken worlds that might explain the First Civilization, and maybe even the System itself. The chance was right in front of him.
Sera stepped up beside him. She didn’t say anything at first. She just looked at the gate, and after a few seconds, she glanced at Kai. "You’re thinking about it."
Kai nodded. "Yes."
"You want to go."
"Yes."
Sera studied his face. "But you’re not going to."
Kai looked at her. "You know me too well."
She smiled. "Someone has to."
Behind them, Lily was frantically trying to save what data she could, clutching three ancient storage crystals to her chest. "Wait! Don’t let it close yet!"
Kai looked back. "Lily."
"I know!" She turned to the gate again. "Just give me another minute."
"You don’t have a minute."
"I know! That’s the problem!"
Gabriel walked over to them. She hadn’t said a word since the gate opened, and she stared into the fading passage with a look full of wonder, fear, curiosity, and responsibility. Finally, she looked at Kai. "You could go."
"I could," Kai said.
"Do you want to?"
Kai looked into the darkness. "Yes."
Gabriel waited.
"But..." Kai turned to look at the others, at Sera, Lily, and Aren, and at the ancient city around them. He thought of the millions of people in Nexus above them, and of Mythal, Elden, Mira, Raze, Mina, and Leo. His family, and his home.
He slowly shook his head. "Not yet."
Lily stared at him. "What?"
"I’m not going. I’m going back to Nexus."
Lily looked at him as though he had just said something impossible, then pointed at the gate. "But we finally found it! The First Civilization, the System, whatever is beyond the world!"
"I know."
"And you’re just going to walk away?"
Kai smiled. "For now."
Lily’s expression turned to disbelief. "We were one step away."
Sera laughed. "She might actually cry."
"I’m not going to cry!"
"You sound like you’re going to cry."
"I’m frustrated!"
"You’re right," Kai said, and Lily blinked. "We were one step away." Her expression softened slightly, and Kai looked back at the gate. "But we don’t know what’s on the other side, or how far away it is. We don’t know if there’s a way back, what lives there, or what happens if we leave."
Lily opened her mouth, then closed it again and slowly lowered the crystals.
"We have a lot of questions," Kai said.
She nodded reluctantly. "A lot of them."
"But we also have people who need us. Mythal just survived three Disasters, and ancient systems are waking up beneath Nexus. Six ruins across the continent are active, and something beyond this world knows we’re here." His expression turned serious. "We aren’t ready."
Gabriel stared at him, clearly surprised. "You actually admitted it."
"Admitted what?"
"That you’re not ready."
Kai smiled. "For once."
Gabriel laughed softly. "I didn’t think I’d ever hear you say that."
Sera crossed her arms. "I’ve been telling him that for months."
Kai glanced at her. "You’ve never said that."
"I implied it."
"You definitely didn’t."
"I did."
Lily raised her hand. "Can we stop arguing about whether Kai is capable of admitting things, and focus on the fact that we’re about to lose the greatest discovery in human history?"
"She’s right," Aren said.
Lily looked at him. "Thank you."
"I still think leaving is a bad idea."
"You’re ruining the moment."
The gate trembled, and a deep sound rolled through the chamber as the opening shrank again, until only a narrow passage was left.
Gabriel stepped beside Kai. "If you went through, I don’t think anyone would blame you. You’ve carried Mythal through three Disasters, and you came here looking for answers and found something no one else ever has." She looked at the gate. "If you chose to leave, I’d understand."
Kai smiled. "That’s exactly why I can’t."
Gabriel frowned. "Why?"
"Because people are depending on me." He looked up toward the surface. "And I don’t want to get so obsessed with the next answer that I forget the people who helped me reach this one."
Sera’s expression softened, Lily looked down, and even Aren stayed quiet.
Kai had spent this entire journey chasing the next mystery, the next ruin and the next answer, but now he understood that there would always be another one. There would always be another ancient record, another door, and another world, and if he kept chasing them without preparing the people behind him, he would eventually leave all of them exposed. The System had taught humanity to survive, and the First Civilization had warned them about what came after. Kai finally understood the lesson. Surviving wasn’t just about reaching the next stage. It was about making sure everyone could reach it with you.
He looked at Gabriel. "We need to prepare Nexus."
Gabriel nodded. "And Mythal, the other cities, the Church, and the Hunters."
"Yes."
She smiled. "That’s a long list."
"We’ll need a long list."
"But we can come back, right?" Lily asked, looking at the gate.
Kai turned to her. "Maybe."
Her eyes widened. "Maybe?"
"If this place could open once," Kai said, looking at Starbreaker, "we can probably open it again."
Lily’s face lit up. "That’s what I wanted to hear."
Sera laughed. "You’re already planning the next expedition."
"Of course."
Aren looked at her. "Then I’m coming."
"No," Lily said.
"Why?"
"Because you’re the competition."
"You need someone to compete with."
"I’ll find someone else."
Aren smiled. "You won’t."
Sera shook her head. "You two are going to be unbearable."
"Probably," Kai said with a smile.
Only a few meters of the opening remained, and the distant stars were almost gone. Kai took one final look, and for a moment, he saw the impossible silhouette again, far away among the stars, watching. He couldn’t tell whether it was the same figure or something else. This time, though, he didn’t feel afraid. He simply looked back at it, and then he turned away.
The gate closed.
BOOM.
The sound echoed through the underground city, and the enormous structure went dark. The stars and the impossible worlds were gone, and silence returned.
Lily stared at the sealed gate. "...That’s it?"
"Apparently," Sera said.
Lily sighed. "We almost had the answer."
"No," Kai said, walking past her. "We almost had one answer."
Lily paused, then slowly smiled. "That’s worse."
Kai laughed quietly.
As they walked toward the exit, the ancient city began shutting down behind them. Its lights faded, its machines stopped, and its great transportation lines fell silent. The First Civilization’s city was going back to sleep, but it wasn’t dead, not anymore. They had woken it, and they had opened the seventh gate, and that knowledge alone would change everything.
At the ancient passage, Aren looked back. "Do you really think it’ll open again?"
Kai looked at Starbreaker. "I don’t know."
"You say that a lot."
Kai smiled. "Maybe."
They started climbing, and then Kai stopped.
Sera noticed immediately. "What?"
There was something on the floor, a small symbol, almost invisible, that hadn’t been there before.
Lily hurried back. "What is that?"
Kai crouched beside it. It was the same broken circle, three sections and one empty, but this time a thin line ran straight through the center, like a path.
Lily’s scanner lit up. "There’s energy in it."
Kai touched the symbol, and the floor glowed, and everyone froze. A message appeared, not in the ancient language and not in the System interface. It was simply there, clear and impossible to misunderstand.
FIRST PHASE COMPLETE.
Kai’s expression changed.
"First phase?" Lily said.
Another line appeared.
THE WORLD HAS BEEN PREPARED.
Gabriel stepped closer. "What does that mean?"
Kai didn’t answer as the symbol pulsed and a third line appeared.
THE CANDIDATE MAY NOW CHOOSE.
Nobody spoke.
Sera looked at Kai. "Choose what?"
Kai stared at the message, his expression serious. He had been given rewards, missions, trials, abilities, and warnings, but nothing had ever handed him a choice this large.
The symbol changed, and two paths appeared. One pointed upward, toward the surface, toward Nexus and Mythal and everything Kai already knew. The other pointed back toward the sealed seventh gate, toward the stars and the unknown.
"It really is a choice," Lily said.
Gabriel looked at Kai. "It isn’t telling you what to do."
"No." Kai looked at the two paths. There was no mission, no objective, no reward or penalty, and no guarantee. There was only the choice.
He slowly smiled. "Good."
Sera looked at him. "Good?"
"That means it’s finally our decision," Kai said, turning toward the path that led upward.
As he stepped forward, the symbol behind him began to fade. The path to the surface stayed lit, and the path to the gate stayed dark, but it was still there, waiting.
Kai looked up the stairs. "Let’s go home."
Sera smiled. "Finally."
Lily sighed. "I still want to go through the gate."
"So do I," Aren said.
Gabriel laughed. "I think all of us do."
Kai looked back one last time. The ancient symbol had almost faded away, but one final word appeared before it vanished.
CHOOSE.
Kai turned away, not because he was abandoning the unknown, but because he had decided to prepare for it. And somewhere beyond the sealed gate, something was waiting for his answer.
