My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 396: The World Beyond
The gate was open, and Kai stood at its edge.
Beyond it was a darkness unlike anything underground or anything he had seen at night. It was deeper than that, and it didn’t feel like part of their world at all. Stars filled the distance, countless stars, and while a few of them formed familiar shapes, most were arranged in patterns Kai had never seen.
Lily stood beside him, staring through the opening, and she had forgotten to breathe.
"Lily," Sera said. There was no response. "Lily." Still nothing, so Sera waved a hand in front of her face. "Come back."
Lily finally blinked. "I’m here."
"You stopped breathing."
"I was thinking."
"You were staring."
"Thinking while staring."
Sera shook her head. "Sure."
Kai stepped closer to the gate, and the air changed. There was no wind, no temperature, and no pressure, almost as if the space beyond the gate wasn’t supposed to have air at all. He reached toward it, and his fingers stopped a few centimeters short of the darkness as Distortion moved across his hand.
For a moment, he could feel distance, possibilities, and paths, but they were different from the ones he usually sensed. They didn’t branch out from the present. They seemed to begin somewhere else entirely, as if the world beyond the gate followed different rules.
Kai pulled his hand back.
Sera noticed. "What?"
"Nothing."
"That wasn’t nothing."
Kai looked at her. "I don’t understand it yet."
Sera nodded. "Fair."
"Look," Lily said suddenly, stepping forward.
Something was moving beyond the stars. At first, Kai thought it was a planet, but then it moved again, too slowly to be a ship and far too large to be a creature. A shadow crossed an entire section of the star field, passing between two distant worlds before it vanished.
Aren stared. "What was that?"
"I don’t know," Lily said.
"Could it be a structure?" Gabriel asked.
"No." Lily zoomed in with her scanner. "It’s moving."
Sera looked at Kai. "How big?"
Kai watched the place where the shadow had disappeared. "I don’t know."
That answer made everyone uncomfortable.
Lily slowly lowered her scanner. "I don’t think we should try to find out."
Sera looked at her. "Finally, some wisdom."
"I can be wise."
"Occasionally."
Lily ignored her as the view beyond the gate shifted, and a massive structure came into sight. At first it was impossible to understand. It looked like a city, then a machine, then a mountain, its surface covered in enormous geometric shapes. Some of them floated around it, while others reached outward like bridges, and millions of lights moved across it.
"That’s a civilization," Aren said.
"Maybe," Gabriel said.
"I don’t think it’s one city," Lily said. "I don’t think we’re even seeing the whole thing."
She was right. The structure stretched past the edges of the gate, far too large to fit inside the view.
Kai studied it, and then he noticed something. "It’s broken."
Lily looked at him. "What?"
Kai pointed at a massive section of the structure that wasn’t damaged, but missing, as if an entire piece had been cut away.
Another image appeared, and at first it looked like a planet, until Kai realized its surface had been cracked wide open. An enormous section had been torn away, and pieces of land floated around it while its atmosphere spilled out into space like a glowing cloud.
Lily’s expression changed. "That’s a world."
Sera stared at it. "What happened to it?"
No one answered.
Next came an enormous ring broken in half, with ancient ruins drifting all around it. Buildings floated through the dark, roads led nowhere, and statues hung upside down in space. Entire cities had been torn apart and left suspended there.
"Those ruins," Gabriel whispered. "They look ancient."
"They’re older than Aegis," Aren said, stepping closer.
"We can’t know that," Lily said.
Aren pointed. "Look at the architecture."
Lily looked, and then she stopped. The structures were enormous, and their design was unlike anything they had seen, with no trace of any civilization they knew, not even the First.
"I don’t recognize them," Aren said.
"Neither do I," Lily said.
The ruins bothered Kai, and not because they had been destroyed. It was because they looked abandoned, as though whoever built them had left suddenly, or had been taken.
The view shifted again, and this time there were lights, thousands of them, moving between the stars. Kai thought they were ships. Some were small, while others were enormous. One was so large it looked like a moving city, another seemed to be made entirely of light, and a third was shaped like a massive ring, and none of them had any visible engines.
"Those are civilizations," Lily said, staring.
"Or what’s left of them," Gabriel said.
Sera looked at the moving lights. "Are they human?"
"No," Lily said.
Aren frowned. "How can you tell?"
Lily pointed as one of the structures drifted closer, and for a moment, the gate showed it clearly. It was a city wrapped around an enormous tree-like structure, with buildings growing from its branches and small glowing figures moving between them. They were alive, but they weren’t human. Their bodies were thin and elongated, and their shapes seemed to change as they moved.
More scenes followed. One civilization lived inside a massive crystal, another on a world covered almost entirely in water, and another on an enormous ring circling a dying star. None of them looked human, and none of them resembled Nexus or the First Civilization.
Humanity wasn’t alone. It wasn’t even close.
"There are other civilizations," Sera said quietly.
Kai nodded. "Yes."
"How many?"
"I don’t know."
"I don’t think the gate is showing us everything," Lily said, checking her scanner. "The view keeps changing. It isn’t giving us a complete picture."
"Then what is it showing us?" Kai asked.
Lily stared into the dark. "Fragments."
That was exactly what it felt like to Kai. The gate wasn’t opening onto another world. It was giving them glimpses, a window, a warning, and a direction.
Then something appeared that made him freeze. It was faint, almost hidden among the stars, a circle broken into sections, with three joined together and one set apart.
Kai’s eyes narrowed. "The System."
Lily looked where he was pointing and scanned it, and her expression changed. "It’s similar, but not identical."
Gabriel stepped closer. "Similar?"
The symbol appeared again, larger this time, and it unmistakably resembled the System’s ancient symbol. But the lines were older and the geometry more complicated, and something was missing from its center.
"Maybe the System didn’t invent that symbol," Lily whispered.
Kai stared at it. "Maybe it inherited it."
The gate trembled, and the view beyond it warped. The stars stretched, the broken worlds vanished, and everything went black.
Sera drew her sword. "What happened?"
Kai didn’t answer. A massive amount of energy was pouring through the gate, and across the continent, all six ruins pulsed in answer, one after another, and then the seventh. The ground shook, and far above them, the ancient systems beneath Nexus flared to life again, freezing the transport lines and setting off every emergency system in the city.
Gabriel looked at her device. "We’re losing contact with half the city."
"Something changed," Lily said, looking at the gate.
Kai stepped forward. "What?"
"The gate isn’t showing the outside anymore."
Kai looked into the darkness.
Then the darkness looked back.
A single line of light appeared across the center of the gate, then another, and another, until seven symbols had formed the same seven-node pattern. This time, they began moving slowly outward, drifting closer until they formed a circle around Kai.
Sera stepped forward. "Kai?"
Kai didn’t move. The gate went completely silent, every machine in the underground city stopped, and every light froze. Even Starbreaker went dark. Then a message appeared, not in the ancient language or the language of Aegis, and not through the Church’s translation system. It appeared directly in the air, and everyone could read it.
CANDIDATE CONFIRMED.
Nobody moved. Lily’s face went pale, and Aren stared.
"No," Gabriel whispered.
Sera looked at Kai. "What does that mean?"
Kai couldn’t answer, because something was happening inside him. Distortion erupted, and the air around him exploded outward.
BOOM!
Sera was thrown backward. "Kai!" She caught herself and ran straight back toward him as the chamber shook and ancient pillars began to crack and fall.
Lily grabbed the crystal records. "Everything’s coming down!"
"Everyone out!" Gabriel shouted, taking command.
Aren grabbed Lily’s arm. "Move!"
"I have the records!"
"Good!"
"Don’t let me drop them!"
"I won’t!"
Another explosion rocked the chamber, and a whole section of the ancient city collapsed. Kai stood at the center of it all, with Distortion completely out of control. Space bent around him, the floor vanished beneath his feet, the walls stretched, and stars flickered in and out of existence all around him.
Sera reached him. "Kai!"
He looked at her, and for a moment she saw something strange in his eyes. It wasn’t fear. It was confusion. He couldn’t control it.
She grabbed his arm. "Look at me."
Kai’s eyes focused. "Sera..."
"You’re here." Another tremor hit, and she tightened her grip. "Stay with me."
Kai nodded, and Distortion began to settle, not completely, but enough.
"The gate is collapsing!" Lily shouted from across the chamber.
"Everyone move!" Gabriel said, pointing toward the exit.
Aren pushed Lily forward. "Go!"
They ran as the seventh gate began breaking apart behind them. The enormous structure cracked, ancient energy exploded through the chamber, and the darkness beyond the gate flashed.
For a fraction of a second, Kai saw a figure. It wasn’t Bahamut, the Candidate, or the faceless figure from the First Civilization. It was a humanoid silhouette he couldn’t understand, standing somewhere that shouldn’t have had any ground, with stars, worlds, and perhaps entire galaxies moving behind it.
It looked directly at Kai, and a voice appeared in his mind. It didn’t come through the System or through Tiamat, and it didn’t come as sound. It simply appeared, ancient and calm and impossibly far away.
"You have survived the trials."
Kai stopped, and Sera grabbed his arm. "Kai!"
"You have endured destruction," the voice said, and images flashed through Kai’s mind of Tiamat, the Six Calamities, Bahamut, Mythal, his family and friends, every trial and every moment he had almost failed. "You have learned to survive. You have learned to stand together." The voice grew quieter. "You have learned to continue."
Kai’s heart began to pound.
"Now..."
Everything stopped. The collapsing chamber, the falling stone, and the screaming machinery all froze, and even time seemed to hold still. Only Kai was still aware, and the figure beyond the gate stood watching him, waiting.
"Decide whether you wish to leave."
Kai stared. Leave Nexus, or the continent, or the world? He couldn’t tell what it meant, but the choice itself was clear.
"The path is open," the voice continued. "It will not remain open forever."
Kai looked at Sera. She was frozen, and so were Lily, Gabriel, and Aren. Only he could hear it.
He looked back at the figure. "Who are you?"
There was no answer.
"Are you the System? Are you the Candidate?"
Nothing.
Kai’s eyes narrowed. "Then what are you?"
The figure stayed still, and at last the voice answered. "A witness."
Kai frowned. "A witness to what?"
The answer came quietly. "To what you become."
The gate began to close. Kai felt Distortion surge again, and he knew he could force it open. But the voice had told him the path would not stay open forever.
He looked at Sera again, and at Lily and Gabriel, and at the ancient city around them. He thought of Mythal, of Mina and Leo, of his friends and his family and his home. Then he looked beyond the gate, at a universe full of unknown worlds, broken civilizations, and things the System couldn’t understand. This choice wasn’t about curiosity anymore. It was about leaving everything behind.
"The trials prepared you to survive," the voice said as the gate kept closing. "They did not decide where you would go." The figure began to fade. "That choice is yours."
The gate closed, and the underground city went dark. Kai stood frozen for a moment, and then time resumed.
BOOM!
The rest of the chamber collapsed, and Sera pulled Kai backward. "Move!"
Kai stumbled.
"The exit!" Lily shouted.
Gabriel led them toward the ancient passage while Aren shoved a fallen stone aside. "Keep moving!"
They ran as the ancient city crumbled behind them. Kai looked back one last time, and the seventh gate was gone, leaving only darkness where it had stood. But the voice was still in his mind.
You have survived the trials. Now decide whether you wish to leave.
Kai looked up toward the surface, toward Nexus and the world he knew. For the first time, he hadn’t been given a mission, a quest, or an objective. He had been given a choice, and somehow, that frightened him more than any Disaster ever had.
