My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 391: Beneath Nexus
The door beneath Nexus kept opening, slowly, the enormous stone grinding apart with a sound that shook the chamber. Dust drifted down from the ceiling, ancient mechanisms turned somewhere in the dark, and a stairway appeared, descending into the earth farther than Starbreaker’s light could reach.
Sera stepped up beside Kai. "That’s deep."
"Very deep," Lily said, already moving forward.
Gabriel looked at the ancient map. "The deepest recorded excavation beneath Nexus reached four hundred and twelve meters."
Aren glanced down the stairs. "This goes much deeper than that."
Lily nodded eagerly. "Much."
Sera looked at her. "You’re excited about that?"
"Of course."
"We’re about to walk into an ancient structure that’s been sealed for thousands of years."
Lily smiled. "Exactly."
Sera sighed. "She’s going to touch something."
"I know," Kai said.
Lily stopped. "I heard that."
Sera grinned. "Good."
Lily pointed at her. "I’m a professional."
Aren raised an eyebrow. "That’s not what the evidence suggests."
Lily turned on him. "You’ve been exploring ruins for years. You should know touching things is part of the job."
"No," Aren said, shaking his head. "Surviving is part of the job."
Kai walked past both of them. "You can argue later."
He stepped onto the first stair, and the ancient stone lit up beneath his foot. A faint blue glow ran down the staircase, step after step, until the whole stairway was glowing.
Lily’s eyes went wide. "It recognizes us."
"Or him," Gabriel said, and everyone looked at Kai.
Kai looked down at his feet. "I didn’t do anything."
Lily reached for her scanner. "That’s even more interesting."
Kai kept walking, and the others followed.
At first, they could still hear Nexus far above them, the vibration of transport lines, the hum of machinery, and the faint rumble of construction. The deeper they went, the quieter the world became. At a hundred meters, the city was barely audible, and at two hundred, there was nothing at all. By three hundred, even the air felt different.
Kai stopped, and Sera nearly walked into him. "What?"
"The air."
Lily checked her scanner. "The oxygen level is normal."
"That’s not what I mean." Kai raised his hand, and Distortion stirred faintly as the air moved around his fingers. "It isn’t moving naturally."
Lily studied the readings, and her expression changed. "You’re right. There’s airflow, but there shouldn’t be. It’s moving through the walls."
Sera frowned. "The walls?"
"There’s an entire ventilation system built into the stone."
Aren crouched and touched the wall, then quickly pulled his hand back. "That’s not stone." He brushed the dust away, revealing a thin metallic layer beneath the gray surface. "It’s layered. Some kind of ancient alloy."
Lily’s eyes widened. "How old?"
Aren shook his head. "I don’t know."
Lily smiled. "Good."
Sera stared at her. "Why is that good?"
"Because if Aren doesn’t know," Lily said, looking down the stairs, "then we’re about to find something very old."
The staircase finally ended at a tunnel, and it was nothing like an ordinary underground facility. The ceiling was at least thirty meters above them, held up by massive pillars carved with symbols.
Lily started toward the nearest one, and Kai looked at her. "Lily."
"I know," she said, stopping herself.
Sera laughed. "Progress."
Lily ignored her and studied the pillar from a safe distance. "This isn’t Aegis. Aegis built everything around defense. Walls, towers, roads, and energy systems all had a purpose." She pointed at the pillars. "These are different."
"They’re too large," Aren said.
"Exactly. They weren’t built for efficiency."
Kai looked at the carvings. "Then what were they built for?"
Lily smiled. "I don’t know."
Sera groaned. "You’re happy again."
"Because we found something I can’t explain."
"That’s your favorite sentence."
"It really is."
They moved on, and the tunnel opened onto a massive underground road. It had two enormous lanes stretching away into the darkness, with no rails, no signs, and no markings, only huge slabs of black material threaded with thin lines of blue energy.
Aren stepped onto it and looked down. "I’ve studied Aegis roads. They used stone reinforced with mana channels. This is something else."
Lily crouched and held her scanner close to the surface. "It isn’t mana. The road is generating its own energy."
"From what?" Gabriel asked.
"I don’t know." Lily swept the scanner along the road, and the readings climbed before suddenly dropping. She froze.
"What happened?" Sera asked.
Lily slowly stood. "The road reacted to us."
The blue lines ahead brightened one after another until the entire road was glowing, and a deep hum traveled through the cavern. Something moved in the darkness, and Sera reached for her sword.
"Wait," Kai said, raising a hand.
The sound grew louder, but nothing attacked. Instead, lights appeared along the road, one, then another, then dozens, then hundreds, until the entire underground highway was lit in both directions as far as they could see.
"This is..." Lily began.
"A transportation network," Aren finished.
"How old?" Gabriel asked.
"Older than Aegis," Lily said, walking slowly alongside it. "And there are no records of it anywhere."
Gabriel looked around. "The Church has records of almost every major civilization found beneath Nexus."
"Not this one," Lily said.
Eventually, the road split four ways. One path sloped down, another climbed upward, a third passed through a massive stone arch, and the fourth went straight into the wall.
Sera stared. "There’s a road going into the wall."
"It’s not actually a wall," Lily said, pointing, and as they watched, a section of the stone turned transparent to reveal another road running behind it.
"How?" Sera asked.
Lily’s eyes lit up. "Spatial layering."
Kai could feel it too. The space ahead wasn’t normal. The structure wasn’t just underground. It was folded, so entire sections could sit beside each other without ever physically touching.
He reached out, and Distortion responded. For a moment, the darkness turned transparent, and he saw layers, one city beneath another, one road beneath another, structures stacked down through impossible depths. There was a civilization beneath Nexus, another beneath that one, and another beneath that.
Kai pulled his hand back, and Sera noticed. "What did you see?"
"Layers," Kai said, looking into the dark. "Cities."
Lily’s expression turned serious. "How many?"
"I couldn’t tell."
Gabriel said nothing, and for the first time, Aren looked uncomfortable. "Then Nexus isn’t built over one civilization. It’s built over several."
On their first day in Nexus, Gabriel had told them the city was built on top of older cities, but none of them had understood how literally she meant it. Layer after layer, civilization after civilization, and beneath all of them, something had stayed sealed.
They went deeper. The great highway gave way to a narrower road, the walls grew smoother, and the symbols changed.
Lily stopped at one of them. "This symbol appears in the Aegis records."
"Then we’re getting closer to Aegis," Aren said.
"No. Look at the shape." Lily pulled up an Aegis record and set the two side by side. They were almost identical, except the older symbol had a small section the Aegis version was missing.
"They’re related," Sera said.
"But not identical," Lily said.
Kai studied the older symbol. "This civilization came first, and Aegis copied them."
"Or inherited their technology," Lily said.
Gabriel’s expression grew thoughtful. "That would explain why Aegis knew so much. Perhaps they didn’t discover everything themselves."
"They inherited it," Kai said.
Gabriel nodded. "From someone older."
Deeper still, they found something none of them expected. It was a door, enormous, but unlike everything else they had seen, it wasn’t damaged at all. There were no cracks, no broken mechanisms, and no corrosion. It looked as though it had been built yesterday.
Lily stopped several meters away from it. "I don’t like this."
Sera looked surprised. "Finally."
"It’s too intact," Lily said.
Aren nodded, studying the surrounding structure. "She’s right. Everything else down here has degraded. This hasn’t."
Kai walked closer. The surface was completely black, with no symbols, no handles, and no decorations, only perfectly smooth stone.
Sera looked at him. "Can you feel anything?"
Kai closed his eyes and let Distortion spread. For a moment, the world went quiet, and then he felt it. There was something on the other side, not a movement or a presence, but a possibility, a path that shouldn’t exist.
He opened his eyes. "There’s something behind it."
Lily stepped closer. "What? Is it alive?"
"No."
"Is it a machine?"
"I don’t know."
"Is it dangerous?"
Kai looked at her. "I don’t know."
Lily nodded. "Excellent."
Sera sighed. "Why does that make you happy?"
"Because we finally found something nobody understands."
Kai looked at the door. He could feel a faint pressure from it, as though it were waiting, not for them, but for someone.
He stepped closer, and the black door lit up. Lines spread across its surface until seven symbols had formed, six glowing blue and the seventh dark. It was the seven-node pattern again.
"This is the central structure," Lily whispered.
Gabriel looked at the symbols. "Then the seven ruins weren’t built to lead here."
"They were built to activate this," Kai said.
The six glowing symbols pulsed one after another, and all around them, deep beneath Nexus, something began to move. The door stayed closed, but a message appeared across it. It wasn’t in the language of Aegis, or any language Lily recognized, but Starbreaker translated it.
FOUNDATION SYSTEM.
Lily went very still. "Foundation..."
CIVILIZATION STORAGE.
"Storage?" Aren said.
HISTORY PRESERVATION.
Gabriel’s expression changed. "They weren’t storing weapons."
"No," Kai said.
SURVIVAL CONTINGENCY.
Sera stepped closer. "What does that mean?"
Kai didn’t answer as the final line appeared.
IF THE WORLD ABOVE FAILS...
Everyone went silent as the last words formed.
THE WORLD BELOW WILL CONTINUE.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
"The whole structure," Lily said, swallowing. "It wasn’t built as a ruin."
"It was built as a backup," Aren said.
Gabriel’s face went pale. "A backup for an entire civilization."
Kai looked back down the endless road behind them, at the ventilation, the energy systems, and the impossible layers of space. None of it had been meant as a tomb or a forgotten city. It was a shelter, built so a civilization could survive the destruction of the world above, and judging by how perfectly intact it was, it had been waiting ever since.
Kai stepped toward the door, and Starbreaker reacted, rising out of his hand as blue light flooded the room. The seventh symbol lit up at last, and the entire door began to tremble.
Sera drew her sword, Aren reached for his relic, and Gabriel stepped back.
"Kai..." Lily said, her eyes wide.
"I know."
The door opened, but it didn’t swing outward or inward. The space itself split apart, revealing a vast darkness beyond. Then the lights came on, one by one, thousands and then millions of them.
Beyond the doorway was an underground city. It wasn’t a ruin waiting to be excavated. It was a city, perfectly preserved, its towers rising out of the dark with roads stretching between them. Ancient lights illuminated entire districts, massive machines sat dormant, and buildings that had never collapsed stood exactly as they had for thousands of years. At its center, a colossal tower reached toward a ceiling too far away to see.
"That’s impossible," Lily whispered.
Aren stared, and then he slowly smiled. "No. It’s not."
As Kai looked out over the ancient city, a message appeared.
WELCOME, SURVIVORS.
Then another.
THE SURFACE HAS FAILED BEFORE.
After a pause, a third.
IT WILL FAIL AGAIN.
Kai’s expression hardened as the final message appeared.
