My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 390: The Seventh Location
The words were still glowing across the ancient crystal, and for several seconds, nobody spoke. Even Aren, who always had something to say about ancient ruins, stayed quiet.
Lily slowly lowered her scanner and looked at Starbreaker resting on the ancient platform. "Prepare the world... then what is it preparing us for?"
Kai didn’t answer. His eyes stayed on the display, where the last two messages still glowed. Preparation complete. Next phase available.
The answer was probably tied to the seven ruins and the four phases. He could feel a pattern there, but the pieces still refused to fit together.
Sera crossed her arms. "We’ve been finding pieces of the same puzzle for days."
"Seven ruins, the Aegis records, the Candidate, the System, and the launch system," Lily said, pointing at Starbreaker. "And whatever this is."
"Don’t forget the signal," Aren said, and everyone turned to him. "The seven ruins activated at almost the same time."
Gabriel’s expression turned serious. "And six of them are accounted for."
Lily’s eyes narrowed. "Six." She pulled up the map, and a projection of the continent rose above her device with six glowing points spread across it. There was Aegis, the Silent Gate, the structure beneath the northern mountains, the ruins by the western sea, the buried complex in the eastern forest, and the old observation station south of Nexus.
Lily zoomed out, then rotated the map, and her expression changed. "Wait. The signals weren’t random."
Kai stepped closer. "What?"
Lily enlarged the image, and Gabriel looked over her shoulder. The six points formed an incomplete shape, almost a circle, with one empty space.
Aren frowned. "There’s supposed to be another point."
"Exactly," Lily said, checking the Church’s archive data. "But no signal came from the center, and there’s no registered ruin there."
"There isn’t," Gabriel said.
"That’s impossible," Lily said. "The pattern doesn’t work without it." She shifted the points around, and every time she tried to complete the shape, the same empty space remained. It wasn’t somewhere beyond the continent or hidden in some distant wilderness. It was right in the middle.
Lily slowly looked up. "...Nexus."
The room went quiet again.
"We already knew something was under the city," Sera said. "We saw it on the Church’s map."
"We knew something was there," Lily said. "We didn’t know it was the seventh node, or that the whole pattern was built around it." She zoomed in until the empty point sat directly beneath the Central District.
Gabriel stared at it. "No."
Sera looked at her. "You know something?"
Gabriel didn’t answer right away. Then she slowly shook her head. "Not something I knew." She looked around at the ancient archive. "Something I should have known."
Kai studied her face. "Explain."
Gabriel took a breath. "The oldest records of Nexus say the city was founded about eight hundred years ago. But they never say why it was built here."
Aren frowned. "That matters?"
"Very much." Gabriel pulled up a much older map. The modern city disappeared, and in its place was a nearly empty map of the region, with no roads, no districts, and no landmarks, only one strange marking. It was a massive circle, right where Nexus stood now.
Lily’s eyes widened. "What is that?"
"We don’t know." Gabriel zoomed in, and the image blurred. The marking was partly damaged, but several symbols were still visible beneath it.
Lily translated them slowly. "Foundation. Below." Her expression tightened as she read the last line. "Do not open."
Aren stepped closer. "That’s not a warning I’d ignore."
Sera looked at him. "You’re a ruin hunter."
"Exactly. Warnings like that usually mean there’s something interesting behind them."
Lily sighed. "That’s probably the worst reason to open an ancient seal."
Aren smiled. "And yet you want to open it too."
"I never said I didn’t."
Sera laughed quietly. "At least she’s honest."
Kai looked at Gabriel. "How deep is it?"
"We don’t know. We’ve never reached it." Gabriel looked at the map. "Nexus was built around it, then over it, and eventually right on top of it."
"How long has it been there?" Kai asked.
"Longer than Nexus."
Lily slowly lowered her scanner. "Then the city wasn’t built here by accident."
Gabriel didn’t answer, and her silence was enough.
Sera looked between them. "But if it was already here, why didn’t anyone know?"
"Because nobody could find it," Gabriel said quietly.
Aren shook his head. "That’s not possible. Nexus has been excavated for centuries. Foundations, sewers, transportation tunnels, old defensive structures. We’ve dug beneath the Central District dozens of times."
"And never found it," Lily said.
"Exactly."
Kai looked at the ancient circle. "Then it was hidden."
"Or sealed," Gabriel said.
"There’s a difference."
"A very large one," Gabriel said, bringing up several Church records. Most were incomplete, but one old report caught Kai’s eye.
CENTRAL FOUNDATION EXCAVATION: FAILED.
DEPTH REACHED: 412 METERS.
RESULT: NO FOUNDATION DETECTED.
Kai frowned. "Four hundred meters."
"That’s deeper than most of the old structures," Aren said.
"Look at the last line," Lily said, pointing.
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS: IMPOSSIBLE.
Aren blinked. "What?"
Lily read the rest of the report. "The excavation team said the deeper they dug, the farther away the structure seemed to be."
Sera stared at her. "That doesn’t make sense."
"No," Lily said, her expression growing serious. "Not unless the structure isn’t physically connected to the ground."
Kai understood immediately. "Space."
"Possibly."
Kai looked down at his hand as Distortion stirred faintly around his fingers. For the first time since entering the archive, he felt something familiar. It wasn’t danger, not exactly. It was space. Something beneath Nexus was bending it, not violently, but as if it had been folded and hidden behind another layer of reality.
You feel it, Tiamat said.
Kai stayed still. You knew?
I suspected.
About the seventh location?
About what lies beneath the city.
Kai’s eyes narrowed. Why didn’t you tell me?
You did not ask.
He almost sighed. You could have mentioned it.
You were busy surviving ancient civilizations.
Kai couldn’t tell whether she was being sarcastic. Probably both.
Do you know what’s beneath Nexus?
I know what it was built to contain.
Is it dangerous?
Everything worth hiding is dangerous.
Kai glanced up, and Sera was watching him with her eyes slightly narrowed. "You just had one of those conversations again, didn’t you?"
Kai looked at her. "How do you know?"
"You get that expression."
"What expression?"
"The one where you’re talking to someone who isn’t here."
Lily looked over. "Again?"
Kai sighed. "It’s nothing."
Sera smiled. "Sure."
Gabriel noticed the exchange, but she didn’t interrupt. She turned back to the map. "We need to investigate the location."
"Agreed," Aren said immediately.
Lily looked at him. "You’re volunteering?"
"I’m a ruin hunter. If there’s an ancient structure under Nexus older than the city itself, I want to see it."
Sera smirked. "Trying to beat us to another discovery?"
"Obviously."
Lily crossed her arms. "You know we’re going together."
"Then I’ll still beat you."
"Keep dreaming."
Kai looked at the two of them. "You realize we have no idea how to get there."
Aren’s expression turned thoughtful. "Actually, I might." He reached into his gear bag and pulled out a small metal disc covered in faint symbols. "I found this three years ago, under the Central District."
Gabriel’s eyes widened. "Why didn’t you report it?"
Aren shrugged. "I did. The report was rejected. They said the disc was damaged, the symbols were meaningless, and the dig site was unstable." He looked at the disc. "I kept it anyway."
Lily took it from him. "These aren’t meaningless." She turned it until the nearly invisible symbols caught the light from Starbreaker, and the disc reacted, a faint blue line tracing across its surface.
Lily froze. "It recognized Starbreaker."
The line spread, and a map appeared, but it wasn’t a map of the continent or of Nexus. It was vertical, showing layer after layer beneath the city. One, two, three, four, and then dozens more.
"An underground map," Aren said, leaning closer.
"How far does it go?" Gabriel asked.
Lily kept scrolling. The layers went past the known foundations, past the old transportation tunnels and sewer systems, past every excavation the Church had ever recorded, until the map finally stopped. At the very bottom was the broken circle, with three dark sections and one empty.
"That’s the Fourth," Lily whispered.
Kai looked at her. "Not a phase."
"A location."
The disc changed, and new words appeared one line at a time.
SEVENTH NODE.
SEALED.
ACCESS CONDITION: QUALIFIED.
Sera stepped closer. "Qualified."
"Preparation complete," Lily said, looking at Starbreaker.
Gabriel’s face went pale. "The ancient systems aren’t just identifying you."
Kai looked at her. "What are they doing?"
"They’re giving you access," Gabriel said slowly.
The map expanded, and a single route appeared. It started beneath the center of Nexus and descended deeper and deeper until it reached a massive chamber far below the city. At the bottom stood what looked almost like a door, except that it was hundreds of meters wide, with seven empty slots surrounding it. Six of them were glowing, and one was dark.
"Six ruins," Lily said, staring at it.
Kai nodded. "Six nodes."
"Then the seventh..."
"Is the door."
Nobody spoke. The seven ruins had never been separate locations. They were parts of one system, and Nexus was sitting directly on top of its center.
Sera looked at Kai, then down at the floor. "So we’ve been searching the entire continent, and the answer was under our feet."
Kai looked up toward the ceiling, toward the streets of Nexus far above them, the millions of people, the towers and markets and homes, and everything else that made it a living city. And beneath all of it, something ancient had been sleeping.
Distortion shifted, and the air around Kai warped. For less than a second, he saw another possibility. Nexus was gone, with no buildings, roads, or towers, and beneath where it had stood rose something enormous, a structure stretching farther than he could see.
Then the vision vanished, and Kai’s expression hardened.
Sera noticed. "What did you see?"
Kai didn’t answer right away.
Do not mistake the door for the destination, Tiamat said quietly.
Then what is it?
An entrance.
To what?
Tiamat was silent, and Kai waited.
That, she said at last, is the question you are finally strong enough to ask.
Kai looked back at the underground map. The seventh location wasn’t just another ruin. It had been sealed beneath the largest city on the continent for thousands of years, and now it was responding to them.
The disc trembled, and then the whole chamber shook.
BOOM.
Dust fell from the ceiling as Lily checked the display. "The seventh node just activated."
A second tremor hit, and this time everyone felt it. Somewhere far below them, beneath even the oldest foundations of Nexus, something ancient was moving. A deep mechanical sound rolled up through the earth once, twice, and then a third time.
On the map, the seven points connected into a circle. Six blue lights glowed, while the seventh stayed dark, until a final line appeared.
SEVENTH NODE: AWAKE.
Aren stared at the display. "...We didn’t activate it."
"No," Gabriel said, her expression tight.
Kai looked at the floor. Something was rising from below, and he could feel it. It wasn’t a monster or an army. It was something far larger, something that had been waiting.
"Then what activated it?" Lily whispered.
The answer appeared on the ancient display.
EXTERNAL TRIGGER DETECTED.
Kai’s eyes narrowed as the seventh point finally lit.
And beneath Nexus, a door began to open.
