Adrian Law thought of that mottled piece of paper and the half-empty bottle of sleeping pills, his heart felt as if it had been pierced by thousands of needles.

Blood flowed incessantly.

A dense pain attacked, impossible to conceal.

He looked at Frank Law’s stern and sharp face, and felt an added layer of disappointment in his heart.

"The record of the sleeping pills can be traced, after so many years, who knows if the hospital system can still find it. If you’re interested, investigate it yourself."

...

In this world, the strongest, bravest, and most beautiful woman Adrian Law had ever seen was actually Susan Roswell.

He couldn’t imagine how Susan Roswell faced her husband’s betrayal, and her own deep depression, yet could still laugh and talk gracefully with business competitors, and even entertain her children with warm and healing jokes.

Adrian Law remembered his mother’s face.

As brilliant and bright as the sun.

Even her smile seemed untouched by dust.

But Adrian Law never thought that such a strong and brave mother was actually already riddled with wounds and in dire straits behind the scenes, not needing any other backstage manipulator to succumb to depression.

Because Adrian Law also discovered a bottle of fast-acting heart-relief pills in Susan Roswell’s medication.

...

The mother had no heart disease, and logically, unlike those who are elderly, she didn’t need such medication to maintain emotional stability.

Adrian Law understood it was all Frank Law’s sins.

Yet in the end, it only made the mother swallow this bitter fruit alone.

Over the years, Frank Law always said that the person he loved most was his mother, saying that if she hadn’t left, he would never marry another woman in this life.

Yet, before Susan Roswell’s hundred-day anniversary, he married Mabel Keaton.

And even held a grand banquet.

How ironic life is?

The person who once pledged undying love to you can so easily hurt you deeper, pretending in every past moment that you were his greatest love, an unforgettable passion.

Laughable...

...

Adrian Law’s face was icy as he looked at Frank Law’s features, so similar to his own, feeling an inexplicable revulsion.

"Father, if you feel even a slight guilt towards mother, for the rest of your life, never say you love her again."

"This kind of love is too cheap, too hypocritical!"

From beginning to end, the only person Frank Law truly loved was himself.

...

Frank Law staggered back a couple of steps.

Many past images flashed through his mind, although time had drifted far, every smile and frown of Susan Roswell engraved itself on his heart like a stone, her cold and resolute face seeming to reappear in his mind.

——"You’re not leaving the bedroom, right? Fine, then I’ll go. From now on, you’ll never touch me again with a single finger."

——"I’m not sharing my man’s affections with another woman. If you want a divorce, feel free to do so. But Frank Law, our life together, it’s over."

Frank Law thought Susan Roswell was merely stubbornly expressing her insistence.

After all, any wealthy woman just finding out her husband was spending nights elsewhere would throw a tantrum.

But unexpectedly, since then, Susan Roswell never allowed him to touch her at all.

Frank Law grew to resent her, but also found himself helpless against Susan Roswell.

He hadn’t imagined that she would hire a private detective to film "indecent" footage of him and his lovers, as he was hurt by Susan Roswell’s attitude, and they didn’t even draw the curtains during those encounters in a public setting.

Though thrilling, thinking back, it left an infinitely empty feeling.

At that time, Frank Law wanted to divorce Susan Roswell in a fit of rage, but seeing her becoming more exquisite and coldly alluring, he couldn’t let go.

Though he had many women in his life, none were as stunning as Susan Roswell.

Other women might have their own charms, but next to her, they seemed to pale in comparison, whether in looks or bearing.

With the evidence Susan Roswell held, plus her own allure, Frank Law felt an intense mix of love and hatred.

Later, Susan Roswell deftly took advantage of her position as the Law Family’s matriarch, carving out a place for herself in the business world.

Frank Law, a man with strong masculine pride, didn’t want his woman to be in the spotlight.

Yet with Susan Roswell, he was powerless, watching as she thrived more and more.

Sometimes, in a daze, Frank Law would wonder.

——If Susan Roswell hadn’t met him, perhaps she would have been brighter, more radiant.

At the very least, she wouldn’t have had to guard an empty home alone.

Frank Law found it strange. A woman as young and beautiful as Susan Roswell, even after marriage, with a husband like him, surely wouldn’t lack admirers.

Frank Law worried she might be unfaithful, so he hired detectives to investigate her.

Surprisingly, Susan Roswell directly confronted him, tossing the detective’s camera before him with a cold smile.

——"Do you really think everyone is as low as you?"

She indeed had no plans to hang herself on one tree, but at least, before officially splitting from Frank Law, her principles wouldn’t allow her to cross that line.

This, too, was for the sake of Nancy Law and Adrian Law, her children.

Society is harsh with women, even though Frank Law was the one who erred first, if Susan Roswell ever had any ambiguous ties with another, it would only bring shame to her and her children, while Frank Law would merely be teased about it.

...

Thinking of the past, Frank Law felt a similar pain in his heart.

He couldn’t imagine how someone severely depressed could seamlessly navigate the business world, smile calmly at people, and still play with her children at home.

At the very least, Frank Law had never seen it.

But Susan Roswell accomplished it.

Out of the lingering admiration for his first love, he finally felt utterly embarrassed.

"I’m sorry, Adrian, I didn’t know at the time. Back then, your mother never wanted to see me..."

"Ha..."

Adrian Law was no longer willing to waste words on this person.

He cast a cold glance at Frank Law and then chose to stride up the stairs, decisively leaving.

Upstairs, in Stacy Summers’ bedroom, Cecilia Vaughn was chatting with the elder, laughter echoing from inside.

Hearing the laughter outside the door, Adrian Law’s aching heart finally eased a little.

Just as Cecilia Vaughn planned to open the door for something, she saw Adrian Law standing forlornly at the doorway.

"Adrian, what’s wrong?... Hmm..."

Before she could finish, she was suddenly enveloped in a man’s embrace.

Tightly, as if to embed her in his bones.

"Cecilia, don’t leave me."
