Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride
Chapter 1688 - 1662: Wherever Your Eyes Rest, There Lies Eternity—Who Else Have You Told
In the small courtyard of Violet Zimmerman’s residence, Daxton Lancaster stood with his hands behind his back, silhouetted against the light. His gray wool coat was draped over his shoulders, and in the gloomy night, Daxton’s expression was colder than the darkness.
Opposite him, Blair Williams continued to babble incessantly with her petty report. The foolish woman hadn’t noticed how unpleasant Daxton’s expression was.
After reporting Violet Zimmerman’s nightly visits to Joseph Lancaster’s residence, Blair adopted a sycophantic demeanor, seemingly awaiting praise from the Family Head.
"Who else have you told about this?" Daxton asked expressionlessly.
Blair maintained her sycophantic manner, saying, "Family Head, I wouldn’t dare speak carelessly about such a matter. Besides you, I haven’t told anyone."
Daxton observed that she didn’t seem to be lying, and, moreover, a servant wouldn’t dare deceive him.
"Hmm," Joseph responded with little emotion, uttering only a single "hmm."
Blair was somewhat perplexed. She had explained it so clearly; was the Family Head not at all upset? Or was it because the Second Young Master was his direct brother, that the Family Head trusted him?
But the relationship between the Second Young Master and the Madam was indeed suspicious. "Family Head, don’t you think there’s something odd between the Madam and the Second Young Master?"
In a moment of urgency, Blair directly voiced her question.
The murky night effectively shrouded the darkness on Daxton’s face. The gaunt man stood in the center of the courtyard, yet his strong presence remained unaffected.
Staring at the eager servant, he asked expressionlessly, "What’s so odd?"
Blair didn’t notice the brewing tension between Daxton’s brows, so she leaned in and lowered her voice, "Family Head, every time the Madam stays in the Second Young Master’s room for a long time, and with the door closed."
"Have you gone up to take a look?" Daxton asked, calmly.
Blair shook her head sheepishly, "I wouldn’t dare. I only heard the sound of the door closing from downstairs."
Daxton narrowed his eyes slightly, coldly saying, "Understood, go back to your work for now."
Seeing Daxton turn to return to the villa, Blair hurriedly called out, "Family Head, considering the important matter I’ve reported to you, shouldn’t I receive a reward?"
Daxton...
Slowly turned his head, his hands still clasped behind him, looking at Blair’s greedy expression while his eyes tightened in a dangerous manner.
"I’ll personally bring it to you tomorrow morning."
"Thank you, thank you, Family Head. I’ll return now and leave you to rest," Blair thanked him, nodding and bowing, not turning away until Daxton entered his residence, then headed towards Joseph Lancaster’s quarters.
On the way, Blair was extremely joyful. Over the years, while working in Joseph’s house, she had taken plenty of good things home.
Joseph was easygoing and uncalculating; she had secretly taken a lot of fruit from the house, as well as the fine grains supplied to the servants each month.
She had even taken bed sheets, covers, and even bowls and chopsticks; whenever she went home to visit family during the holiday, she wouldn’t leave empty-handed.
Anticipating an upcoming windfall, Blair covered her mouth but couldn’t suppress a laugh, quickening her pace.
By this time, the TV commercials should be over, and she needed to hurry back to watch "Fearless."
Blair didn’t turn off the lights when she left, so seeing the light coming from the first floor of Joseph’s place from afar didn’t seem odd. She hummed the theme song of "Fearless" as she entered the small courtyard, pulling open the door and walking inside.
Blair was in such high spirits that she didn’t notice the man reclining on the sofa.
Turning to lock the door, she raised her head, only to see Joseph Lancaster giving her a smile that wasn’t quite a smile.
