Mr. CEO's Substitute Bride

Chapter 1569 - 1560: Where the Eye Falls, There Lies Eternity: Uncomfortable

The scene inside was almost too beautiful; Daxton Lancaster and Violet Zimmerman were sitting on the sofa, their heads leaning against each other. Daxton had one arm around Violet, the other resting gently on her lower abdomen, softly stroking it with an expression of tenderness.

Seeing a young man burst in, the couple both turned their heads to look over.

At the door, Joseph Lancaster had a string of candied haws on his shoulder and was carrying several nylon bags in his hands. Looking at the loving couple, he forgot to react.

It was hard to describe the feeling—did he come cheerfully and leave disappointed? Or was he doused with cold water?

In any case, seeing his brother and sister-in-law being intimate made Joseph Lancaster feel very uncomfortable.

It was as if a large stone was pressing on his chest—so heavy, it was suffocating.

Daxton Lancaster’s phoenix eyes tightened, a fleeting light passed through them, and quickly disappeared. Upon seeing his brother standing at the door, he smiled and said,

"Joseph is back. Come in quickly and close the door. It’s cold outside; don’t let your sister-in-law catch a cold."

"Oh," Joseph responded woodenly, stepping out of his shoes and walking in.

The servant waiting at the door closed it and then returned to their room.

Seeing her brother-in-law, Violet Zimmerman instinctively turned her face inward, not even knowing where to look.

Daxton observed her reaction fully, yet his expression did not show any abnormality. He glanced at the fruits Joseph was holding and smiled, saying,

"Did you buy these for your sister-in-law?"

"Yes." Joseph placed the nylon bags on the coffee table in front of them, then stepped back, still holding the candied haws on his shoulder, his head slightly bowed, with an indifferent expression on his face.

Daxton glanced at his brother’s complexion without a trace and continued smiling, "Weren’t the candied haws for your sister-in-law?"

"Oh, they were—for her. We live far away, and it’s not easy to shop, so I bought more."

Joseph placed the skewer of candied haws on the ground and stepped back again. He did not even glance at the couple as he spoke, standing opposite them with his hands awkwardly rubbing against his thighs.

Seeing his brother’s uneasy demeanor, Daxton continued without a change in tone, "You bought so many things; you haven’t had dinner, have you?"

"No." At this moment, Joseph seemed like a child caught doing something wrong by an adult, standing with his head down in front of his brother and sister-in-law.

Violet Zimmerman also felt uncomfortable, after all...her brother-in-law was the father of her unborn child. She pursed her lips, about to excuse herself to rest in her room, but then heard Daxton say, "Violet, go make something for Joseph to eat. He loves eating Alcohol Fermented Meatballs."

Violet...

Staring at Daxton dazedly, she did not respond for quite a while.

Joseph was the same; the young man’s phoenix eyes were full of surprise as he looked at his brother.

After making the Alcohol Fermented Meatballs, Violet went back to her room, leaving just the two brothers in the large downstairs space.

The skewer of candied haws was already ordered to be wrapped in a bag and placed in the courtyard; on the coffee table, apples, oranges, and large white pears were piled like a small mountain.

The two brothers sat on the same sofa, Joseph buried his head in eating the Alcohol Fermented Meatballs, feeling a mix of emotions in his heart.

Back then...it was with this excuse that his sister-in-law had... and then...

"Joseph, do you have any classmates at school you get along well with?" Daxton asked, sitting sideways at the edge of the sofa, one hand lightly patting the armrest.

Hearing his brother’s question, Joseph almost put a meatball in his mouth before it dropped back with a splash, splattering soup onto his face.
