Chapter 1602: Breaking Barriers: The Second Trial (5)

“…I guess it shouldn’t come as a surprise at this point.”

As he prepared the next set of beams Ataraxia had to face, Aeramis could not help but look at the current sight with a slightly wry smile on his face, his mind briefly thinking back to how the young man fared in the inheritance thus far.

Back when the young man was attempting the previous trial for the first time, it already astounded him that someone who had chosen the hardest path of his inheritance would able to grasp the mechanics of the first trial that easily.

After all, the mechanics he had come up with for that trial was something he had dedicated at least a few years in order to perfect.

Yet, not only did Ataraxia reach the minimum threshold necessary to proceed on his first try, he had even figured a weakness he could exploit within the trial’s mechanics, allowing him to reach the limit of the first trial with incredible ease.

Unsurprisingly, the fact that the young man was able to take immense advantage of the mechanics’ weakness prompted Aeramis to think that the former had a knack for tests that relied more on the mental side of things.

With that, the man had a strong feeling that the young man would perform oppositely in this current trial, considering that its mechanics formed a stark contrast to the mind games that plagued the first trial.

However, contrary to the expectations he had for Ataraxia, the young man instead showed great control over every inch of his body, showcasing a level of dexterity and agility that even he felt he wouldn’t be able to achieve if he were at the young man’s level.

Though it wasn’t obvious during the first few sets, by the time Ataraxia got to sets that involved around seven beams whizzing by at the same time, Aeramis had pretty much confirmed that the young man was talented in both the physical and mental field.

“On one hand, it makes me feel sorry for the others that entered the inheritance at the same time as him,” murmured the man to himself, the wry smile on his face deepening as he took a moment to take a look at how the others were faring.

Thanks to the fact that all of them knew not to bite off more than they could chew, it went without saying that all of the other inheritors were doing well in their respective inheritances, showing a level of competence that Aeramis expected from the younger generation.

Then again, if he were to compare it to the level of competence Ataraxia was showing right now…

’Yeah, there’s no point talking about it,’ thought Aeramis to himself, discarding all thoughts regarding the topic without hesitation as he continued to watch Ataraxia clear more of the sets.

’In any case, I’m quite unfortunate that I’ve found someone who’s talented enough to possibly inherit most of my abilities.’

As this thought popped up in his mind, the wry smile that previously adorned the man’s face slowly morphed into a genuine smile.

’At the very least, the effort I’ve exerted to get to where I am hasn’t been in vain.’

’Especially now that he’s showing promise that he could take the step I couldn’t.’

’Huh.’

’Easier than I thought.’

Watching as a set of nine blue beams appeared in his field of vision, Ataraxia swiftly drafted a course of action in his mind as he counted down the seconds to their transformation.

Whoosh!

Then, at the exact moment those blue beams disappeared, the young man went ahead and moved his body accordingly, easily dodging all of the red beams that threatened to beat him to an inch of his life.

’Whew.’ Letting out a faint sigh of relief after successfully dodging the beams, Ataraxia took a brief moment to tally his progress through the trial. ’Only five more sets left before reaching 200 points.’

Back when the second trial was starting out with its first few sets, the young man was led to believe that all of the beams that he would have to face every set had a trajectory that would make contact with him.

Because of that, he paid a bit more attention to where the blue beams would make contact, allowing him to greatly reduce the risk that came with dodging such dangerous beams.

Though, as more beams were added the further he got into the trial, the young man eventually realized that his initial thoughts on the beams’ trajectories were wrong, noticing that the beams he had to face would actually make contact with him around 60% of the time.

Of course, there were still times when the set of beams he had to dodge all had its beams move at a trajectory that would make contact with his body.

However, with the knowledge that the amount of beams he had to face per set was actually more likely to be 40% less than what was stated, the young man was able to reduce the energy he spent while dodging every set, making sure to move in a way that was efficient as possible.

At the same time, the constant threat of the beams allowed him to greater understand the 5% boost the Extended Title had given to his movement and reaction speed.

According to his calculations, although his abilities in that area only went up by 5%, that increase already allowed him to increase the base maximum amount of beams he could dodge to 12.

And that was without factoring in the experience he had accumulated from dodging all the beams.

Because of that, the young man gained confidence that he’d be able to secure at least a grade of B in the second trial.

Though, if he were to push himself, he felt like it would even be possible for him to secure a grade of A.

After all, with the experience he had obtained from dodging the beams thus far, he felt confident that he’d be able to dodge around 20 or so beams if he pushed himself, which was around the number of beams he had to face by the time he got to the 800th set.

With that in mind, all he needed now was the will to persevere, as well as a little bit of luck shining down on his face.

As long as he had those, perhaps even reaching the limit of the second trial wouldn’t be a far-fetched goal.
