Chapter 1600: Breaking Barriers: The Second Trial (3)
“…Wait a second.”
Although Ataraxia had no need for preparations before tackling the second trial, the man’s explanation to obtain a higher score in the second trial caused him to pause for a bit, thinking that it would be better for him to sort his thoughts out before truly taking on the second trial.
After all, even a single lapse in judgment while dodging the beams would immediately render his efforts in clearing the inheritance thus far useless.
Of course, with Aeramis only giving him a brief overview on the goals he had to reach for the higher scores, the young man did not give the matter too much of a thought.
If anything, he only thought about how many beams he would have to face at the same time if he planned on aiming for those goals.
’If I were to aim for a grade of B, factoring in the fact that the number of beams I have to face increases by 1 every 25 sets I clear, I would have to face just a bit over 20 beams in order to do so.’
As this thought came to mind, the young man felt a hint of relief, considering that the number he’d just arrived at was the same number he had obtained back when he was still calculating the beams he would face before amassing a total of 200 points.
Naturally, with Aeramis clarifying that the scale at which the number of beams increased was far more lenient than he thought, Ataraxia felt at ease that he’d be able to clear the next trial if its difficulty was around the same ballpark.
’Then again, the chances of me reaching a grade of B would be very low,’ thought the young man, factoring into account the rate at which he adapted to the number of beams he would be facing.
’Even if I could ideally increase the number of beams I could dodge during the second trial by two, I’d still be nowhere near the number necessary to obtain that grade.’
’Much less the last two grades about that,’ he continued, a faint wry smile adorning his face.
Although having to avoid over 20 plus beams felt impossible to the average player, Ataraxia was confident that he could achieve that kind of standard as long as he accumulated enough experience.
Aside from that, he felt confident that he’d be able to achieve a similar feat if he were to ascend to the peak of Rank 5. After all, his stats at that time would give him not only finer control over his movements, but also greater speed in coming up with paths that would allow him to dodge more beams.
Unfortunately, with the limitations that had been set in place for both him and Valyr, it would take a long while before the two of them could reach that level, especially with their XP costs now being multiplied by a factor of 50.
Then again, compared to the 20 or so beams he would have to face if he aimed to obtain a grade of B, that amount was still nothing compared to the 35 or so beams he needed to face for the grade after that, or the 40 or so beams he needed to face to reach the trial’s limits.
’Well, it doesn’t hurt to give it a shot,’ thought Ataraxia to himself by the time he reached the end of his current train of thought. ’After all, even if I fail to reach a grade of B, getting a score above 200 would probably still warrant an increase in the rewards I obtain at the end.’
With that in mind, the young man faintly let out a calming breath to compose himself, only to then inform Aeramis soon after that he was ready.
“Alright, then.” Though he was somewhat curious as to why the young man stood in place with his eyes closed for quite some time, the man decided not to ask more about it.
“Head to the spot I previously stood on.”
Briefly glancing at the area where Aeramis was pointing, Ataraxia nodded in response as he slowly made his way to where the former stood for his earlier demonstration.
Once there, he used the time before the start of the trial as an opportunity to familiarize himself with the placement of the lasers once more.
Though, considering that all of the lasers had a trajectory that could more or less reach where he stood if Aeramis wanted, the young man decided not to think such thoughts any further, instead focusing all of his attention on the task at hand.
“Oh, right.” However, just as Ataraxia thought that the second trial would begin soon enough, the man instead glanced at him for a bit with a pensive expression, only for the latter to recall something important not long after.
“With how quick you were in clearing the first trial to its utmost limits, it slipped from my mind that I had a special reward reserved for those who achieved such a feat.”
Whoosh!
As these words left Aeramis’ mouth, the man went ahead and brought up a screen in front of him, only to then interact with it for a bit before sending a small strand of energy towards the young man.
“Although this may not be much compared to the rewards you’ll obtain at the end, I’m certain that it would offer you a bit of assistance in the current trial.”
Ding!
Just as Ataraxia was about to ask him what he meant by his earlier words, that question was immediately answered by the notification he had just received, as well as the additional few words the man said to him after receiving that notification.
Seeing as the second trial wasn’t going to start any time soon, the young man decided to take a look at what kind of reward the man had sent to him.
’A title?’
Briefly glancing at the name of the title he had just received from Aeramis, Ataraxia thought that the title most likely had an effect that increased his AGI and DEX stat or something. After all, increasing both stats would indeed improve his chances at the second trial.
Though, once he took a look at the title’s description in detail, it did not take long for the young man to find out that his initial thoughts…
Couldn’t be any further from the truth.
