  7. Chapter 373

“That witch dares to kill me? Her?” Angelu sneered.

Although he talked tough, a hint of wariness still lingered deep in his eyes.

He studied Ansu once again.

Advancing to a high-tier mage in six months meant reaching the Saint Tier was only a matter of time. Not to mention, this kid had single-handedly created a brand-new magic system...

“If what you say is true, then you really are a...”

“...magic genius.”

“A genius among geniuses.”

He would even believe it if someone said this kid was chosen by the gods...

“Wait!” Barcas suddenly interrupted his thoughts.

He gave Angelu a look and turned toward a quiet corner.

“Come with me.”

The two walked to the end of the balcony. Barcas immediately set up a soundproofing barrier, his gloomy gaze sweeping over Ansu's back.

“What do you mean just now?” He frowned. “He's here to surrender, not to apply for a job at your academy. If what he says is true, I need to pry information out of him on how to deal with the Echoes of Truth and Celia. And—”

He couldn't suppress his anger whenever he thought about this.

“And that treasure left behind by our demon ancestors! We must take it back from the cult!”

“That doesn't conflict with our goals,” Angelu said dismissively.

Barcas said in a deep voice, “What I suspect most right now is whether these two are playing a double game. Did this guy deliberately run to my place to seek shelter just to lure Celia here, and then work with her from the inside out...?”

“That possibility can't be ruled out,” Angelu agreed. “So, what do you plan to do?”

“I don't think there's any need to waste our breath on him.” Barcas sneered. “Killing him directly is the safest option. We shouldn't let the enemy lead us by the nose.”

Angelu paused.

Barcas continued, “Before coming, I already made arrangements. Four of the Seven Demon Generals under my command are currently in the palace. In a moment, as soon as I give the order...”

“No!” Angelu immediately shook his head, giving him a reassuring look. “With us here, what are you afraid of? If something really happens, I'll just take this kid back to the City of a Thousand Stars. There's no way Celia can breach that place, right?”

He laughed, his eyes glinting with calculation. “No matter what schemes and tricks he's hiding, they won't work in the City of a Thousand Stars. I'd like to see what tricks this kid dares to play!”

Ansu leaned back against the sofa, watching them whispering in the corner, and glanced at the time.

Could you two speed things up?

He was truly terrified that Celia would come charging in at any moment...

Naturally, what he feared most was exactly what happened.

A dark shadow suddenly materialized from the corridor's shadows. It was a demon scout. He rushed forward, his voice tight with panic.

“This bad, Lord Barcas!”

“That Ash Witch, Celia, is attacking!”

“What?!” Barcas and Angelu's faces paled simultaneously.

Barcas whipped his head around to glare at Ansu, his expression incredibly dark.

How could that witch be so fast? Could this guy really have lured her here on purpose?

The demon scout quickly added, “She suddenly tore open space and dropped from the sky, instantly smashing through our city guard's main camp! She's tearing her way toward the palace right now! The witch is like a lunatic—we can't stop her!!”

Just as he finished speaking, a faint tremor rumbled from the distance, causing the balcony's railings to vibrate.

Ansu's heart skipped a beat.

He was genuinely panicking now.

How had Celia caught up so fast?

He had clearly locked everything Celia had ever given him inside the 【Warehouse】. In theory, there was no way she could have tracked him!

Besides, who would have guessed he would suddenly flee to Barcas's territory?

“That witch is far too arrogant! I'll go deal with her!” Angelu roared in anger.

“Several of my colleagues from the City of a Thousand Stars left seclusion this time specifically to deal with her. She came at the perfect time. I will have my revenge today and slaughter her with my own hands!”

“No,” Barcas said, casting a cool glance at him. “Don't go to your death.”

“But I have so many of my fellow brothers and apprentices here! How can our grand Radial Magic Academy be afraid of a single Ash Witch?” Angelu spat in frustration.

Barcas didn't bother arguing with him. He dismissed the soundproofing barrier, walked back to the seating area, and fixed his gaze on Ansu once more.

“No matter what your scheme is, and no matter what you want to do, since you delivered yourself to our doorstep, you're coming with us.”

“Where to?” Ansu already knew the answer.

In this world, perhaps the only place capable of keeping Celia at bay was that legendary sanctuary of magic, the City of a Thousand Stars.

An academic sanctuary hidden within a spatial rift, which even the Demon Calamity War of the past had failed to shake.

“To the great City of a Thousand Stars, of course—specifically, the Radial Magic Academy,” Angelu said, lifting his chin with immense pride. He then sneered, “Follow me!”

...

The three arrived at the palace's central courtyard. Angelu immediately activated a teleportation circle, and a magical glow enveloped both Ansu and Barcas.

After a brief channeling period, the light flashed, and a wave of freezing cold rushed over them.

Ansu steadied himself. Looking up, he saw snow-capped mountains stretching all the way to the horizon.

The Radial Mountains.

It lay across the western border of the Empire, serving as the natural boundary between Novalon and the western nations. It was the highest range on the continent, often referred to as the "Roof of the World."

Legend had it that the magic academy was hidden deep within these desolate mountains, but its true location was far more elusive than rumors suggested. Years ago, after a war broke out between the academy and the Norn Empire, the academy had concealed itself within a spatial rift, vanishing from the world entirely.

Ansu noticed that Angelu beside him had begun casting once more.

He chanted obscure ancient words, tracing complex patterns in the air with his hands as his mage robes billowed in the wind.

The moment the incantation ended, the entire mountain range seemed to respond. From the heavens to the earth, a massive spatial rift slowly tore open, resembling a magnificent, colossal gateway.

Ansu watched thoughtfully.

This technique seemed to share the same origin as the 【Void Corridor】 he had mastered; both carved out domains within the seams of the physical realm. However, the scale of the academy's rift was simply absurd.

“Let's go,” Angelu said, taking the first step.

Barcas followed closely behind with a calm expression, clearly not a first-time visitor.

Ansu suppressed his astonishment and followed them inside. However, not long after stepping through, his brows furrowed.

The air here was thick with an unbearable, stagnant dampness, as if they had walked into a cluttered basement that hadn't been ventilated in decades.

What concerned him even more was the magic pollution permeating the atmosphere. Its concentration was so high that it rivaled the Filthy Heart in the South. Casting spells carelessly in an environment like this would likely trigger a swift and severe backlash.

It took Ansu a moment to adjust before he began examining his surroundings.

Deprived of sunlight, clusters of Gothic spires stood under a dismal, gray sky, silent and depressing. The magical illumination came from a turbid, sickly light source, flickering weakly against the mottled stone walls. Flocks of crows perched atop the spires, letting out hoarse, discordant caws.

A few black-robed figures whispered to each other not far away, their hoods pulled low. From behind, they looked perfectly normal.

But as they drew closer, Ansu looked closer and realized that where legs and feet should have emerged from beneath their robes, several writhing black tentacles were coiled instead.

“Professor Avery,” Angelu greeted one of them.

The figure slowly turned around. His face had completely warped into a grotesque mass of flesh, his original features utterly unrecognizable.

Angelu seemed completely used to this. Ansu, however, couldn't help but steal another glance at the bald mage beside him, thinking that although Angelu looked like a boiled egg, he was still far easier on the eyes than the figures they had just passed.

It seemed the rumors were true. Under the influence of the God of Clamor and Filth, the magic academy had long since descended into collective madness, devolving into a bizarre, unspeakable realm of horror.

Ansu quietly calculated his options.

This trip might not only resolve the curse, but also present a perfect opportunity to probe the secrets of both the false god and the City of a Thousand Stars.

A win-win, really.

Assuming, of course, that the City of a Thousand Stars could actually hold off the rampaging Celia.
