- Chapter 372
Ansu carefully scanned the street corners and alleys, quietly sensing the fluctuations of mana for a long time.
Only after confirming that Celia had indeed not pursued him did he finally let out a sigh of relief...
Time was pressing; he had to move quickly.
Ansu walked along the bustling main street of the City of Lenaya. Palm trees swayed gently, and the marketplace was lively and crowded. At least here, there was not a single sign of the impending disaster.
He quickly mapped out the demon army's sphere of influence in his mind.
First was the land beneath his feet.
Lenaya was an archipelago nation made up of numerous city-states. It was an important trading hub and monopolized the core shipping lanes running south from the northern continent. Any merchant caravan wishing to travel to the south continent to mine resources or transport slaves had to pass through these islands.
Currently, the royal family of Lenaya had been sidelined by Barcas, and part of the demon army's command structure was hidden deep within the Royal Capital.
By interfering in maritime trade, they had completely infiltrated both the shipping lanes to Elune and the trade routes to the western nations of the continent.
Furthermore...The demon army had also been secretly expanding in the Empire's northern territory and the vast snowfields even further north. However, due to the interference of himself and Freya, the demons' operations in the North had completely collapsed.
In the mountainous kingdom to the west of the Novalon Empire, the Iron Hill Kingdom, there was also a large force of demon mercenaries stationed there by Barcas.
It could be said that without Ansu's interference, Barcas would have nearly completed his three-sided encirclement of the Novalon Empire, waiting only for disaster and opportunity to strike before launching a full-scale invasion.
Thinking of this, Ansu had to force himself to suppress a smile.
His presence had changed far more than just this. After all, there were supposed to be two major villain factions.
Barcas's demon army was the main invading force, grand and imposing. The World Ending Witch's cult was small in number but exceptionally elite; the Echoes of Truth went around causing trouble everywhere, being incredibly fanatic and evil.
Yet, after his “operations,” one of the major villains had directly become his wife...
As for the other major villain, he had essentially turned into a “Master of Poaching” who constantly supplied Ansu with talent and equipment. The demons' conspiracies were foiled at every turn, and their encirclement was torn to shreds.
As a Chosen One, he was actually doing quite a competent job...
Ansu suppressed his stray thoughts. Not even five minutes after teleporting here, he keenly detected several gazes landing on him.
This place was crawling with demon informants. A strange mage suddenly teleporting here out of thin air would definitely be reported immediately.
He quickly checked the timeline.
It was currently 2:20 PM on October 16.
At 10:35 AM on October 19, Professor Duncan would be the first to die from the curse.
At 12:14 AM on October 20, Celia would die.
Only three days left.
He could no longer casually start a 100-hour simulation like before. That would cost 100 points each time. He could only gamble once. If he failed, all would be lost, with no chance of recovery.
He had to take a risk.
He would drag things out until the early hours of October 19, the very day the curse would erupt, and then start a 10-hour simulation to verify the results.
The retention time for a 10-hour simulation was 12 hours. Whether Professor Duncan and the elders could make it through, and whether Celia could survive—he would be able to witness it all with his own eyes.
As he pondered, the noise on both sides of the street suddenly quieted down.
A squad of fully armed city guards rushed over, surrounding him in the center.
The leader wore a dark hood, deliberately hiding his face in the shadows to conceal his demonic features.
Ansu stared at him. The man's gaze was filled with tension and wariness.
Despite being the leader, he stood at the very outer edge of the circle of soldiers, as if... he wished he could be as far away from Ansu as possible?
“Are you... Ansu? Ansu Morris?”
The demon asked in a cold voice.
“It is I,” Ansu nodded, taking half a step forward. “May I ask who you are...”
Before he could finish, the demon took a giant step backward.
The movement was so abrupt that the human soldiers around him turned their heads, unable to understand why their commander was reacting so dramatically.
Ansu understood instantly.
It seemed the rumors of him sacrificing an entire force of demon mercenaries in the ancient ruins had already spread throughout the demon race.
So, his fearsome reputation among them was actually quite a deterrent?
“Seize him! Quickly, seize him!”
The demon seemed to finally find his courage and suddenly roared. The surrounding soldiers immediately gripped their weapons and swarmed forward.
“Alright, alright,” Ansu waved his hand dismissively, his tone perfectly calm. “No need to trouble yourselves. I surrender.”
Once those words were spoken, everyone present froze.
Ansu looked at the stunned demon officer and frowned.
“Did you not hear me? Hurry up and take me to see your master, Barcas.”
...
The palace of Lenaya was situated on the highest hill in the center of the royal city, offering a sweeping view where the sea met the sky in the distance.
Sea breezes swept across the balcony. Ansu sat on an elegant sofa meant for distinguished guests, while steam rose from a white porcelain teacup on the coffee table.
He slowly lifted the teacup, blew on the steam, but did not drink. He simply gazed leisurely at the white sails dotting the sea, waiting for Barcas to appear.
Soon, hurried footsteps echoed down the corridor.
Ansu turned to look. Several demons escorted a tall, thin figure walking briskly toward him—it was indeed the demon leader, Barcas.
Barcas's gaze was exceptionally complex. He had even repeatedly verified the news on his way here. Only now, standing before Ansu, was he finally convinced...
This mortal enemy, who had foiled his plans time and time again, had actually surrendered on his own accord?
And had even demanded to see him by name?
“Ansu... Morris,” Barcas deliberately kept a safe distance from him, frowning as he watched his every move. “What on earth are you planning? What is your conspiracy?”
“It is not a conspiracy, but an open strategy,” Ansu set down his teacup, his tone candid. “Celia and I have had a falling out.”
“What?” Barcas was stunned for a moment before reacting, his expression growing even stranger. “The two of you... actually had a falling out? Aren't you her most trusted confidant?”
“More than just a confidant,” Ansu sighed, his gaze drifting back to the distant sea. “Our relationship was much closer than you think...”
Barcas's eyebrows twitched. “So... you broke up?”
“Why else would I run to your place?” Ansu let out a bitter laugh, seemingly recalling something as a trace of lingering fear crept into his voice. “I believe you must have heard how terrible that witch's personality is. She has absolutely no moral compass of a normal person; she is a completely uncontrollable lunatic...”
“I really couldn't take it anymore. If I stayed by that crazy woman's side any longer, the next one to die would definitely be me! I have no desire to go mad with her...”
“I have indeed heard of it...” Barcas rubbed his temples, speechless. For a moment, he did not know what to say, finding the entire situation ridiculously absurd.
Ansu glanced at him and continued to sigh.
“Ah, women...”
“Ah, witches...”
“Enough! I did not come here to listen to you vent,” Barcas's face turned cold, a murderous intent surging in his eyes. “I have no interest in your petty relationship drama. If you truly surrendered to me as you told my subordinates, then show me some sincerity.”
“Otherwise...”
“I will drag you right back to Celia this instant. I am very curious to see what fate awaits a traitor. Perhaps I will get to witness the longest and most agonizing death in this world.”
Ansu immediately put on a panicked expression, instantly growing anxious.
“No, no, no!”
“Lord Barcas! Please, whatever you do, do not send me back! I have come to join you with absolute sincerity!”
Barcas glanced at the high-level demons behind him, who were exchanging bewildered looks, and then looked back at Ansu, waiting for him to continue.
“Of course I brought sincerity—immense sincerity,” Ansu sat up straight, his tone turning solemn. “As long as the demons are willing to shelter me, I will offer my greatest value.”
“What value?” Barcas raised an eyebrow.
Instead of answering directly, Ansu looked toward the shadows deep in the corridor.
A very faint fluctuation of mana was hidden there; someone had been eavesdropping since the beginning.
Raising his voice toward the shadows, he said, “My greatest value, of course, lies in my academic worth. Since I was able to create a formula like the 【Ring of Pure Protection】 that even the God of Magic is wary of, I can naturally create more things capable of changing the world.”
Ansu paused, then added:
“Oh, by the way, I should be the fastest person in the history of magic to advance to a high-tier mage.
“How fast, exactly? The first time I ever studied magic was at my home in Benalu City. That was only back in April of this year.”
“April?” The person in the shadows could finally hold back no longer. A bald man wearing mage robes stepped forward. It was indeed Angelu, the Saint Tier mage of the City of a Thousand Stars.
He first exchanged a glance with Barcas, then stared at Ansu, his voice thick with disbelief.
“Is what you said true? April of this year? It has only been a little over six months since then?!”
“Absolutely true. If you do not believe me, go ask Celia!” Ansu said, then added as if suddenly remembering something, “Though you had better not provoke her right now. She hates me to death. If she finds me, she will definitely kill me, and she won't let any of you who get close off the hook either.”
