Chapter 21: Crystal Pavilion

Lucas stood in front of the full-length mirror in the guest bathroom and adjusted his silk tie.

The suit fit him like a layer of modern armor.

He did not look like a man who had been facing eviction just days ago.

He looked like an elite who belonged in the highest circles of the financial district.

He took a slow breath and checked his reflection. He needed to be flawless tonight.

The charity gala was the battlefield where Victoria Sterling and Camilla Verman were scheduled to collide.

He was the double agent standing right in the crossfire.

Camilla believed he was her newly loyal partner who had sacrificed a massive corporate payday just to be with her.

Victoria believed he was her dedicated spy currently gathering intelligence from the enemy camp.

If either of them discovered the truth, his life was over.

A sharp knock sounded at the bathroom door.

"The car is waiting downstairs," Camilla called out.

Lucas opened the door and his breath caught in his throat.

Camilla stood in the hallway wearing a floor-length emerald gown.

The silk fabric clung to every curve and featured a daring slit that traveled high up her thigh.

The color perfectly matched her piercing green eyes. She wore a delicate diamond necklace that rested against her collarbone and her dark hair was swept over one shoulder.

She looked like a queen preparing to inspect her conquered territories.

"You look stunning," Lucas said. He did not have to fake the genuine admiration in his voice.

Camilla offered a soft and dangerous smile. She closed the distance between them and reached up to adjust the lapel of his jacket.

The dynamic between them had fundamentally shifted since the interruption on the marble coffee table. The corporate hostility was gone.

In its place was a heavy, possessive heat.

"We have a narrative to sell tonight," Camilla murmured while smoothing the wool fabric. "My board of directors will be watching us like hawks. The financial press will be looking for any sign of weakness. I need you sharp."

"I am always sharp," Lucas replied.

He offered her his arm. Camilla looped her hand through it and they walked toward the private elevator.

The ride to the Crystal Pavilion was quiet.

The luxury town car navigated the busy city streets while Camilla reviewed a guest list on her tablet.

Lucas used the downtime to mentally open the System interface. He had twelve hundred Acquisition Points sitting in his bank.

He decided to save them. The night was going to be unpredictable and he needed an emergency reserve in case everything fell apart.

The car pulled up to the grand entrance of the Crystal Pavilion.

The venue was a massive glass-domed structure situated near the waterfront. A red carpet stretched from the curb to the brass doors.

A swarm of photographers and journalists pressed against the velvet ropes. The flash of camera bulbs lit up the autumn night like strobe lights.

Lucas stepped out of the vehicle first. He buttoned his jacket with one hand and turned back to offer his hand to Camilla.

She placed her palm in his and stepped onto the curb.

The paparazzi erupted. The shouting voices blended into a chaotic wall of noise as reporters hurled questions about the sudden engagement and her real estate empire.

Lucas did not flinch. His Somatic Composure kept his posture relaxed and his expression pleasantly neutral.

He placed his hand firmly on the small of Camilla’s back.

He guided her up the red carpet with the protective confidence of a man who was used to the spotlight.

Camilla leaned into his touch. She offered the cameras a radiant smile but kept her pace steady. They bypassed the shouting reporters and stepped through the heavy brass doors.

The noise of the street vanished.

The interior of the Crystal Pavilion was a monument to excessive wealth. Massive crystal chandeliers hung from the vaulted glass ceiling.

Waiters in pristine white tuxedos carried silver trays of vintage champagne through a sea of the city’s most powerful elite.

Soft classical music played from a string quartet situated on a raised balcony.

"First hurdle cleared," Camilla whispered as she took a flute of champagne from a passing tray. She handed one to Lucas. "Now comes the real test. Harrison is walking this way."

Lucas turned his head. An older man with silver hair and a rigid posture was weaving through the crowd toward them.

Harrison was the lead investor on Camilla’s board of directors. He was the man who had demanded she stabilize her public image.

"Camilla," Harrison greeted her with a polite nod. His sharp eyes immediately shifted to Lucas. "I see the rumors from the morning press briefing were accurate."

"Harrison," Camilla said smoothly. "Allow me to introduce Lucas Vintage. Lucas, this is Harrison, the man who ensures my development projects stay properly funded."

Lucas extended his hand. "A pleasure to meet you, sir."

Harrison shook his hand. His grip was firm and testing. "A wealth management consultant. You look a bit young to be handling international portfolios, Mr. Vintage. Which firm did you say you started with?"

It was a blatant interrogation. Harrison was trying to find a crack in something.

Lucas activated his Micro-Motive Perception. The blue overlay washed over the older investor.

Harrison was not acting out of malice. He was acting out of fiscal protection.

He viewed Camilla as a high-yield asset and he wanted to make sure this new partner was not a liability.

"I prefer to operate independently," Lucas answered. He laced his voice with the persuasive resonance of his Silver Tongue skill.

"Large firms tend to get bogged down in bureaucratic oversight. When you are managing sovereign wealth or distressed assets, agility is more valuable than a legacy letterhead. I am sure a man with your diverse portfolio understands the value of moving quietly."

Harrison paused. The subtle use of high-tier financial phrasing caught him off guard.

He expected a pretty face with empty words. He did not expect a calculated response that perfectly mirrored his own business philosophy.

"Agility is certainly valuable," Harrison conceded. The rigid tension in his shoulders relaxed slightly. "I read you were advising a seller during one of Camilla’s recent acquisitions. You must be quite stubborn to sit across a negotiation table from her and survive."

"I am," Lucas said with a charming smile. He glanced down at Camilla. "But some losses are worth the penalty."

Camilla laughed softly and rested her hand on Lucas’s chest. It was a flawless display of unity.

Harrison offered a genuine smile. "Well played, Mr. Vintage. Enjoy the evening, both of you. I expect to see those waterfront blueprints on Monday, Camilla."

The older investor nodded and walked away to rejoin his associates.

Camilla let out a quiet breath of relief. She looked up at Lucas with bright eyes. "You handled him perfectly. He usually spends twenty minutes interrogating my contractors."

"I told you I was good at this," Lucas said.

A sudden shift in the atmosphere swept through the room.

The classical music continued to play but the ambient chatter of the crowd noticeably dropped.

Several high-profile guests turned their heads toward the grand entrance. The sea of tailored suits and expensive gowns parted like water yielding to a heavy ship.

Lucas looked toward the brass doors.

Victoria Sterling had arrived.

The founder of Vertex Management wore a sweeping navy blue evening gown that made her look like cold royalty. She did not bother with a date or an entourage.

She walked into the hostile territory of her rival’s charity gala with her head held high and a look of profound apathy on her flawless face.

She scanned the room with dark, calculating eyes.

Her gaze locked directly onto Camilla. Then her eyes shifted an inch to the right and locked onto Lucas.

Lucas felt a drop of cold sweat roll down his spine.

Victoria was expecting him to have laid a trap for Camilla by now. She was waiting for the signal that her rival was walking into financial ruin.

A bright red notification window suddenly shattered the air right in front of Lucas’s face.

Lucas stared at the timer ticking down in the corner of his vision.

He had exactly ten minutes to figure out how to slip away from a fiercely possessive magnate to hold a secret meeting with her worst enemy.
