Chapter 1390: Too Lazy
Anthony’s words left everyone frozen in utter shock. They looked at him as though he were some sort of rare breed of animal. Who didn’t want to be made a Core Elder within the entire Null Sect? Ask any random disciple whether they wanted to become a Core Elder, and the answer would be an instant yes. Yet, right before their very eyes, someone had actually refused.
But... upon thinking more deeply about the matter, the Core Elders, Above Disciples, and the Sect Master himself immediately understood that Anthony’s choice indeed made sense and wasn’t all that surprising.
First of all, the boy had turned down the opportunity to become an Eternal Half of an Eternal Apex. Secondly, he was so ridiculously powerful that nobody knew where his true strength stopped or even began. Thirdly, what use was the title of Core Elder to someone as powerful as Anthony?
The Sect Master tapped his finger against the armrest for a moment, his oceanic blue eyes meeting Anthony’s sky-blue ones as the two simply stared at each other. After a moment, the Sword Ruler turned his gaze toward Jerry, Chu Feng, Lora Vake, and Tory Hale before instructing them.
"The four of you may leave, and an Inner Elder will deliver your points to you when they are ready."
His tone left no room for refusal of any sort.
The four immediately bowed respectfully, then turned around and walked away. At the end of the day, whether Anthony became the Sixth Core Elder or not didn’t matter, as it wouldn’t change the dynamics of their friendship.
As the door closed behind the four and the Core Elders, the Sect Master focused his attention on this descendant of his and asked in a curious tone.
"Why did you reject the position?"
His expression turned helpless as he sank deeper into his seat.
"Why wouldn’t I? Although I’ve been here for only a month or so, you guys have already had many meetings, suggesting that you meet up quite frequently."
Anthony shrugged as he began to speak, his tone indifferent. The constant meetings between the Core Elders and the Sect Master were his primary concern.
"Honestly speaking, I don’t want to attend any meetings in my life, let alone that many. To me, they’re simply too boring and bureaucratic. I’m just too lazy for all that."
He stated in finality, neither hiding his words nor mincing them to sound more respectful. He spoke as plainly as possible to get his message across.
Anthony had hated positions of leadership ever since his early days. He avoided them as though they were a plague. And as he had said, he was simply too lazy to get involved in any bureaucratic affairs. Back at the Blue Planet Military, even after becoming stronger than everyone else, he had still rejected the title of Supreme Monarch, as he didn’t have the time or inclination to create a Military Force.
Yes, he could use a single clone to handle all of it, but his clones hated such jobs just as much as he did. Besides, why should he even bother?
So, unless a position actually granted him something worthwhile that he couldn’t obtain or achieve on his own, then the answer was no, non, nein, nada, 不.
Hearing Anthony’s words, the Core Elders and Nathaniel were somewhat surprised by his reasoning. It contradicted what they knew. After all, people who reached the highest levels of power usually sought recognition. They wanted to rule and make their presence known, looking down on everyone else as though they were ants.
In a way, this was understandable. After all, they had spent thousands of years reaching their current realms of power, risking their lives countless times along the way, and you expected them to remain low-key?
Nah, they would surely show off so that everyone could see and appreciate the fruits of their labor.
Few were like Anthony, who simply didn’t care and wanted to remain relatively unbothered by anything and everything.
"Your reasons are valid."
The Sect Master began to speak after thinking about it for a moment.
"And since you’re simply too lazy to bother with such matters, I’ll still grant you the position of Sixth Core Elder, but you won’t need to participate in any meetings, decision-making, or anything of the sort. You can simply sit back and relax."
This was the only way forward; he had to compromise. It wasn’t as though he needed Anthony to do anything specific anyway... well, aside from holding back any incoming Eternal Apexes.
Hearing Nathaniel’s words, Anthony remained silent for a moment before nodding as he spoke.
"Then I will accept."
He decided to compromise as well, if only to save this Ancestor of his some face. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have cared in the slightest.
The Sect Master nodded in satisfaction, a smile finally appearing on his face. Although the title couldn’t bind Anthony to the sect or force him to remain, that didn’t matter too much anyway.
"Earlier, you were talking about the Lover of Death’s passing and didn’t want to discuss it while the Above Disciples were present. Can I ask you about it now?"
Nathaniel asked calmly. Although he was the Sect Master, he was simply too weak to force Anthony to answer any questions he didn’t wish to address.
Anthony didn’t hesitate to answer.
"The Lover of Death didn’t die. He simply Transcended."
At Anthony’s words, everyone present frowned for a moment, failing to understand what he meant.
"Transcended?"
The First Core Elder, The Punisher, asked in confusion.
"Transcendence means that he has left the Ecliptica Galaxy and stepped into a higher plane, or whatever comes next."
Anthony explained calmly before proceeding to elaborate on the Altar of Death and a few things the Lover of Death had done.
The Core Elders’ eyes widened in pure shock and speechlessness. Although they weren’t Eternal Apexes, they knew about the Path being sealed and how many Eternal Apexes had been trapped within the Ecliptica Galaxy for ages and eons.
Many had assumed that the Lover of Death had fallen. They had believed that he, the Killable, the Undefeated, the Unlost, had finally died, his soul claimed by the Unknown Regions.
Yet... the man had secretly Transcended without telling a single soul.
