Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 93 Bell-Eater's Choice
Kiva's cracked bell came out on the road home, the girl's weapon besides her spears, a hand bell of Kardune bronze, split down one flank.
The crack was old, family old, plus the bell had a custom the girl explained on the second westward day.
The bell rang only for choices, she said, family law, the bronze cast from a founder's verdict, ringing a single note whenever its wearer chose the dangerous option.
"It is our conscience," she said, tapping the split flank. "Cast, cracked, plus inherited. It rings when I take the hard road, so the family can bill me accurately later."
"Does it ring often," Orris asked.
"Constantly," Kiva said, cheerfully. "I am third daughter. Third daughters get the bell because somebody has to choose the hard road plus somebody else has to hear about it."
The bell's history was told on the road's first night, the family's bronze having been cast the year the founding line was drawn, the two instruments siblings.
The founder's verdict, the girl said, had been a border ruling, the case's judgment poured into the bell's alloy, the family's conscience carrying case law in bronze.
The crack came three generations later, a great-grandmother's hard choice, the bell ringing itself apart at a crossing that cost the family two wagons.
The family kept the crack, the repair debated at every generation's council, plus always declined, the flaw being the instrument's honesty.
An honest bell only rings for the dangerous option, the family law ran, plus a perfect bell, the elders ruled, might ring for the easy ones too.
The bell's first ring on the home road came at a crossroads decision, the safe route west around a storm seam versus the direct route through it.
The first ring was heard by the whole formation, the crack's one note arriving like a signature at the bottom of a choice.
The seam's crossing cost them a day, two repairs, plus one small landslide, plus the bell rang again at the far side, satisfied, billing the choice as taken.
Rain rode the storm seam the whole crossing, the formation's shoulders set against it, the bronze's second note carrying through the wet like a struck coin.
"That is not conscience," Vell observed, re-lashing a wheel. "That is a yes-man in bronze."
"It is a record," Kiva said, patting it. "Conscience argues. The bell files."
The team's grammar absorbed the note by the second day, the crack joining the whistle, the ring, plus the horn as the formation's fourth signal, one new syllable.
Marrin logged each ring with its cause, the recorder building the bell's jurisprudence, choice by choice, the season's most honest column.
The first logged cause read, direct route through storm seam, accepted, the second read, exclusive contract declined, the column filling with prices.
The second ring came at the Reach's western gate, where the guild's eastern office waited with an offer, a survey contract, exclusive, rich.
The bell rang through the whole negotiation, note after note as Kiva asked questions whose answers kept being the dangerous option.
"You chose the hard line seven times in one meeting," the representative said, packing. "Your instrument never stopped."
"The instrument is honest," Kiva said. "I am merely obedient to it. Family law. Bill the guild accordingly."
The guild's eastern office felt the bell's jurisdiction personally, the meeting's seven rings entering the guild's own minutes as an appendix.
The appendix ran one line, the bell of the counterparty rang seven times, governance advised, the institution's first honest self-assessment in decades.
The representative departed with the appendix already drafted, the man's hand steady, his signature arriving at the guild's tempo, which was slower than the bronze's.
The bell rang for Otta twice that week, once when he declined a guild escort through the storm country, once when he chose a failing seam in the rain.
Both times it rang from Kiva's hip at his decision, the bronze reading his choices through some family frequency nobody could chart, including the horn.
"It does that," Kiva said, unbothered. "The bell respects a fellow biller. You choose hard roads like a third daughter, porter. Have you considered the family trade?"
"He has," Vell said. "The family is us. The interest is geological."
Otta's rings were the column's anomaly, the bronze reading the porter through some family frequency, plus billing him at third-daughter rates.
Kiva watched the first of his rings with professional alarm, the ground-reader's instruments finding no signal, plus the family's instruments finding certainty.
The bell's grammar for the porter, she ruled, was sponsorship, the bronze treating him as family by adoption of habit, plus ringing to witness.
The witness theory entered the archive under observations, subject now rings for two, the formation's accounting acquiring a joint filing.
The road home ran through the Reach's recovering east, past re-hung doors, walking bridges keeping their schedules, plus the amphitheater city now named on new maps.
The founding seam was a pilgrimage site, the orphan mask a shrine, the chair an attraction, plus the team's season carved in at least four villages' public bone.
The Reach's goodbye was a funeral court held for nobody, the region's highest courtesy, convened to read the living team's obligations aloud plus settle them to zero.
The funeral court for nobody convened at dusk, the Reach's clean-filing courtesy, the season's whole ledger read aloud plus discharged.
Fourteen items, all read, all witnessed, thirteen discharged with honors, the court declaring the bell line's accounts with the Reach closed, balanced, plus welcome.
The team stood as the court's subject for the reading, the first card ever filed out clean by the region, plus the reader closing the book on them gently.
"It is a farewell discharge," the reader explained. "The Reach does not say goodbye to anyone carrying unfinished business. We file you out clean instead."
The bell rang once at the reading's end, Kiva's crack singing its note, plus the court entered it as the fifteenth item.
The gate's keepers touched their doorposts at the sound, the region's farewell to the instrument being the same as its greeting to the dead, polite plus permanent.
Cett's letter caught them at the gate, the warden's monthly arriving by relay, the fen's rota holding, the heart content, plus the keeping priced at one hour daily.
Otta read it aloud to the formation by habit now, the correspondence of keepers being the team's real chain of command, plus everyone outranked by soup.
The road home ran west through honest country, the applause long gone, the region's quiet settling over the card like a sheet over furniture.
The city's light arrived on the fourth evening, the Latch's smoke plus lamps on the horizon, the season's whole geography contracting to home.
The bell rang once at the sight of it, the crack's note arriving unbidden, the dangerous option being, as always, the honest one, going back famous.
The formation walked the last mile in step, four trades plus a recorder, the bell line returning to the district that had named it, wider by a trial daughter.
Orris walked that mile nearest the bronze, the fencer's ear cataloguing the crack's decay note by note, the family manual gaining a page on another family's instrument.
The district's gate lamps were lit early for them, the keeper of the gate recognizing the card at forty feet, the city's welcome arriving as architecture plus lamplight.
The bell's verdict column was copied for the family's volumes before the gate, the season's jurisprudence heading west by wagon post, six generations of case law gaining a year.
The copy ran nine pages, the recorder's certification attached, plus the family's seal requested, the season's archives merging by mail.
The family's reply to the copied column arrived before the city, one plank, one line of wagon-code, the mother's hand steady as the bronze it described.
The line read, good ringing, come home when it stops being interesting, the family's blessing plus prophecy sharing one sentence, as usual.
The gate's last court entered the bell line's clean filing into the region's permanent record, the Reach's copy sealed in bone, the season's receipt carved.
The carving's unveiling drew both parishes plus one leviath, the east's formality observing from the ridge, plus declining to bill the attendance.
The road's inns knew the bell by the third night, the crack's note arriving before the card, plus the beds assigned by its reputation.
One innkeeper rang her own hand bell in answer, the wrong tempo entirely, the bronze forgiving her, plus the family's grammar surviving the counterfeits.
Kiva slept those nights with the bell in reach rather than under her pillow, the girl's concession to the road, family bronze preferring a wrist within reach.

'Formation of four trades plus a bronze yes-man,' Otta thought, at the western gate, looking back at the white country. 'The Reach files us out clean. First institution ever to. Let's see if the city manages it.'
