Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 92 Vell's Stitch

  • Next Chapter

Vell's showcase arrived on the season's second Reach day, when the nineteenth village asked for a road nobody could build, plus she built it out of other roads' memories.

The nineteenth's request had reached the showcase's administration in verse, the Reach accepting petitions in meter, plus the poem had been the year's best.

Its final stanza named the league a wound in memory, the region's grief arriving in rhyme, plus the showcase's second day assigned to treat it.

The nineteenth stood isolated by the after-season's worst scar, a league of un-described ground between it plus the shrine line, the appetite's deepest bite, unhealed plus unhealing.

The restoration crews had written the league off, ground with no memory of itself being un-surveyable, un-chalkable, plus unwalkable by anything that needed describing to exist.

The village had supplies for a month, plus a shrine line thinning, plus the Board's answer being a relief caravan routed a month the long way around.

"The ground does not remember," the crew chief explained, apologetic, polite, Reach to the bone. "We cannot chalk what we cannot walk. Nothing can walk it that remembers itself."

"I do not remember myself," Vell said, shouldering her kit. "I remember roads. Fetch me every retired map of this league you own."

The archives produced nine maps, six centuries of failed surveys, trade routes, pilgrim ways, smuggler runs, plus one Kardune wagon trail that predated the founding line.

The maps' delivery was witnessed by two courts, the archive's transfer of six centuries of failed surveys conducted like a funeral for paper.

She read them all night, the road witch at her oldest work, the maps' dead routes cross-referenced against boot memory, family grammar.

Her notes ran in road shorthand, the margin language the guilds had tried to ban twice, plus the league's ghost roads emerging from it like photographic negatives.

Nine maps yielded eleven routes, three of them contradicting each other's existence, the league's history including at least one cartographer's open lie.

The lie was her favorite, the twelfth route, the forger's invention so plausible that Vell rated it walkable, honesty being no requirement for pavement.

She slept two hours, dreamed in milestones, plus woke with the stitch's first move already priced, the road witch's whole economy opening for business.

"Roads lie to eyes, never to feet," she told the team at dawn. "My grandmother's law. The feet are the archive. I am going to walk the league, plus the league is going to remember being walked."

The scar's lip was roped, witnessed, plus blessed by the Reach's ex-mayor by relay, the Reach giving the attempt its full liturgical blessing plus a packed lunch.

The stitch began at the scar's western lip, Vell stepping off described ground alone, boots on nothing, the team anchored at the rim, the Reach holding its breath.

The first league-step was taken at the bell line's dawn, the team on the rim, the Reach's messengers posted at every threshold to carry word.

She walked the first league-step blind, eyes shut, family soles reading, plus the ground under her boot read back, faintly, the ghost of packed earth remembering weight.

The ground read back faintly at the third step, the forgotten packed earth answering her boots like a retired clerk asked one more question.

The stitch was a sewing, in truth, each remembered footfall a stitch, the trail of her walking becoming a seam of described passage, thread by thread, step by step.

Marrin logged the walk in quarter-league entries, the recorder's page filling with timestamps plus bearings, the archive refusing to blink while the witch was inside the amnesia.

The league resisted, the amnesia deep, whole stretches giving nothing, plus there Vell lied, inventing road where memory failed, chalk memory, road-crew shorthand, her own grandmother's marks drawn walking.

Vell's stitch ran zig where memory ran true, plus zag where both ran silent, the seam following the liar's cartography half the time, plus improving on it.

The league's middle third had no memory at all, the appetite's deepest bite, plus there the witch lied wholesale, chalk marks thrown ahead like dice.

The lies took, one after another, the Reach's law unable to distinguish forged boundary from remembered, the region's one open door, plus the witch's whole education.

The silence out there carried weight on the rim, the un-described air pressing down like wet wool, the watchers' own described ground feeling suddenly borrowed.

Orris counted the witch's paces aloud from the rope, the fencer's steady numbers giving the rim something to hold, each audible step stitching the watchers too.

Her oil held out to the far lip by ration, the road crew's last tin, the family's supply discipline buying the league's final furlong.

By noon she had stitched a league, one woman sewing ground, plus the nineteenth village saw a figure walk out of the nothing that had eaten their eastern world.

She emerged at the nineteenth's shrine line at dusk, one woman, one seam, one league, plus the village's bells forgetting their own manners.

The bells called the whole nineteenth out of doors, grandmothers lifting children onto the shrine wall, the parish watching a road arrive on foot ahead of any caravan.

The seam settled audibly that night, the walked lies calcifying, the ground's new law curing like mortar, plus the horn confirming it note by note.

The seam settled by the second day, the walked lie calcifying into law, the Reach adopting it, the shrine lines linking to it, the nineteenth village re-bridged by thread.

Kiva walked the seam's length at dawn, the ground-reader certifying the road witch's work, the two trades' jurisdictions shaking hands over a league.

The two walkers met at the league's midpoint by arrangement, the horn answering some question of chalk, the certificate signed standing on yesterday's impossible ground.

The certification entered both archives, the Reach's plus the family's, the stitch becoming the year's only route certified by boots alone.

The relief caravan crossed at noon, its driver weeping openly at the mileage, a month of detour dying in a morning, plus the witch billing him nothing.

The region's carvers asked what to carve for her, plus she named her terms the way she named all terms, itemized, unhurried, plus entirely reasonable.

A door, she said, at the seam's western lip, standing open, with no wall, because every road she built deserved a door that led nowhere but out.

The nineteenth renamed its eastern gate in her honor, the sign carved in road shorthand, the only public signage in Nhal legible exclusively to crews.

She gave the village her thimble for the gate's lintel, the worn mirror-faced heirloom, the witch's whole estate, plus the Reach entering it as treasure.

The showcase's second day closed in the nineteenth's square, the two villages of the seam's ends meeting over it for the first time in living memory.

The toast ran to the family's grandmothers, both parishes standing, plus Vell accepting on their behalf with the market entirely missing from her voice.

The team's camp moved onto the seam itself that night, five beds on a week-old road, the season sleeping on its own exhibits, plus dreaming in described ground.

The seam's anniversary would be walked annually, the nineteenth ruled, the stitched league becoming the Reach's newest law with a parade attached.

The witch's walking boots were retired at the seam's eastern lip, the family leather entering the shrine beside the thimble, both exhibits of one morning's work.

The seam held through the first frost, the horn certifying weekly, the walked lie surviving weather, the family's grammar plus the region's law sharing custody.

The league's survey was commissioned from her formally, the Board's eastern office engaging the witch's grammar, the institution finally buying what it had banned.

She took the commission at family rates, the paperwork reading like a treaty, plus the signature reading like a signature, the region's two laws co-signing.

The team's night at the nineteenth was quiet, five hunters plus one statue of a door, the road-home showcases complete, the trades each having their chapter.

"You walked ground that eats description," Kiva said, horn quiet, the ground-reader professional respect at maximum. "With your eyes shut. Lying. I have no column for this."

"Column it as family technique," Vell said, mouth full of celebration bread. "The Kardune read the ground. My people write on it. We should have met generations ago."

"The families did meet," Marrin said, from the archive, faintly. "There is a wagon trail predating the founding line through that league. Somebody's grandmother walked somebody's grandmother's road."

"Then it is settled," Vell said, raising her cup. "We are hereditary. The interest is now geological."

'Three trades, three days, three chapters,' Otta thought, at the fire, the resident bell counting a team fully staffed. 'Blade held a road. Road stitched a league. Ground sang a region. The bell had better do something spectacular soon.'

The bell, resident in his chest, rang once, cracked, small, amused, as if to say the spectacular was scheduled, plus the schedule was not his.
