Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 42 Investigator at the Door
Ione returned before sunrise with a search warrant broad enough to cover every shelf, drain, vehicle, plus mask inside the depot.
Paloma read it beneath the shutter light while six Directorate technicians waited in rain behind their sealed evidence carts.
'She closed one door on the buyer, now opens all of ours... law likes symmetry more than people,' Ossian stayed seated, 'let Paloma bite first.'
"Paragraph four names counterfeit fragments already seized yesterday, making that section impossible to execute here," Paloma said.
Ione accepted the correction without argument, crossing out twelve words before initialling the margin beside Paloma's own signature.
"Paragraph seven authorises seizure of unidentified living material, meaning the recovered core now meets that description," Ione said.
Paloma tapped the auction transfer receipt attached to the safe, reminding every camera that The Unmasked held lawful custody.
They settled on supervised sampling inside the depot, no removal, plus a chain-of-custody copy delivered before the technicians departed.
'A warrant reduced to a visit through nouns... damn, Paloma could invoice gravity for trespass,' Ossian opened the safe, 'watch every swab.'
Maelle checked the cylinder seal while Calista recorded all six technicians entering the marked inspection square one at a time.
The captured buyer sat cuffed in the office, his split cheek covered by a transparent dressing that exposed black filament beneath.
His borrowed face had stopped shifting after Doran's name disappeared from conversation, leaving the left side slightly higher than before.
Ione questioned him between samples, asking who installed the filament and where Veil Court stored its living subjects.
"I bought a correction rather than membership, after the clinic changed one flaw clients noticed during negotiations," he said.
'One flaw corrected with another person's thread... vanity wearing surgical language,' Ossian smelled antiseptic under his blood, 'ask what they removed.'
The buyer could not remember his original left cheek, including whether it had carried a scar before Solenne altered him.
Ione noted the omission without calling it trauma, matching the clean absence inside Doran's memory.
One technician brushed Ossian's shoulder while moving toward the safe, drawing Jackal tight under his right side.
"Your warrant does not cover touching my client, so try that reach again after adding medical liability," Paloma said.
The technician stepped away, embarrassed enough to reveal the contact had been clumsy rather than planned.
'She assumes threat until contradiction... useful among uniforms, dangerous near everybody else,' Ossian closed Jackal, 'do not punish an accident.'
Ione noticed the restraint, adding it to whatever private ledger kept her suspicion from becoming certainty.
Her lead analyst sampled preservation gel without touching the pale fragment resting against the cylinder wall.
The swab changed from white to violet, indicating living protein inside material officially listed as destroyed three months earlier.
"Counterfeit plates carried larval rhythm without living residue, but this source can still transmit instructions," Maelle said.
Ione compared photographs of Doran's wounds, the buyer's seam, plus Ossian's unbroken skin after handling both.
"The damage patterns reject you, proving this link is not using your body as a host," she said.
'Not guilty through incompatibility... an odd defence, but I will take it,' Ossian met her eyes, 'put that sentence in writing.'
She amended her preliminary profile, removing the claim that Ossian had activated Doran through direct masked contact.
The revised version still named him as a responsive trigger, preserving suspicion around his voice rather than his hands.
'Two bodies answer one voice... leave the surgeon absent, every later officer hunts the wrong throat,' Ossian tapped Solenne's blank field, 'fill it.'
A second analyst compared the curves, finding each strand bent around tissue through Maelle's stolen stress channels.
"Those paths preserve blood flow during injury, but my paper designed them for emergency battlefield splints under collapsing structural pressure, never implantation," Maelle said.
Ione added theft of restricted medical research, unlawful human trials, plus coordinated memory alteration beneath Solenne's name.
Paloma photographed the amended page before ink dried, preserving a version the Directorate could not quietly simplify during review.
"She called forgetting a service fee, claiming every correction cost one unwanted detail from the life attached to it," he said.
'A face bought with its owner's past... damn, Solenne sells relief twice, once through flesh, once through absence,' Ossian studied him, 'which detail paid?'
He remembered choosing something embarrassing, yet could not name the event, person, or feeling removed during his procedure.
Calista read over Ione's shoulder without permission, finding three references to Ossian and none to Solenne's stolen research.
"Your profile gives the absent surgeon less space than the witness," Calista said.
Ione looked at Maelle's copied diagrams before writing Solenne's name across the first page in black ink.
'Correction accepted without theatre... hell, she might be more dangerous when fair,' Ossian watched Calista step back, 'remember that too.'
The Directorate technicians packed their swabs into separate carriers, each numbered against Paloma's handwritten custody list.
Nobody noticed the sanitation worker enter through the side door wearing a municipal grey coat and carrying an empty waste drum.
Bastien challenged her beside the wash station, receiving a collection order for surgical refuse from unit fourteen.
"Wrong building, since that clinic sits six blocks east," he said.
The worker checked the printed address, apologised, plus rolled her drum back outside before Ione turned from the safe.
Ossian noticed a sweet chemical trace remaining near the side door, unlike rain, bleach, or anything Bastien stored onsite.
'Lost collector enters the correct side passage... no, somebody wanted access without taking evidence,' Ossian followed the scent, 'check the floor.'
A single black filament lay beneath the wash station where no fragment had been handled during sampling.
Maelle reached for tongs, yet Ione stopped her and photographed its position against the drain tiles.
The captured buyer began pulling against his cuffs when the filament entered his sight.
"That belongs to the woman who cleaned us, though Solenne never lets her enter surgery," he said.
Ione sealed the strand, assigning it a fresh evidence number rather than grouping it with the auction fragments.
"Describe this cleaner without omitting any tools, scents, or clothing," she said.
The buyer remembered gloves, prepared oils, plus a perforated black censer carried where ordinary workers kept disinfectant sprayers.
He recalled no face, claiming the woman smelled different every time she entered Veil Court rooms.
'A person erased through scent instead of memory... smart, unless the mixtures leave their own pattern,' Ossian touched Furnace, 'Bastien, inventory the air.'
Bastien sealed vents and collected filters while the Directorate search ended under Paloma's supervision.
The six technicians departed with swabs, photographs, plus one foreign filament, leaving every owned mask inside the depot safe.
Ione remained by the side door, reading the municipal collection order Bastien had copied before returning it.
Its route number belonged to a waste circuit discontinued fourteen months earlier after tunnels beneath the eastern district flooded.
"The cleaner knew which obsolete paperwork would survive a quick glance," Ione said.
"She also knew we would look toward unit fourteen after she left," Ossian replied.
The system sharpened the lingering chemical trace into three distinct notes across his perception.
[Biological signals detected: 3]
[Source material identified as blood]
[Direction: eastern municipal drain]
'Three scents carried through one stain... shit, that is not perfume,' Ossian crouched beside the side drain, 'it is a map.'
Outside, the sanitation worker turned her empty drum onto a service lane, unaware that a drop from its wheel had marked every corner.
A second cleaner watched from the depot roof through a rain-streaked maintenance lens positioned between two rusted ventilation boxes, recognised the chemical trail, and smiled without making any sound at all.
