Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 41 A Face Without a Name
Doran woke after vascular surgery with his right arm splinted above the heart and three Directorate seals fixed across the door.
Ione allowed Ossian ten minutes beside the bed, having refused Ruan, Paloma, two auction lawyers, plus Doran's mother in that order.
'An investigator admitting me before family... no, choosing evidence over comfort,' Ossian sat where Doran could see both exits, 'start with his name.'
"Doran, can you tell me what you agreed to inside the clinic?" Ione asked from the window.
He remembered signing a treatment consent, accepting pain, plus allowing Veil Court to discard material that failed during attachment.
"A woman explained the risks through a white screen, but I never saw her mouth," Doran said.
His memory stopped whenever Ione asked about promises, prices, or instructions spoken after the first incision.
'Consent survives while the surgeon vanishes... clean edges mean editing, not shock,' Ossian watched his pupils, 'ask about a name.'
"Did Solenne ever promise you a complete mask during treatment?" Ione asked.
Doran stared at her until the monitor changed rhythm, unable to place the name anywhere inside his remembered treatment.
He knew a woman had promised something, yet the object of that promise felt cut from the sentence.
"There was a face, though I cannot remember whether she wore it or offered it," he whispered.
The black filament twitched beneath his bandages when Ossian repeated Solenne's name from across the room.
Ione saw the movement, ending the interview before Directorate observers could demand another test through the glass.
'Thread hears what memory lost... hell, somebody tied the missing name into his arm,' Ossian stood, 'record that before they bury it.'
Ione signed the observation herself, adding Ossian as witness despite the suspension still attached to his old registration.
"You separated counterfeit material without killing him, earning an interview instead of trust," she said.
"Trust would cost more than ten minutes, leaving me happy to accept the cheaper arrangement," Ossian replied.
At the depot, Maelle had covered the office table with enlarged photographs from the auction ledger and Doran's removed fragments.
Each piece carried branching channels shaped like stress calculations from her rejected Guild Institute paper.
She found the first copied diagram beneath a seller's authentication stamp, rotated sideways to disguise the load map.
'They stole failure paths, not her finished design... damn, theory meant to prevent rupture became instructions for controlled breaking,' Ossian leaned closer, 'tell Ione.'
Maelle placed her original submission beside the photograph, matching eleven junctions plus one deliberate flaw she had inserted before review.
"Only the institute held this version, meaning Solenne received it through someone with archive access," she said.
Paloma checked the old submission receipt, finding a reviewer number assigned to a committee that officially never opened Maelle's file.
The six-officer credential pool had accessed the same archive two days before Doran entered unit fourteen.
Its activity log remained wiped, leaving the reviewer number as a door without fingerprints.
Ione arrived with two sealed carriers and a written seizure order covering every counterfeit fragment recovered from the auction.
"These belong in a Directorate vault until examination finishes, though you may keep copies of your measurements," she said.
Maelle held one envelope against her chest, looking younger than she had while cutting plates from Doran's bleeding arm.
"That piece proves they used my work, while a copy cannot preserve residue inside the channel," she said.
Ione did not soften, yet she amended the inventory to require Maelle's presence whenever analysts opened the envelope.
'Control with one useful hinge... she bends procedure exactly far enough to keep it from becoming theft,' Ossian watched, 'take the bargain.'
The larval core remained outside Ione's order after Paloma produced the auction transfer receipt naming The Unmasked as lawful rescuer.
Ione read the document twice, offended less by its argument than by the fact that Paloma had prepared it before anyone asked.
"Evidence acquired during a paid rescue operation still remains Directorate evidence," Ione said.
"Property recovered under a paid service contract remains invoiced property, and courts enjoy nouns more than feelings," Paloma answered.
They settled on a Directorate seal across the cylinder, storage inside the depot safe, plus daily inspection by both parties.
That arrangement lasted nine minutes before an anonymous buyer appeared at the shutter asking to inspect lot forty-one.
He wore auction gloves, no card, and a rain coat dry despite the storm outside.
Bastien blocked the entrance with his cleaning cart while Calista filmed from the office threshold.
"I purchased information about the core before the auction failed, leaving my contract untouched by your rescue," the buyer said.
'No damp shoes, no visible transport... someone placed him nearby before the rain began,' Ossian opened Human, 'keep him talking.'
The Human Mask smoothed his posture without changing his face, making the buyer's practiced impatience feel suddenly excessive.
"Describe what you bought before we decide whether any protected information survived," Ossian said.
The buyer named the larval structure, preservation temperature, plus a seam absent from every auction photograph released to bidders.
Ione moved between him and the safe, one hand resting beside the folded warrant inside her coat.
"Your seller disclosed sealed evidence, requiring you to give me that person's name," she said.
He refused, claiming professional privilege that applied to physicians rather than masked-material brokers.
Paloma searched the auction ledger while he spoke, matching his glove size to a purchase recorded under card thirty-two minutes earlier.
'A buyer without a card still leaves measurements... money records bodies better than names,' Ossian watched Ione notice Paloma's screen.
Card thirty-two belonged to a deceased broker whose licence had been used twice after burial, both times by Solenne's company through intermediaries.
The buyer denied knowing that company, though the fixed left cheek tightened before Ione finished pronouncing its registered address.
Calista magnified her recording on the office screen, showing a pale diagonal ridge beneath his left cheek.
'A seam under borrowed skin... not a mask edge, something stitched farther back,' Ossian felt Human recoil, 'do not touch him.'
The buyer noticed Calista's screen and smiled with only the right side of his mouth.
His left cheek remained fixed while the hidden ridge shifted upward, pressing once against the skin below his eye.
"Your borrowed face does not fit the bones holding it," Calista said.
"Neither does yours," he replied, looking at the scar around her mask line.
Calista stepped forward by choice, keeping her numb left hand visible rather than hiding it behind her coat.
The buyer retreated from that hand, revealing fear that had not appeared under Ione's threat of arrest.
'He fears failed compatibility more than law... Solenne trained him to recognise survivors,' Ossian closed Human, 'show him the core.'
Ione objected until Ossian offered the full auction ledger in exchange for one supervised reaction test.
She accepted after Paloma added a receipt stating evidence had been traded for investigative access, not surrendered.
Bastien rolled the sealed cylinder from the safe to the marked inspection square without crossing the buyer's reach.
Nothing inside moved while Ione read the seal number, Maelle checked the collar, plus Calista maintained the camera angle.
Ossian deliberately spoke Doran's full name twice from behind the sealed cylinder.
A pale fragment lifted through the preservation gel and pressed against the glass facing his voice.
The buyer's hidden cheek seam answered with the same movement, climbing toward his eye before he forced it down.
Bright silver system text opened across Ossian's vision without ever hiding the anxious buyer.

'The core follows my voice, his face answers that object... shit, neither memory belongs where it sits,' Ossian pointed at the door, 'Ione, close it.'
Instead, the buyer reached for his cheek rather than an exit, pressing hard enough to split the borrowed seam.
Black filament showed beneath the opening, wet with blood and turning toward Ossian like another needle finding north, while Ione sealed every exit before the buyer could reach one.
