Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter
Chapter 39 The Auction Breaks Open
The auction room held forty numbered chairs, no windows, one public stair, plus a fire door sealed during every viewing.
Ossian entered on Paloma's shell-company credential with Calista beside him, while Maelle carried their plain equipment case through unchecked.
'Blacklisted engineer admitted as furniture... porter work opens another expensive door,' Ossian accepted card twenty-three, 'sit down, look bored.'
Lot forty-one waited under glass at the front, its preserved larval core cleaned until the pale seam looked decorative.
The attached destruction certificate carried Ruan's signature below a blank witness field, displayed beside Ivory Banner provenance without comment.
Ruan sat in the third row holding card eleven, dressed for a meeting rather than the sale of evidence he had buried.
'He came to watch the reserve clear... sixty thousand buys a lot of confidence from a man who signed destroyed,' Ossian lowered his card, 'wait for authentication.'
The auction house sold trust through a resonance cradle fixed beside the display platform, printing one verified signature onto every buyer docket.
Lot nineteen entered at twenty past ten, passed its reading, then sold for fourteen thousand to somebody wearing card six.
Maelle's hidden hammer stayed warm inside the case, marking that fragment as genuine without showing anybody how she knew.
Lot twenty entered next, while cold spread across the case leather until water gathered near Maelle's hand.
'First counterfeit... house machine approves it, hammer reads dead material,' Ossian watched the green verification print, 'let two more through.'
Three false lots cleared before the interval for eighty-one thousand credits combined, each leaving with house authentication plus refund protection.
Card six bought two of them through separate accounts, a detail Paloma marked before the second docket finished printing.
The buyer wore no guild crest, though his deposit originated from an Ivory Banner procurement branch closed after Ossian's opening raid.
'Ruan is buying the product back through another pocket... shit, seller plus buyer under one roof,' Ossian watched card six, 'keep the number.'
Calista photographed the bidder's shoes rather than his face, catching red Gate dust pressed into both heel seams.
Maelle identified the dust as stabiliser waste, proving card six had entered a Veil Court work room before attending the auction.
"He is not a collector," she spoke through the private comm, "Collectors carry cases, while that man carries disposal residue."
'A cleanup worker bidding eighty-one thousand with guild money... hell, they are purchasing their own proof,' Ossian kept his card down, 'let the house print it.'
The third counterfeit went to an unrelated buyer, spreading Veil Court's liability beyond any account Solenne could quietly refund.
Paloma saved the transfer confirmation beside the cold-hammer footage, building a money trail that required no public belief in masks.
One house clerk noticed her recording angle, checked the observer clause, plus chose not to challenge a client whose terms permitted it.
Paloma recorded from the public stair under a client-observer clause nobody at the door had bothered to read.
Her second camera held the cradle display, while the first captured card numbers beside every sold lot.
[A rival court launders shed faces through a merchant lair]
[The buyers smell profit strongly enough to ignore rot]
'Rot with a printed docket... system understands auctions better than I do,' Ossian felt Jackal pull toward lot forty-one, 'not yet.'
The interval began at eleven, sending bidders toward coffee without moving anyone closer to a real name.
Tallis entered through the service lift wearing card thirty, his rejected arm whole beneath a rolled sleeve.
Doran followed with the black filament visible from wrist to elbow, presented as a successful wearer rather than a patient under evidence protection.
'They brought refusal plus survival into the room as sales tools... shit, Doran should be under Ione's order,' Ossian found Calista, 'hold the stair.'
Veil Court had turned Tallis into proof of selectivity, while Doran's working hand advertised a result nobody could inspect beneath the skin.
Solenne stepped from the lift behind them, wearing twelve silver rings beneath her fingernails plus a grey coat without one visible credential.
The auctioneer held the lift for her, telling every bidder which person the house expected to obey.
"Lot forty-one carries Ivory Banner provenance," Solenne addressed the room, "Its destruction certificate carries the same guild's signature."
Paloma had sent that certificate to the house at noon, but Solenne chose the moment when exposing it protected every earlier sale.
'She sacrifices one stolen core to save three counterfeits already sold... not helping us, only moving the fire,' Ossian watched the bidders turn, 'keep cameras wide.'
The auctioneer suspended lot forty-one, locking its display while staff began comparing documents nobody had placed together before that morning.
Every counterfeit sold before the interval kept its authentication, since the announced problem concerned provenance rather than material truth.
Maelle opened the equipment case by one inch, allowing her hammer's cold line to enter Paloma's camera frame beside lot twenty's docket.
"Your cradle passed three objects that freeze a Furnace Relic," Paloma called from the stair, "Suspend the sellers before they leave."
The room moved toward her accusation, which was when Solenne touched two rings beneath her left hand.
Doran's black filament lifted under his skin, answering counterfeit material inside the nearest display case across seven metres of air.
The arm opened along its retained line, proving the residue Maelle had documented was still active rather than healed damage.
'Thread stayed after the shell came off... now every false lot is calling it home,' Ossian rose from card twenty-three, 'get Doran away from glass.'
Calista reached the public stair before the first bidder, placing her cased spear across its rail while directing people into one moving line.
Maelle went toward the resonance cradle, choosing the machine holding four fragments rather than the patient carrying one.
One hammer strike removed its power seat, dropping every display field before three additional counterfeits could answer Doran.
The transformed arm reached three metres across the aisle, feeding on a case whose lock had failed with the cradle.
Ironback Left caught its downward weight, holding Doran above the floor while Jackal Right found the seam through his shoulder.
'That seam kills the growth plus the boy... no, catch only, give Calista nine seconds,' Ossian closed the hunting fist, 'stand here.'
Nine seconds let twenty-seven people reach the public stair, each card counted by Calista before its owner disappeared into daylight.
Bastien held the van across the service entrance, loading eight people cut by broken display glass plus nobody else.
Eleven bidders remained in the room, including Ruan, trapped behind chairs while Doran's arm blocked the only clear aisle.
Solenne reached the service lift alone, leaving Tallis beside Doran rather than spending one ring to move either patient.
'Her boundary ends where the lift closes... remember that when she calls herself a surgeon,' Ossian put stored weight into the floor, 'clear the aisle.'
Tallis dragged two chairs away with Loadbearer strength, creating enough space for Maelle to pull the remaining cases beyond Doran's reach.
The auction house triggered containment from upstairs, dropping heat-set security foam across the fire door plus the public stair landing.
Calista crossed before the foam hardened, while Ossian remained inside with Maelle, Doran, Tallis, Ruan, plus ten other cardholders.
The foam set four inches thick, rated against blades, impact, ordinary fire, plus every weapon the house expected a bidder to carry.
'Eleven cardholders including Ruan... one patient, three of us, no exit,' Ossian counted the room, 'at least the number stays simple.'
Outside, Paloma kept both cameras live, recording the house seal after its own staff had locked clients beside unstable merchandise.
Ruan reached the foam first, struck it once with an armoured palm, then looked toward Dreadweight without pretending he had another answer.
"Open it," Ruan used the command voice from the Gate, "There are eleven buyers inside this room."
'He cut my rope under the same voice... now the line is on his side of the drop,' Ossian opened Ironback Left, 'name the rescue price first.'
