Maskbound: The Ultimate Hunter

Chapter 38 Ruan Buys the Story

The cold-storage company cancelled at nine, using a reputational-exposure clause Paloma found nowhere in the contract copy they had signed.

Two new enquiries stopped answering before ten, while guild 4417 entered a Directorate review queue at eleven without one formal accusation filed.

'Nine minutes of edited footage costs more than any monster we killed... shit, the correction has not left Ione's desk,' Ossian read the notices, 'do not answer angry.'

Paloma drafted a denial, read the opening paragraph once, then fed all three pages through Maelle's workshop shredder.

"A denial repeats his caption in our voice," she watched the strips fall, "Every search result receives another copy for free."

Calista stood at the route board with the full clinic timeline pinned beside Ruan's published nine minutes.

"Silence leaves his version alone," she tapped the missing forty-two minutes, "People cannot compare evidence they never receive."

'Both answers lose... one feeds the lie, one starves the truth,' Ossian looked from paper strips to timestamps, 'find a third job.'

Bastien read the cancellation clause aloud, giving each word the same flat weight he used for damaged equipment manifests.

The company had called four people who saved its building a continuing exposure, twelve days after paying them without one deduction.

[A rival apex has fouled the water around your den]

[Arguing with the scent teaches every scavenger where to gather]

'System votes with Paloma... wonderful, even monster government has media advice,' Ossian closed the screen, 'what does Ruan need next.'

Ruan needed a witness who had seen Ossian inside the opening Gate plus carried enough guilt to sound believable on camera.

Ivory Banner called Perris into an internal interview at eleven, placing two senior officers behind the table with his old contract between them.

Paloma learned the time from the public visitor log, though nobody at the depot knew what answer he gave.

At two, Perris's suspended roster entry changed to terminated, with equipment return required before the end of business.

'He said no to something... or asked a question Ruan could not edit,' Ossian watched the roster update, 'do not call him yet.'

Calling would turn any refusal into payment, making Perris's choice part of the account between them rather than his own.

Ossian wrote one message, deleted it, then put the phone under the compatibility diagrams Tallis had left behind.

The longer clinic file appeared on a district archive at two seventeen under Perris's own registry name.

Fifty-one minutes began with Tallis's refusal, showed Doran entering whole, plus held Ruan in the corridor before Ossian touched the chair.

No commentary came with it, only both timestamps plus the observer docket scanned front and back.

'He released the thing I needed without asking what it buys him... damn it, that boy finally made a clean choice,' Ossian opened the file, 'do not make it forgiveness.'

The district feeds had already moved to a collapsed bridge, so the full recording reached one tenth of Ruan's first audience.

What it created was not a correction but a footnote, stored where a hearing clerk could retrieve it after public attention left.

"Footnotes decide rulings," Paloma saved three local copies, "Ruan purchased six hours, while Perris purchased the record after them."

Bastien printed the timeline on paper, filed one copy beneath the porter schedules, then sealed another inside the depot wall safe.

Doran's mother called at noon from a clinic waiting room, asking why her son's arm carried a line no doctor would name.

Paloma gave her Ione's office, the evidence number, plus the full recording without offering one sentence about legal representation.

'She thanked us for answering the phone... her son came home with somebody else's thread under his skin,' Ossian heard the call, 'give her the clinic money.'

The Unmasked paid Doran's first examination from the surveillance reserve, taking the account from twenty thousand one hundred to nineteen thousand eight hundred.

Paloma recorded the payment as emergency witness care, not charity, before Ossian could turn it into something Doran owed.

Maelle spent the afternoon testing the advertisement dust beside the nine counterfeit fragments listed for auction on the eleventh.

Every false fragment carried a resonance designed to satisfy the standard cradle used by private auction houses.

"We cannot win by saying counterfeit," Maelle kept her hammer near the samples, "Their machine will call every one of these genuine."

'A test built to certify the lie... hit the product where money notices,' Ossian looked at the catalogue, 'make buyers watch it fail.'

Paloma reached the same answer through invoices rather than material science, opening the auction terms beside the house guarantee.

The house promised authenticated provenance, full refund, plus seller disclosure if any lot failed after purchase.

Seller disclosure reached every client who had bought from the same account during the previous twelve months.

Veil Court used separate seller numbers across the catalogue, though every deposit came from one medical procurement company.

Paloma traced that company to Solenne's former Directorate grant office, closed after its patient programme lost public funding.

'A clinic grant becomes a mask seller without changing the bank account... hell, nobody even washed the paperwork,' Ossian copied the number, 'bring that connection inside.'

Maelle added her stolen-paper filing beside the procurement record, giving the house another reason to freeze payment before destroying evidence.

The auction opened its doors to anonymous buyers on the eleventh morning after The Unmasked received its licence.

"We do not rebut Ruan," she turned the catalogue toward Calista, "We make the room holding Veil Court's money demand its own answer."

An accusation could be ignored, while anonymous buyers who had spent eighty thousand on false material would hire investigators before leaving their chairs.

Calista mapped the auction building from municipal records: one public stair, one service lift, plus a sealed emergency door.

'One proper exit for a room where nobody uses a name... and every person inside paid for silence,' Ossian counted the route, 'bad place for panic.'

Entry required two bidder credentials, a refundable deposit, plus a client reference from somebody the auction house already trusted.

Paloma kept a dormant acquisition company from her second year in practice, having paid twelve credits annually to preserve its registration.

Two credentials cost eleven hundred each, reducing the account to seventeen thousand six hundred before anybody placed a bid.

Maelle could not enter under her own name, since the house barred every person struck from a professional registry.

"I go as equipment carrier," she closed the hammer inside a plain case, "Door staff inspect bidders, never the person holding their property."

'A blacklisted engineer entering as furniture... hell, this city keeps making porter work useful,' Ossian checked the case latch, 'let her carry it.'

The catalogue held forty-one lots, nine supplied through Veil Court intermediaries plus one carrying Ivory Banner provenance.

Lot forty-one showed a preserved larval core photographed from three angles, its surface carrying the same pale seam Ossian had pulled from the opening Gate.

The provenance named Ivory Banner recovery, while the attached incident certificate marked the object destroyed three months earlier.

'That core watched the system choose the wrong host... Ruan carried it out while I lay under the hound,' Ossian enlarged the image, 'he kept it.'

Ruan had signed the destruction filing one day after the raid, using a disposal witness field left blank like the second line on Ossian's manifest.

Paloma placed both documents together, creating a contradiction the auction house could understand without believing one word from The Unmasked.

The core carried a reserve of sixty thousand credits, enough money to explain why Ruan wanted noise around the sale.

"He is clearing stolen inventory under a story he bought," Calista kept her eyes on the certificate, "The smear moves attention away from the catalogue."

Ossian put his palm beside lot forty-one, feeling Dreadweight pull toward the old damage inside its preserved shell.

[A rival has placed your stolen birth-meat beneath a price marker]

[Courts that leave their bones in another lair teach thieves where to feed]

'Birth-meat... three months ago that wording would have made me sick,' Ossian read it twice, 'now I only want the core back.'

He said the want aloud before the system could translate it into territory, ownership, or hunger.

"I want lot forty-one," Ossian looked around the table, "The evidence comes with it, but the core comes first."
