Marvel: Reincarnated as Superman
Chapter 88: The Files
Chapter 88: Chapter 88: The Files
"Sun-brand steroids? Seriously?"
Susan couldn’t help laughing to herself. There were already far too many unbelievable things about Daniel for her to keep questioning them all.
"Babe, we’ll talk later. I need to change. I’ve still got somewhere to be."
Without continuing the conversation, Daniel turned around and ran upstairs, bare as the day he was born, toward his walk-in closet.
Originally, he’d planned to wear one of his combat suits. After all, he was about to go beat up some aliens. If you were going to punch extraterrestrials, you had to look cool doing it. This concerned the image of every man on Earth.
Unfortunately, after trying on several suits, he discovered none of them fit anymore. His body had grown an entire size. All the combat suits in his wardrobe were skin-tight designs that used to perfectly highlight his muscular physique.
Now, they were simply too small. Left with no other choice, Daniel reluctantly picked out a stylish Vibranium jacket instead.
"Sigh... I really don’t have enough clothes."
"Looks like I’ll have to visit Wakanda more often."
"I’m sure King T’Chaka misses me."
Daniel muttered to himself. Every time he visited, the old king welcomed him with incredible warmth and hospitality. He must genuinely like having Daniel around.
After all, being strong was a lifelong commitment.
A hero without a suit was just a street thug.
With a trace of regret, Daniel headed for the door. Before leaving, he leaned over and kissed Susan.
"Where are you going?" she asked, no longer in a hurry to leave herself.
"I’ve got something to take care of."
"I’ll have a surprise for you later."
As soon as he finished speaking, he vanished.
Susan and Carol were close friends. When Carol eventually found out that Susan was Daniel’s girlfriend, that reunion was going to be interesting.
...
Daniel went to find Carol. At the moment, she was riding in Fury’s car as the two of them searched for any trace of the Skrulls.
Without warning, Daniel dropped straight out of the sky and landed directly in front of the moving vehicle. Nick slammed on the brakes so hard the tires screeched against the pavement. Once Daniel climbed into the car, Carol immediately glared at him.
"Do you realize how dangerous that was?"
Daniel grinned.
"It’s fine. I wasn’t going to get hurt."
Carol rolled her eyes.
"I’m not worried about you."
"I’m worried you’d wreck somebody else’s car."
"You’re practically indestructible."
"This thing isn’t."
Daniel was momentarily speechless. Then he immediately fired back.
"You owe me money."
"You destroyed my suit."
"I woke up inside the Sun and found out it was gone!"
Carol answered casually without even looking at him.
"I’ll just take you to Wakanda when this is over."
"We’ll get another one."
Sure enough, the siblings had come up with exactly the same solution. After giving Daniel another brief look, Carol blinked in surprise.
"How did you get so big?"
"It’s been only a day, and you’ve gotten an entire size larger."
Daniel immediately protested.
"That’s muscle."
Carol scoffed.
"It’s not like you actually trained for it."
"So what?"
Daniel shrugged.
"You still can’t beat me."
"You lazy bum."
"All you do is lie around in the Sun."
"You still can’t beat me."
Carol’s eye twitched.
"You know, when you were little, I should’ve beaten you more often."
Before Daniel turned six, Carol really had smacked him around more than once. Daniel remained completely unfazed.
"You still can’t beat me."
No matter what she said, that was always his answer. Say whatever you wanted, the fact remained the same, ’She couldn’t beat him.’
Carol nearly exploded.
"You’re a menace."
"Even the inside of the Sun couldn’t cook you."
"You’re impossible."
"Hard headed and impossible."
Watching the siblings’ bicker, Fury silently tightened his grip on the steering wheel. The amount of information he’d just learned was staggering. Were these two really human?
He suddenly found himself desperately wanting to meet Daniel and Carol’s parents. Just what kind of people could raise...
No.
Create...
Two monsters like these?
Seeing Carol repeatedly lose every verbal exchange, Daniel happily shifted his attention to Nick.
"Hey."
"Sorry about what happened yesterday morning."
Through the rearview mirror, Nick saw Daniel smiling brightly. It was friendly, approachable and completely harmless.
It was almost impossible to connect this cheerful young man with the figure from yesterday, the one who had looked like a god descending from heaven.
"It’s alright."
Nick answered with the same calm, friendly tone.
Daniel nodded. He was already used to people treating him kindly.
’I’m probably just too exceptional.’
’Men and women alike are naturally more tolerant of me.’
Daniel shamelessly thought to himself.
’Sigh...’
’Being too outstanding has its downsides.’
’Life doesn’t have enough setbacks and everything goes way too smoothly.’
After chatting casually for a few minutes, the conversation finally returned to business.
"Have you found the Skrulls yet?" Daniel asked.
"And when’s Yon-Rogg getting here?"
"I’m actually pretty interested in meeting him."
Carol shook her head.
"The Skrulls are too cunning. They’ve blended into the population. Right now it’s almost impossible to tell who’s who."
"As for Yon-Rogg, he’ll arrive this afternoon."
"When he does, I’m settling the score."
Now that she’d learned how Yon-Rogg and the Kree had manipulated her for years, every bit of goodwill she’d once had toward him had vanished.
"So where are we headed now?" Daniel asked.
"Nick and I discussed it."
"We think the Skrulls will most likely head to the Lackland Air Force base."
"The Pegasus Project files are stored there."
Carol explained and Daniel just gave a simple smile.
"The base where you used to serve?"
"I’m familiar with that place."
"I’ve got a great relationship with the commanding officers there."
Carol looked at him with obvious disbelief. Daniel immediately defended himself.
"My friends are everywhere and everyone knows I’m incredibly popular."
...
The three of them soon arrived at the Lackland Air Force base. Six years had passed and nearly every face there was unfamiliar.
Nick used his credentials to get them through the front gate. Once inside, Daniel insisted on taking over. Walking up to an officer, he said confidently, "We need access to the Pegasus Project files."
The officer looked the three of them over before replying, "Follow me."
He led them into a room, then quietly left.
Half an hour passed.
Carol crossed her arms.
"I thought you said you were close with the people running this place."
"So why does it feel like we’ve been locked up?"
Daniel didn’t answer. Moments earlier, he’d swept the entire base with his enhanced vision. Everyone had changed, from top to bottom and not even a single familiar face remained.
’Looks like I’ll have to get the files myself.’
Originally, he’d expected a warm welcome. Instead, they’d been detained.
Daniel honestly hadn’t wanted to resort to force, he was a civilized man. He even had two doctoral degrees.
"Come on."
"We’ll get them ourselves."
Daniel stood up. Grabbing the reinforced door, he casually ripped it off its hinges before turning back.
"Follow me."
Then he added confidently, "I really do know this place."
"I’ll take you to the archives."
"Level Five underground."
While Carol and Nick were still looking around for a map, Daniel had already started walking. He led them directly to the archive section containing the Pegasus Project documents. He’d looked through them years ago, so he knew exactly where they were.
Fortunately, the storage location hadn’t changed. Otherwise, that would’ve been embarrassing.
Carol and Nick immediately began searching through the files. Leaning lazily against a shelf, Daniel yawned.
"You won’t find anything useful."
"I’ve already read them. Most of the important parts were redacted."
Carol ignored him and continued flipping through the documents. Eventually, Nick found a notebook containing Dr. Lawson’s handwritten research. Holding it up, he frowned.
"Dr. Lawson must’ve been crazy."
"What is all this?"
"It looks like someone scribbled nonsense across every page."
Carol immediately snatched it from his hands.
"That’s Kree writing."
With the notebook gone, Nick found himself with nothing to do. Out of boredom, he picked up another nearby file.
At first, he was only flipping through it absentmindedly, but after reading a few pages, his expression gradually turned serious and he carefully read every page from beginning to end.
As he did, he couldn’t help glancing over at Daniel, who was leaning against the shelf in a daze.
After Carol finished reading Lawson’s notebook, she called for the others.
"Let’s go."
Without waiting, she turned and walked out. Nick hurried after her so quickly that he didn’t even have time to close the file in his hands before setting it back onto the shelf.
The document remained open. On the very first page was a photograph of Daniel and across the top, printed in bold red letters, was the title.
DANIEL DANVERS.
