Chapter 60: Chapter 60: Information (Part 2) (bonus)

In less than ten minutes, everyone who had participated in the morning’s search and rescue operation had arrived.

The problem was that there had been nearly a hundred people involved.

No matter how large the conference room was, there was no way it could fit that many people.

The slightly overweight base commander immediately developed a headache.

Who had passed along the order?

What kind of idiot had interpreted it this literally?

The key personnel coming would have been enough. Why had they brought the logistics staff too?

After another round of sorting and screening, only eight people remained.

Almost every one of them wore glasses. At a glance, it was obvious they were researchers rather than soldiers.

The remains from the crash site had been examined and processed by these eight individuals.

"Tell us exactly what you found during the cleanup operation."

The base commander had regained some of his composure by now and was once again acting like a proper leader.

The man standing in the middle of the group nodded.

"When we arrived at the scene, it appeared that an explosion had occurred."

The moment Daniel heard the first sentence, his heart skipped a beat.

However, he remained silent and continued listening.

"According to our equipment, an extremely powerful energy reaction occurred at the site."

"The surrounding radiation levels were also unusually high."

"We conducted a thorough search of the area."

"The crash site was littered with aircraft debris."

"However, the most important component, the light speed engine, had completely disappeared."

"Not a single trace of it remained."

The researcher continued speaking in a rigid, academic manner.

Daniel quickly lost patience.

"Skip all that."

He interrupted directly.

"Tell me about the people."

"What happened to the two people on the plane?"

The researcher looked at Daniel in surprise. He had spent the entire day examining wreckage and conducting tests, so he had no idea what had happened outside.

Daniel wasn’t wearing any military uniform or base identification. He looked like an ordinary civilian dressed in casual clothes.

Not only was he somehow sitting in a highly classified meeting, but he was also interrupting and making demands. The researcher was understandably confused.

"Listen to him," the base commander said immediately.

The researcher nodded and continued.

"At the crash site, we only recovered a single body."

"What surprised us was that the remains didn’t match either of the two individuals who were supposed to have been aboard the aircraft."

"The blood was blue."

"The trace elements present in the blood differed from those found in humans."

Daniel blinked.

"Blue blood?"

"Then that wasn’t a human."

"Correct."

The researcher nodded.

"Just before being called here, we were conducting facial reconstruction on the remains."

"The results should be available by now."

Daniel glanced toward the commander. The commander immediately understood.

"Go retrieve the reconstruction results."

Someone hurried out of the room. A few minutes later, they returned carrying a photograph. The researcher took the picture and froze.

"That can’t be right."

"Let me see."

The commander suddenly became interested. Taking the photograph, he studied it carefully for a long time. Then his expression grew serious.

"It’s Dr. Lawson."

The room fell silent. The reconstructed face belonged to Lawson.

Which meant one thing. She wasn’t a human... she was an alien.

An alien had infiltrated the Air Force. Not only that, but she had become the director of a highly classified military project.

Where had she come from?

What was her objective?

Did she have accomplices?

Although the commander had appeared rather cowardly in front of Daniel, he hadn’t reached his position by being incompetent.

His mind immediately began racing. Countless possibilities flashed through his head.

Today alone, he had encountered more unbelievable events than he had during his entire career.

At this point, he only wanted to report everything to his superiors and remove himself from the situation as quickly as possible.

’They’re definitely going to call me in for questioning later.’

’When that happens, I need to request early retirement.’

The commander silently made up his mind.

Daniel, meanwhile, was only briefly surprised. After that, he completely lost interest in Lawson’s identity.

So, what if she was an alien?

What did that have to do with him?

If she caused trouble for him, he’d punch her into a meatball.

Daniel had that much confidence. What mattered now was Carol.

"Did you find anything about Carol?" Daniel asked.

"Yes."

The researcher nodded.

"We found a single strand of hair at the scene."

"DNA analysis confirmed it belonged to Carol Danvers."

"However, that was the only biological evidence we found."

"Other than that, one hair, there was nothing."

"No blood."

"No tissue."

"No remains."

Nothing.

Daniel’s eyes brightened slightly.

"So, Carol is still alive?"

He asked the question again, wanting confirmation.

"Theoretically... yes."

The researcher hesitated.

"But we can’t completely rule out the possibility that the body was entirely destroyed."

The moment Daniel heard that, his mood instantly worsened, his teeth clenched.

For a brief second, he felt like punching someone. The researcher shivered under Daniel’s gaze. Ignoring the impulse, Daniel asked another question.

"Anything else?"

"Yes."

The researcher nodded.

"We discovered traces of combat at the crash site."

"However, the weapons involved don’t match any known Earth technology."

Hearing that, Daniel finally pieced together a rough outline of what had happened.

A group of aliens had likely come to Earth. Most likely they were enemies of Lawson, and they had attacked and destroyed the aircraft.

After the crash, they had killed Lawson. Then they had taken Carol away.

’That’s probably ninety percent of the truth.’

Daniel felt much more relaxed. As long as Carol was alive, everything else could be dealt with later.

Sooner or later, he would find her and when he did, he would bring her home.

Now that he had learned almost everything he needed to know, Daniel decided it was time to leave.

"Alright."

"I’ve heard enough."

"I’m going to collect Carol’s things and head home."

After saying that, Daniel walked over to the base commander. Then he reached out and patted him on the shoulder.

"Thank you."

The commander froze.

Daniel continued.

"Carol’s disappearance wasn’t your fault."

"I came here, wrecked half your base, and scared everyone to death."

"Honestly, I feel a little bad about that."

The commander nearly burst into tears.

At last.

At long last.

The monster... no, this young man was finally being reasonable.

Maintaining a dignified expression, the commander spoke solemnly.

"It is our responsibility to provide answers for the families of personnel involved in accidents."

"We were only doing our duty."

Inside, however, he was practically celebrating. Thank God this had nothing to do with the base.

If Daniel wanted revenge, he could go find those aliens, please just don’t come back here.

The commander desperately hoped Daniel would leave immediately.

Better yet, leave Earth entirely. Go search the universe for your sister... just don’t stay on this planet.

As far as he was concerned, the farther away Daniel was from humanity, the better.

...

Daniel made his way through the base without encountering any obstacles. Soon, he found Maria.

She had almost finished packing Carol’s belongings. Only a single military uniform remained.

Seeing it, Daniel couldn’t help sighing. Carol really had terrible luck.

Of all days, she just happened not to be wearing it today. This wasn’t an ordinary uniform. It was the vibranium combat uniform Daniel had specially arranged for her.

If she had been wearing it during the crash... There was a good chance the situation would have been reversed.

Instead of aliens capturing Carol, Carol might have captured aliens.

"How did it go?"

The moment she saw him, Maria asked.

"Carol’s alive."

Daniel smiled slightly.

"She’ll just be difficult to find for a while."

Maria visibly relaxed.

"As long as she’s alive, that’s enough."

"We can keep searching."

"Sooner or later, we’ll find her."

"Exactly."

Daniel nodded. A few minutes later, Maria packed the remaining items into a suitcase.

"Carol never had many possessions."

She handed the luggage over. Daniel accepted it.

"I’m heading back."

"Are you staying here?"

Maria shrugged.

"I don’t know."

"After everything that’s happened, I’m not sure what I should do next."

"I’ll stay here for a while and think things through."

"Alright."

Daniel nodded.

"If anything happens in the future..."

"If you run into trouble..."

"Come find me."

"You know where I live."

Maria smiled.

"I will."

Carrying the suitcase, Daniel walked towards the exit. Maria accompanied him all the way to the front gate.

"I’m leaving."

Daniel turned back one last time.

"Goodbye."

"Goodbye."

The next moment, Daniel rose into the sky. Within seconds, he disappeared into the distance.

Maria stood outside the base for a long while, staring at the empty horizon. Only after he was completely gone did she finally turn around and return inside.

Elsewhere, the base commander watched Daniel vanish from sight. Then he let out a long breath he had been holding for hours. His shoulders sagged in relief.

"That guy..."

"He’s finally gone."
