Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Generous King

Daniel handed the meteorite to Carol.

While no one was paying attention, he had secretly squeezed and reshaped it with his fingers into the rough outline of an airplane.

Carol accepted it and immediately looked it over with a look of disgust.

It was ugly.

To be fair, Daniel had made it in a hurry. At best, it vaguely resembled a plane. You had to use a considerable amount of imagination to figure out what it was supposed to be.

She shot Daniel an annoyed glance.

Still, she had basically forgiven him.

She hadn’t been that angry in the first place.

What bothered her was that he had disappeared for an entire night without properly explaining where he was going.

That same day, King T’Chaka became even more enthusiastic in his hospitality.

In the morning, he set aside all of his royal duties and personally accompanied Daniel and Carol around Birnin Zana.

In the afternoon, although he couldn’t continue escorting them himself, he assigned T’Challa to accompany them instead.

He even sent along Shuri, who wasn’t even two years old yet.

T’Chaka had noticed that Daniel seemed particularly fond of his daughter.

Now that he was completely committed to increasing Daniel’s goodwill toward Wakanda, there was almost nothing he wouldn’t do.

What he didn’t know was that Daniel’s motives were entirely different.

Daniel knew exactly what kind of genius Shuri would become in the future.

One day, he would need her help building advanced suits.

So naturally, investing early was important.

As he held little Shuri in his arms, Daniel was already making plans.

’When she grows up, I can tell her...’

’Back when you were little, your brother Daniel used to carry you around all the time.’

’Now your poor brother doesn’t even have a suit to wear.’

’As a good sister, shouldn’t you help your brother out a little?’

Daniel was quite pleased with his long term strategy.

By the end of the day, the brother and sister had successfully shown him almost all of Birnin Zana.

The city was actually no smaller than New York.

The only reason they managed to see so much in one day was because they had royal escorts.

Traffic lights didn’t matter.

Crowds moved aside.

Everywhere they went was essentially a VIP route.

There was also the fact that Carol’s physical abilities had improved significantly after her enhancement.

She could walk faster, longer, and with far greater endurance than before.

By the time Daniel and Carol returned to their rooms that evening, both of them were carrying piles of bags.

Wakandan specialty products.

Snacks.

Dried meat.

Various local goods.

The room looked like a souvenir shop had exploded.

Both of them felt extremely satisfied.

Today’s trip had been wonderful.

Most importantly...

They hadn’t spent a single cent.

T’Challa had become noticeably more understanding after hearing about Daniel’s journey through space that morning.

He finally had a vague idea why his father had been treating Daniel so warmly.

Throughout the entire day, Daniel and Carol hadn’t paid for anything.

Not one dollar.

Then again, even if they wanted to pay, they couldn’t.

U.S. dollars were useless in Wakanda.

Whenever Daniel or Carol looked at something for more than a few seconds, T’Challa would immediately buy it.

He never even asked for the price.

His family was rich.

Absurdly rich.

T’Challa could confidently declare.

"I never judge friends by how much money they have."

"Because nobody has more money than my family."

Meanwhile, Daniel and Carol sat on the floor sorting through the mountain of things they had collected.

After a while, Carol suddenly asked, "Daniel, how long have we been away?"

"Probably over ten days."

Daniel thought for a moment before answering.

Silence followed.

They had enjoyed themselves tremendously.

But now...

They both missed Mary and John.

A few moments later, Daniel broke the silence.

"Let’s go home tomorrow."

"We’ve pretty much done everything we wanted to do."

"We can always come back another time."

Carol immediately nodded.

"I agree."

That was exactly what she had wanted to say.

She simply wasn’t sure whether Daniel still had unfinished business in Wakanda.

"Besides," Daniel continued, grinning, "our goal was accomplished."

"You’ve already been enhanced."

"Sure, you’re still a weakling..."

"But now you’re at least a well fed weakling."

"It’s definitely time to head home."

"Tomorrow I’ll say goodbye to the king."

Even while discussing something serious, he still couldn’t resist teasing her.

Combined with that smug grin on his face, Carol nearly exploded.

Weakling?

You’re the weakling!

Ever since Daniel revealed more of his abilities during this trip, he had become increasingly reckless.

He constantly provoked her.

Every.

Single.

Day.

It made Carol’s teeth ache with frustration.

At this point, she reminded herself daily.

’Just wait until I find one of his weaknesses.’

’The day I do...’

’I’m beating him senseless.’

She was furious... absolutely furious.

He was unbearable.

If she hadn’t remembered the last time she punched him and ended up injuring her own hand, she would have smacked him already.

’Stay calm.’

’Stay calm.’

Carol silently repeated the words to herself.

One day.

One day she would get revenge.

For some reason, she had a strong feeling that eventually she would punch Daniel straight into the Sun.

Didn’t he love the Sun?

Fine.

She’d personally send him there.

...

The two chatted for a while longer before heading to bed.

The next morning, Daniel formally informed King T’Chaka that he planned to leave.

"Why not stay a few more days?" the king tried to persuade him.

"There are still many beautiful places around Birnin Zana."

"The customs and traditions of Wakanda’s other tribes are fascinating as well."

"You should really see them."

Daniel smiled and shook his head.

"Maybe next time."

"I’ve been away for quite a while."

"I’m starting to miss home."

"Besides, with my speed, I can reach Wakanda in a matter of seconds whenever I want."

He paused before adding,

"And we’re friends, aren’t we?"

T’Chaka laughed heartily.

"That’s right."

"We are friends."

"Wakanda will always welcome you."

The king was extremely pleased with that answer.

Clearly, the effort he had invested over the past several days had paid off.

Daniel’s impression of Wakanda was excellent.

Now all he needed was for T’Challa to continue building that friendship.

The two would soon attend the same university.

Perhaps he could even arrange for them to become roommates.

Then T’Challa could constantly invite Daniel back to Wakanda.

Visit after visit.

Build enough goodwill.

And someday, if some fool ever dared target Wakanda.

’Open the gates and release Daniel.’

Just imagining it made T’Chaka smile.

The future looked bright.

The king was smiling.

Daniel was smiling too.

For a completely different reason.

’Of course I’ll keep visiting Wakanda.’

’I still need a lot more vibranium.’

"By the way," T’Chaka said, interrupting Daniel’s thoughts.

"T’Challa’s enrollment at MIT has already been arranged."

"He’s only waiting for classes to begin."

"When you return this time, take him with you."

The king looked toward his son.

"He’s never left Wakanda before."

"Keep an eye on him for me."

For a nation like Wakanda, getting someone admitted to MIT was hardly difficult.

"Don’t worry!"

Daniel immediately patted his chest.

"I’ll take great care of him!"

"I’m practically a local around MIT."

He spoke with complete confidence.

For some reason, T’Chaka felt that something about that statement was wrong.

Yet he couldn’t quite identify what it was.

After a moment, he simply let it go.

"Then take one of my aircraft."

"It won’t be as fast as you are, but it’ll be much more comfortable."

Daniel’s eyes immediately lit up.

"Thank you!"

He had absolutely no desire to fly all the way back.

If a luxurious Wakandan aircraft was available, why would he choose to spend hours carrying Carol and getting blasted by wind?

When they arrived, they had brought almost nothing.

Now they were leaving with mountains of luggage.

Plus, one additional passenger.

Flying back wasn’t even realistic anymore.

What was he supposed to do?

Tie ropes around Carol and T’Challa and drag them through the sky like human kites?

Daniel briefly imagined the scene.

’Actually...’

’That sounds kind of fun.’

"One more thing."

T’Chaka interrupted his increasingly dangerous imagination.

He gave two bracelets.

"These are for your parents."

"A small gift from me."

"They’re made from vibranium."

"Combined with Wakandan technology, they provide excellent protection."

Daniel’s eyes immediately widened.

"Oh... there was absolutely no need for this."

His mouth said one thing.

His hands did another.

The bracelets vanished into his grip almost instantly.

"Thank you so much!"

His smile practically glowed.

King T’Chaka was truly a wonderful person.

A genuinely good man.

"Then it’s settled."

The king smiled.

"I’ll inform T’Challa."

"Stay for lunch."

"Leave in the afternoon."

"Allow me to host you one final time."

"That sounds perfect!" Daniel replied immediately.
