Chapter 127: Ravager Encounter
Chapter 127: Chapter 127: Ravager Encounter
"Are you really from Earth?" Quill asked, a look of complete disbelief plastered across his face.
"Ever heard of MIT?" Daniel countered.
Quill nodded. Well, obviously, what American hadn’t heard of it?
Daniel smirked and pulled out two certificates from a nearby drawer.
"Dual PhDs in engineering and physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology!" Daniel said proudly.
The more someone lacked something, the more they tended to flaunt it. Daniel literally carried his doctoral certificates with him everywhere he went, and he had more than one copy!
Knowing that his battles might easily destroy them, he had made dozens of duplicates. It didn’t even matter that some were ruined during his clash with the Kree; he still had five more copies safely tucked away on his spaceship.
"Daniel Danvers?" Quill muttered, picking up the certificates to inspect them before looking back at Daniel.
Daniel lifted his chin high, brimming with arrogance.
"That’s right, that’s me!"
"Wow... impressive!" Quill said.
Daniel was immensely satisfied with Quill’s reaction. His entire body drifted upward, floating casually in mid-air.
He was completely letting his success go to his head!
"Is everyone on Earth like you now?" Quill asked.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, is everyone as fierce, powerful, and incredibly intelligent as you?" Quill asked, enduring a wave of internal nausea. Realizing that this guy couldn’t hide his smugness, Quill figured out that Daniel loved flattery.
"Well, not exactly." Hearing those words, Daniel floated even higher. His eyes gleamed so brightly they nearly burned right through the hull of the ship.
’Young man, you have a bright future ahead of you, because you certainly know how to talk!’
"Naturally, someone as extraordinary as me is a one in a billion existence. After billions of years, Earth finally managed to make me," Daniel chuckled.
"I can tell," Quill nodded against his better judgment.
"By the way, where exactly are we heading?"
Seeing that Daniel looked like he wanted to spend another few minutes self-indulgently praising himself, Quill quickly changed the subject. If this kept going, he was seriously going to throw up. The sheer shamelessness was staggering!
"To Knowhere."
"That’s a pretty distant place!" Quill remarked.
"Yeah," Daniel agreed, nodding. "I’ve been stuck here alone for four days. Bored to death!"
"Being by yourself really is no fun," Quill agreed, nodding along.
....
In a distant star system, aboard a rugged, heavily weathered spaceship.
"That kid escaped again!" a large, red-skinned alien reported to a blue-skinned man who sported a distinctive fin on his head.
"Where is he now?" the blue-skinned man asked. His name was Yondu.
"He’s been on the move. Looks like he’s actually heading right in our direction."
"Walking straight into the net! What are we waiting for then? Go intercept the kid. When I catch him this time, I’m throwing him out into space!"
The red-skinned alien didn’t believe a single word of Yondu’s hollow threats. The kid had run away so many times, and every single time, Yondu found some excuse to let him off the hook! He was already completely used to it.
Boom!
The spaceship shuddered violently.
"What’s going on, Ultron?" Daniel asked.
"Another vessel just attacked us," Ultron reported.
Daniel walked forward to take a look.
"It’s Yondu!" Quill blurted out from behind him, panic lacing his voice. "He’s come to get me."
Quill scratched at his hair frantically. "I went through so much trouble to slip out!" He paced back and forth before finally grabbing Daniel’s arm, pleading, "We need to get out of here right now! Yondu is a ruthless killer, and he constantly talks about eating me!"
"Uh-huh," Daniel said with a shrug. "Running away isn’t my style."
"Stop being stubborn!" Quill said anxiously.
"Okay, I’ll admit it, you’re amazing. You can fly, you’re strong, all of that. But Yondu? You don’t want to mess with him. He’s a Ravager with hundreds of fighters under him, and every one of them knows how to kill.
And his arrow? That thing can go through anything. Maybe you can take a few bullets, but that arrow is a whole different story, so let’s get out of here before it’s too late."
Quill’s voice carried a distinct note of desperate begging.
"You putting it that way only makes me more interested!" Daniel stated. "Ultron, bring us to a halt and dock with them."
"Yes, sir."
"We’re doomed!" Quill buried his face in his hands, slumping onto the couch.
"You’re definitely going to regret this. You’ll get captured and sold off as a slave! With how powerful you are, you’ll definitely fetch a massive price.
I heard there’s a planet owner who absolutely loves slaves with high combat capabilities." Quill tried to use a roundabout way to convince Daniel to change his mind.
"Whether I’ll regret it later? We’ll see, but I can guarantee one thing. My enemies, they always regret coming after me!" Daniel said with absolute confidence, after all, the Kree were probably regretting their choices right about now.
Once the ships completed docking, Yondu led a group of his men as they strode right into Daniel’s vessel.
"Hahaha! Peter, now that’s what I like to see! This old ship may not look like much, but it’s worth plenty, and since you’re making me some money, I’ll let you off the hook this time!" Yondu’s booming laughter rang through the corridor before he stepped into view.
’I knew it!’ the red-skinned alien behind Yondu grumbled internally.
’There’s always some random reason to spare that kid, even though he’s betrayed us so many times!’
He couldn’t help feeling a little bitter. Ever since Yondu brought Quill back from Earth, the rest of the crew felt like they’d been pushed aside.
"Well, look at that. There’s someone else here!" Yondu noted the moment they crossed paths.
Catching sight of Yondu, Quill’s eyes darted away nervously as he kept his head lowered.
"Get over here!" Yondu gestured.
Quill obediently took a step forward, but Daniel reached out and held him back.
"Mind if I borrow him for a few days?" Daniel requested with a smile. "A ship this massive gets pretty lonely when I’m all by myself."
"Hahaha!" Yondu erupted into a laugh, flashing his teeth, before his face instantly turned cold.
"Originally, I was thinking about letting you live, but now I’ve changed my mind. He belongs to me!"
"We can always talk it out, you know," Daniel said, his smile remaining perfectly intact.
Just as Yondu was about to reply, someone behind him tugged firmly on his shoulder.
"What is it?" Yondu tilted his head to listen.
"Boss, we hit the jackpot! The brat actually did us a massive favor this time. Do you know who this guy is?" the subordinate whispered, his voice trembling with sheer excitement.
"Who?"
"We just received the latest wanted list yesterday. This guy is right at the top of the chart! The Kree put a bounty on him, one hundred million!"
"How much?!"
"One hundred million!" The subordinate practically leaped into the air as he spoke.
Yondu froze in place for a brief moment upon hearing the number. Then, he couldn’t help but stare intently at Daniel for several seconds.
"Why are you staring at me? Do we have a deal?" Daniel asked. He was asking purely to play along; the hushed conversation between Yondu and his man couldn’t possibly escape his super hearing.
"I’ve changed my mind again!" Yondu grinned, and this time, the smile was entirely genuine. One hundred million credit! He could buy an entire fleet with that kind of money! Or even purchase a whole planet to retire on!
"You’re coming along with him!" Yondu pointed a finger at Quill.
"And why is that?" Daniel asked.
"Because you’re worth a fortune! Don’t tell me you don’t even know the Kree put a hundred-million bounty on your head?" Yondu chuckled.
"Oh, I know," Daniel nodded. "So, you plan to capture me and hand me over to the Kree?"
"Bingo!" Yondu snapped his fingers. "Don’t bother resisting, and I promise I won’t mistreat you. After all, you’re incredibly valuable right now!"
"And what if I do resist?" Daniel asked.
"Then I’m sorry, but we’ll just have to break your legs and drag you to the Kree inside a cage." Yondu rubbed his hands together. "The Kree didn’t specify whether they wanted you dead or alive anyway, so a broken leg shouldn’t be an issue!"
"Sounds great!" The moment Daniel heard that, a brilliant smile broke across his face.
"Go right ahead and try to break my legs!"
