Anna Linden waited until he left before going inside.

In the morning, Anne Sutton woke up and made breakfast, eating with Nathan Fawcett and Ian.

She said to Nathan Fawcett, "If you’re not going to work, will Ian stay home with you?"

Hearing her, Nathan Fawcett replied, "I’ll take him out for a walk later. I’ve been so busy with work these past few years that I haven’t had much time to spend with him. This is a good chance to take him out."

Anne Sutton said, "That’s a good idea. The weather has been getting nicer these past couple of days, too."

Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne Sutton and said, "Work must be tough."

"..." Anne Sutton smiled. "It’s not tough at all."

After finishing breakfast with them, she left the house.

She was heading to the hospital.

But just as she stepped outside, she saw Caleb Summers standing by the door.

He looked like he had something to say.

Anne Sutton asked, "What are you doing standing here?"

When Caleb Summers saw Anne Sutton, he said, "Nothing."

"If you’re doing nothing, why are you skulking around?"

Caleb Summers asked tentatively, "Where’s Nathan Fawcett?"

"...He’s inside!"

"He hasn’t left?"

"He’s taking a couple of days off."

Caleb Summers said, "Why are you letting him stay here? Why don’t you kick him out? It’s because of you that he doesn’t want to go back to the Linden Family! You’re hurting him, don’t you see?"

Hearing Caleb Summers’s words, Anne Sutton said, "This is his own choice. As long as he’s happy, that’s what matters! It’s not like we’re going to starve."

’Besides, he still has his father’s businesses to fall back on!’

’He was just born lucky.’

He didn’t want to return to the Linden Family, and Anne Sutton didn’t want to force him anymore.

After all, he wasn’t happy there.

And Anna Linden truly didn’t treat him like her own son.

Thinking of Anna Linden’s attitude toward him, Anne Sutton felt it was unfair to him.

Anne Sutton said to Caleb Summers, "Why did you really come here?"

He usually wouldn’t even give them the time of day.

’Now he comes running over. Could it be that he’s had a change of heart and is willing to talk to Nathan Fawcett again?’

Caleb Summers said, "It’s nothing. I’m leaving."

He remembered the harsh words he’d said to Nathan Fawcett and wasn’t willing to back down.

Caleb Summers also hated himself, feeling like he was a disappointment.

Before, when Nathan Fawcett was around, he could just ask him about anything and discuss it with him.

But now, whenever a problem came up, that useless Noah Linden couldn’t handle it at all!

When Nathan Fawcett was in that position, he handled the company’s affairs in a perfectly orderly fashion.

So everyone found their work to be quite easy.

They even thought that if they were in his position, they could be just as brilliant.

The reality, however...

The moment he left, everything changed.

It was only when everyone had to fend for themselves that they realized how great a loss his absence was.

Watching Caleb Summers leave, Anne Sutton found it a bit strange.

In the afternoon, Anne Sutton went to Anna Linden’s office to drop off some documents. She saw Noah Linden there, pestering Anna about Linden Group matters, and Anna looked like she had a splitting headache.

The worst part was that Noah Linden wouldn’t be satisfied until he had run over to ask her about every single little thing.

It was making her extremely frustrated.

Anne Sutton put the things down and was about to leave.

Anna Linden looked at her and said, "I’m having dinner with Faye Yorke’s grandfather tonight. You should come with me."

Anne Sutton nodded. "Okay."

She had met Faye Yorke’s grandfather before.

He was also Anna Linden’s mentor.

Anne Sutton was quite grateful that Anna Linden was willing to take her along.

’Maybe it’s because of my mother, but Anna hasn’t seemed to dislike me as much recently!’

She even kept giving her opportunities to learn.

...

Anne Sutton sent a message to Nathan Fawcett, telling him she would be home late and that he should have dinner with Ian.

He agreed.

Anne Sutton and Anna Linden went to the Yorke residence.

It was Academician Yorke’s birthday, and the Yorke home was quite lively.

Anne Sutton followed Anna Linden inside, and Faye Yorke came over to greet them.

She said, "By the way, Ethan Linden is here today, too."

"Ethan Linden?" Hearing this, Anna Linden frowned. "What’s he doing here?"

’Could it be that he knows he was wrong and came to apologize?’

At this thought, Anna Linden’s mood improved slightly.

Faye Yorke said, "No, my grandfather invited him. The two of them are playing chess over there right now. Want to go take a look?"

Anne Sutton said, "Let’s go have a look."

It was still a while before dinner would be served.

Faye Yorke led Anne Sutton and Anna Linden over, asking as they walked, "I heard Ethan Linden isn’t managing the company anymore?"

At the mention of this, Anna Linden’s expression stiffened. "He isn’t."

"So, does he have other things to do?"

Hearing this, Anne Sutton silently glanced at Anna Linden. From the look on Anna’s face, she didn’t seem to know how to answer either.

How could they explain it? That Nathan Fawcett had been fired from the company by his own mother because they had an argument?

Fortunately, they arrived quickly.

Anne Sutton saw Nathan Fawcett and Mr. Yorke sitting there, playing chess. Ian was beside them, watching intently.

"Grandpa, Dr. Linden is here," Faye Yorke said, making the introduction.

Mr. Yorke glanced at Anna Linden and said, "So you’ve come!"

Anna Linden said, "Hello, Teacher."

She walked over, her gaze falling on Nathan Fawcett. "Who told you to come here?" she asked.

"..." Nathan Fawcett glanced at his mother, then at Anne Sutton. "I’m an idle man now, doing idle things. Is that not allowed either?"

Anna Linden looked at him, about to scold him out of anger, but Mr. Yorke interjected, "Anna, this son of yours is truly impressive. I’m really no match for him in chess."

"Not at all," Nathan Fawcett said. "You’ve just been letting me win!"

"Don’t be so modest!" Mr. Yorke said. "I’ve been playing chess for so many years, you think I can’t tell what your skill level is? Still trying to pretend?"

Nathan Fawcett, sitting to the side, let the corners of his mouth lift into a small smile.

Anna Linden looked at her teacher and Nathan Fawcett. She had no idea when the two of them had started playing chess together.

’And they seem to get along so well?’

When Ian saw Anne Sutton, he said, "Mommy."

He walked over to Anne Sutton.

Mr. Yorke glanced at Anne Sutton. He had met her before; Faye had introduced them.

Seeing Nathan Fawcett sitting across from him, he said, "So you’re unwilling to be with our Faye because of her?"

"Grandpa," Faye said when she heard the old man bring this up. "Bringing this up now is so awkward! My history with Ethan Linden is all in the past, and he’s with someone now."

Mr. Yorke glanced at her. "I just feel it’s a pity for you!"

Faye Yorke said, "What’s there to feel pity about? Ethan Linden is an exceptional man, but doesn’t he already have someone he loves?"

She had been the one to suggest breaking up with Ethan Linden back then because of... that incident.

Faye felt quite sorry toward him.

Now she was afraid her grandfather would cause trouble for him.

Mr. Yorke said, "So foolish."

He glanced at Anne Sutton, feeling a sense of pity for his own granddaughter. But since this was Nathan Fawcett’s decision, there was nothing more he could say.

Nathan Fawcett said, "Thank you for your approval, sir. But in this lifetime, my wife will only ever be Anne Sutton."

"..." Mr. Yorke looked at him and started to laugh. "That you can be so devoted is not a bad thing. It reminds me of myself in my youth! Nathan, you are exceptional."

Hearing Mr. Yorke call him "Nathan," Anna Linden looked at him and said, "Teacher, you know everything?"

(Happy New Year, everyone!)
