Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune
Chapter 352: Breaking with His Mother
On the way back, Anne Sutton sat in the car. Nathan Fawcett held her hand, his large hand gently squeezing her soft fingers.
Anne Sutton let him play with her fingers, paying him no mind.
’He’s just that bored, anyway.’
Still, he drank the toast from Justin Shields today, which meant he was planning to let the Shields Family off the hook.
Seeing her stare out the window, Nathan Fawcett moved closer and wrapped his arm around her. "Is it that interesting outside?"
"It’s alright." Anne Sutton looked at the sky outside the window and said, "When Caleb Summers and I tried to talk you down, you always thought we were trying to harm you. Now, don’t you see how good it is to have power in your hands? If you were a nobody with nothing, do you think you could have been so arrogant today?"
Hearing Anne Sutton’s words, Nathan Fawcett said, "Having power is indeed very good."
Anne Sutton turned her head and glanced at the man. "Then why do you still resent Caleb Summers and me? Taking your anger out on us whenever you feel like it?"
Nathan Fawcett said, "Watching you suck up to me even when you clearly don’t want to... it’s a pretty good feeling, actually."
Hearing his words, Anne Sutton’s mouth twitched. "Fine. Whatever makes you happy."
’Talking to him is going to be the death of me!’
When the two got home, Anne Sutton got out of the car and ignored him.
She walked through the door first.
In the living room, Ian was talking with Anna Linden.
Ian said, "This place is fun."
"Is it fun?"
"So much fun! I’m so happy being with my mom!" When he mentioned Anne Sutton, Ian’s face was full of bliss.
He had grown up without a mother.
He used to mistakenly believe Stella Shields was his mother, but she was never good to him, so he had received almost no motherly love.
Now that he had a mother to dote on him and love him, he was naturally overjoyed.
Anna Linden watched him, a blissful look on his face, and the corners of her mouth lifted slightly, but she said nothing.
Anne Sutton said, "Dr. Linden, what brings you here?"
Sitting on the sofa, Anna Linden looked up at Anne Sutton. "I asked your mother for the address. I came to see Ian. I haven’t seen him in a long time."
Just as she finished speaking, Nathan Fawcett also walked in.
When Anna Linden saw Nathan Fawcett, her tone immediately turned stern. "You’ve been quite something lately!"
’She’s clearly here to stir up trouble!’
Anne Sutton knew that Anna Linden would eventually come asking about the Shields Family affair.
Hearing his mother’s words, Nathan Fawcett said, "Thank you for the compliment, Mother."
Anna Linden demanded, "What did the Shields Family do to you that you had to treat them like this? Even if you’re not marrying Stella Shields, Justin Shields was Ethan Linden’s classmate, and he knew Stella too. By doing this, where does that leave Ethan Linden? Aren’t you afraid people will start to question your identity?"
Hearing his mother’s words, Nathan Fawcett said, "I’ve already handled things with the Shields Family."
"You’ve handled it?" Anna Linden looked at him doubtfully.
Nathan Fawcett said, "Justin Shields came to see me today. I’m no longer targeting the Shields Family."
Anna Linden said, "What do you take people for? Do you think you’re so powerful, acting like this? Have you also handled the repercussions this whole incident has had on the Shields Family?"
Nathan Fawcett said, "What repercussions could there be?"
Anna Linden said, "Do you have any idea how many partnerships they lost because of you?"
"Isn’t that just a matter of me saying the word?"
’Don’t the people below just do whatever I signal them to do anyway?’
"You..." Anna Linden pointed at him, furious. "If Ethan Linden were here, he would never act like you! You’re getting more and more out of control."
A smirk played on Nathan Fawcett’s lips. "Ethan Linden was good at everything, except staying alive. What a shame!"
"Nathan Fawcett!" Anne Sutton stared at him, unable to believe he would speak to his own mother that way.
’He really is...’
She turned to Anna Linden and said, "Dr. Linden, he’s just lost his mind. Please don’t mind him."
Anna Linden stared at Nathan Fawcett and said, "It seems you really have no regard for me lately. Fine. Starting tomorrow, you don’t need to go to the company anymore! I want to see what you amount to without the Linden Family."
Hearing this, Anne Sutton glanced at Nathan Fawcett, then said to Anna Linden, "Dr. Linden, the issue with the Shields Family has already been resolved. Nathan doesn’t know how to talk. Please don’t hold it against him."
Seeing him like this, Anne Sutton was dying of anxiety.
She had hoped he would quickly say something apologetic, but faced with his mother’s punishment, Nathan Fawcett simply said, "Okay."
Seeing his unrepentant attitude, Anna Linden said, "Fine. You’re the one who said it."
With that, she stood up and walked out the door.
Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett, completely baffled. "Are you insane?"
Nathan Fawcett said to Anne Sutton, "Then what was I supposed to do?"
"How could you be like that? You knew your mother was furious, yet you still provoked her."
"I didn’t provoke her," Nathan Fawcett said. "I just had no choice."
"You had no choice? You were clearly doing it on purpose!"
Anyone could see that if he’d just had a better attitude and said a few nice words, Anna Linden wouldn’t have done anything to him.
Nathan Fawcett looked at Anne Sutton. "Isn’t this good? I don’t have to work anymore. From now on, you can support me!"
"How can you even say that?"
"..." Nathan Fawcett looked at her, then sat down on the side, not looking the least bit worried.
Seeing him act so nonchalant, as if he was content to let things fall apart, made Anne Sutton worry herself to death for him.
...
’Then again, this might be good!’
’At this point, just let him be!’
She wanted to see when he would finally suffer enough to understand just how miserable it is to have no money and no power.
When that time came, he would go begging to his mother without her having to say a word.
Because Ian wanted to eat her homemade noodles, Anne Sutton went to the kitchen to make some for him.
Nathan Fawcett sat on the sofa, looking completely at ease.
He actually seemed to be in a pretty good mood about being barred from the company.
Caleb Summers rushed in from outside, having clearly heard the news. He looked at Nathan Fawcett and asked, "Auntie Linden suspended you?"
Nathan Fawcett calmly replied, "Mm."
"Mm?" Seeing his calm expression, Caleb Summers exploded in frustration, "You’ve been suspended and you’re this calm? Ethan—no, I should call you Nathan Fawcett. With you being this calm, are you planning to go scrounge for scraps on the street?"
Anne Sutton, who was in the kitchen, glanced over at Caleb Summers’s anxious face. It was obvious he was extremely worried about this.
It was as if he were the one who had been fired, not Nathan Fawcett.
Nathan Fawcett said, "What’s the use in worrying?"
"Come on, you’re coming with me." Caleb Summers urgently tried to pull him up from the sofa. "I’ll take you to see Auntie Linden. Apologize to her, and she’ll forgive you."
Hearing this, Nathan Fawcett raised a hand to stop him from touching him. "No need. I’m not going."
Caleb Summers stared at him. "Why? Are you really trying to kill me with anger?"
He had thought this whole matter was already over.
He never imagined things would end up like this!
Nathan Fawcett said, "Go mind your own business. You don’t need to worry about me."
"Not worry about you?" Caleb Summers looked at him furiously. "Do you hear yourself? Does that even sound like something a human would say? I’m so worried about you, and you’re making me sound like a lunatic!"
Nathan Fawcett said, "If you’re done talking, you can go."
